Dear students,
All marking is now complete and the final marks for COMP 1000 have been released.
Congratulations to Brian Lam for scoring 98.4 and coming first in the course.
Kindly note, a few of you have received an overall course result of unsatisfactory, even though you have an overall course mark > 50. This is due to an unsatisfactory performance in the final exam. If you have any queries, please email me at a.natarajan@unsw.edu.au
Students who have not attended the final exam that was held on Wednesday, 14th June 2017 due to a genuine reason, or if you believe that your performance was adversely affected due to illness or unavoidable circumstances, then kindly fill in a special consideration request within three business days. Please click on the link below to obtain details about lodging a special consideration request.
https://student.unsw.edu.au/special-consideration
Those who have lodged a special consideration request and have been approved will be eligible to appear for a supplementary exam. The date of this exam will be notified over the next week to approved students.

Consultation location for this afternoon has been shifted to K17, Level 5 501M Meeting Room
Those intending to attend the consultation this afternoon, kindly send me an email. This will give us an idea of the number of students who will be turning up.
Also, reminder - please complete the MyExperience survey, which closes on the 10th of June.
Dear students,
The solution for the practice exam this week has been uploaded to the folder "Final Exam Revision Questions and Solution".
We are also looking at organising some consultations for students over the next two weeks. Kindly email me if you wish to have a consultation with myself or one of the tutors. Kindly note the timing of the first consultation:
The first consultation will be on Monday 3/06/2017 between 1:00 and 2:00. Based on email requests from students we might schedule additional consultations over the next two week period
Dear all,
Next week (Week 13), there will be no lectures. But there will still be labs. During this lab, you will be given a practice exam, which will be similar in style to the final exam. This exam is for practice only and will not be marked. The solution for the practice exam will be released at the end of week 13.
A reminder to all to kindly complete the myExperience survey. A link to this survey was sent out to all students last week. Completion of this survey is vital to our future offerings of the course. The survey does not have a separate section for each tutor. So kindly include any individual feedback under the course overall section.
Under the week 12 lectures, the format of the final exam and web content that will not be tested is outlined. Any content where it is outlined that the content will be provided to you implies a reference sheet for that content will be provided, but you must still be familiar on how to apply them. All content from Excel (as outlined by Weitao) and all content from Access 2010 covered from weeks 8 - 12 is included.
All marks for the mid-term exam should be visible through webcms3 similar to your lab marks.
Please note, lab 7 has been released. This will be due in week 8 (the week following the mid-term break). Those students whose lab falls on Anzac Day, 25 April, kindly attend another lab during this week to have your lab marked off. All labs related to web content will have to be marked off in week 8.
Dear students,
Please find your seating allocation below. Kindly report by 8:30 to Level 3, J17 labs. There will be roll outside each lab, to confirm your seat allocation. Exam commences at 8:45 am, with 10 mins reading, followed by a 55 minute exam that finishes at 9:50 am.

Due to public holidays falling on Friday, 14 April and Tuesday, 25th of April, those students having lab on these days will have to get all labs including this week's lab (i,e. week 7 lab which I shall release shortly and will be due in week 8) have to be marked at an alternative lab time. The tutors have been advised of this.
Dear all,
I've uploaded the slides and answers of demo questions which I show in the class. You might see it tomorrow (there're always delays after we upload the files). Note that the correct answer for Q4 is B. Besides, we'll provide a full list of tags for the html part.
Good Luck!
Weitao
Dear students, I have had several questions regarding lab04. To clarify a few things:
The skeleton file "template.html" contains only the basic HTML structure (tags only) with no content. Hence, if you view the file on a browser, it will display nothing. You are expected to open the template.html in a text editor and copy the contents of the file into your own web page. Then you will be inserting content into this skeleton file, to create a web page similar to the layout given Lab04Layout.pdf.
The first question of lab04 can be implemented using DIV elements or HTML tables. However, the web page has some key requirements in terms of what minimal structure elements are needed and these have been outlined in Lab04.html.
If you are having issues completing lab 04 in week 5, you can progress through the lab during your allocated lab time, and have the lab marked off in week 5. The personal website will be progressively implemented over three weeks (Week 5, Week 6, Week 7) with the final website to be demonstrated to your tutor in week7.
I will also be additionally available for consultation on Thursday over the next three weeks (week 5-7) between 12:15 - 1:15 on Level 4, CSE Building (K17) .
Dear students, this week we will be commencing on the web content of the course, which will run through from weeks 4 to 6.
Dear Students,
As most of you use Excel 2016 to finish assignments, I've repeated the assignments using Excel 2016. I find that some steps are difficult to complete in Excel 2016. Please note the following changes:
In Family Utility Expenses, skip step 1-f,1-i;
In Grade analysis, skip 2-h,2-j,2-k,2-l.
In Capstone exercise, skip Create Another Chart, Format the Bar Chart.
If you're not clear about some operations, you could use google to find answers, there're many useful materials online (e.g., Youtube). Or if you have any further questions, just send me an email.
Regards,
Weitao
Dear students,
The assignments are based on Office 2010, and there're small differences between Excel 2010 and Excel 2016. Some students mentioned that they couldn't find some functions/options. For example, in this week's labs (Task 1-i), you need to click "More buttons" and find style 26. However, the layout tab is missing from 2016 and you couldn't find style 26. To make it easier, I'll finish the assignments using Office 2016 and tell you what operations should be omitted (like Task 1-i). If you find you can't complete some operations in Excel 2016, just skip them and go on with the rest tasks. I'll tell you the operations that should be omitted as soon as possible so that you have enough time to finish the assignments before next week's labs.

Hi everyone,
My email is xuweitao005@gmail.com and my phone number is 0452390622. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about Excels and labs. For the consultation time, sometimes Room 402 is booked by others, so just send me an email or text me before you come, so I can book another room.
Week 2 - Please note the change in time for consultation today.
Weitao will be available for consultation between 1:00 and 2:00 on Level 4, K402 Consultation Room, CSE Building
Please note, students are expected to complete the lab prior to attending the lab. Labs are mainly for resolving any critical issues and for demonstrating and be marked. It is not possible to commence and complete the lab during your allocated lab session. Labs will be released in the previous week around Wednesday/Thursday to give adequate time for students on Monday/Tuesday labs to complete the exercises.
Starting this week, we will offer an hour consultation time (more if needed) to assist students with their labs. I will notify you of the time each week. Today (Wednesday), the consultation time will be between 2:00 - 3:00 pm, on level 4, CSE consultation room.
As some of the students were not aware of this, for weeks 1 and 2, we are being a little flexible, in allowing students to have their lab for week 1 to be marked off in week 2. But, the following weeks labs will have to be demonstrated in the week they are due.
Dear students,
Welcome to the semester 1 offering of COMP 1000. The first set of lectures and labs have been posted. I received an email from some of you that your course is not visible through moodle. It has now been fixed, so the course should appear once you have logged into moodle with your zID and password.
However, you will not require to access moodle apart from viewing the lecture recordings. All materials will be uploaded each week on webcms3.
