Hi all,
Just a reminder that in your lab this week, we will give you 1hr to complete the practice paper uploaded under labs, and in the second hour, we will go through the solution. It is also a good opportunity to clarify anything issues you may have.
Another gentle reminder that MyExperience is open. Please take the time to fill it out - we love to hear about your thoughts on the course - what you liked, what you didn't, and what we could do to better in the future.
Isaac.
Hi all,
It would be greatly appreciated to hear your feedback of COMP1000 for this semester. We are always looking at ways of improving the course - in terms of teaching methods and content.

Dear All,
We will have a one-hour lecture after the mid semester exam on Tuesday 24/4/2017 at 6 pm. Please try to attend the lecture as we want to finalise the topic of database tables which is related to the next lab exercise.
Good luck with your midterm exam.

Hi all,
I have released lab06 a day early and will be due in Week 8. It shouln't take you a long time but JavaScript may be slightly tricky. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Also, the consultation for next week will be Thursday 10-11am in G01 K17.
Isaac.
Hi all,
This week's consultation will be tomorrow from 10-11am in K17 G01.
Isaac.
Hi all,
Lab05 is released. It is due during your week 7 lab time.
Send me an email if you have any problems/concerns.
Hi all,
We are all aware that the Week 4 lecture green-screened. As a result, I went through the same content in Week 5. However, if you feel that is not enough, I have also gone through similar content for another course. This is it:
Isaac.
Hi all,
This week's lecture was successfully recorded and recapped everything we went through last week. Please try and watch it ASAP and email me if you have any questions. Don't forget consultation is tomorrow at 10-11am at G01 in K17.
Isaac.
Hi,
Last notification for the evening (I hope).
The week 5 consultation will be on Wednesday at 10-11am at G01 of the K17 building.
Isaac.
Hi all,
1. Template.html
There is no problem with template.html for lab04. You need to right click on the page and select "view page source" to see the code you need to copy and paste.
2. Safari
It has been brought to my attention that Safari does not come with the "view page source" immediately. Follow these instructions to get it to work: http://www.socialmeteor.com/2013/03/04/how-to-view-html-source-in-safari-web-browser/
3. TextEdit for Mac
There has been some problems that if you write a HTML page in TextEdit on Mac, it will display the code rather than render the web page. If you follow these instructions, you can fix that: https://www.w3schools.com/html/html_editors.asp
Let me know if you have any other concerns.
Hi all,
This week's lecture got recorded as a green screen because apparently the Mac OS doesn't like you recording the screen via HDMI. Next week it will definitely work.
At this stage, I am trying to work out a solution for those of you that missed the lecture. I did film a one-hour version of what I went through for another course which definitely worked, so I'm trying to get access to that.
For the moment, I have the lecture slides and examples uploaded. I understand this is frustrating because you have no experience with HTML/CSS. I am trying to get something happening. I will come get something up.
Dear All,
Since for your Mid-term and final exams you need to work with the windows version of MS Office, we strongly suggest you to do the exercises using the windows version of Excel and Access as the software layout is a bit different in the Mac version. For example in this week exercise drawing pivot chart is different in the mac version in comparison with the windows version of Excel.
Good luck.
Hi all,
I have released lab04. It is your first lab for the web component of the course.
It is worth 20 marks and will be due in your allocated lab time in Week 6 . You are encouraged to attend your week 5 lab and get any help you may need with it.
As Friday, 30th of March is a public holiday, those in my Friday labs are allowed to another lab time during the week.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Isaac.
Hi all,
This week's consultation will be on Monday at 1-2pm in K17 G01 .
Let's enter next year: https://nypost.com/2017/08/07/theres-a-world-championship-for-excel-spreadsheets/
Due during your week 4 lab. Send me an email or post on the forum if you have any concerns. See you Tuesday!
Hi all,
I've uploaded the spreadsheets that I went through in the lecture - both the empty and filled in versions.
Isaac.
Hi all,
Consultation will be at 10-11am on Wednesday at K17 G01.
Isaac.
Hi all,
Some of you have expressed concerns about downloading and using Linux operating system. You do NOT need to download or use Linux in any way, shape or form in this course. When you follow the
<u>Pre-task 1, 2</u> and <u>Task 1</u> of Lab01 only apply if you use the CSE lab computer in the lab. The instructions allow you to log into the COMP1000 environment, which is Windows 10. You do not need to touch Linux.
If you are using your own laptop, you only need to download Office 2016 from the uni. You can save your work however you like on your laptop. The aforementioned instructions are only if you are using the lab computer.<u></u>
Please email me (i.carr@unsw.edu.au) if this doesn't make sense.
Isaac.
Hi All,
Lab02 is now released. It will be due in your Week 3 lab.
A reminder that labs start this week, and you need to have lab01 marked off by the end of your allocated lab time.
Good luck!
Isaac.
Hi all,
Next's week consultation will again be on Wednesday (March 7), in G01 on the ground floor of K17 (CSE Building).
Isaac.
To clarify some questions about the lab work.
You are expected to, at least, start the lab work each week before entering your allocated lab time. If you start the work at the beginning of the lab, you are likely to not finish, and hence lose marks for that week.
You can either (a) start on your own computer (if your laptop has Excel 2016) or (b) the lab computer. You are welcome to welcome to use any CSE lab computer (http://taggi.cse.unsw.edu.au/FAQ/CSE_lab_map/) so long as there isn't another lab going on when in that specific lab at any time. You can save it to your student drive (Z:) and then continue working on it later. You can also do the work on your own laptop. You can also demonstrate your work to tutor on (a) your laptop or (b) the lab computer. If the work is correct and you are using Excel 2016, you will get the marks.
But Isaac, why make us use the lab computers?
You will be doing your mid-semester and final exams on the lab computer. This has two consequences:
1. The lab computer may or may not support a way you're used to doing a specific task, so you need to be familiar Excel version on the lab computer. The differences in versions is minimal for Office 2016 compared to previous versions of Office, however, you still need to be careful.
2. Unlike writing an essay under time, computing exams can be stressful because you might only be missing a single comma, but you might have the complete wrong results, and then as soon as you add that comma, you get everything perfect. Computing exams can be hard to judge time, and hence cause stress. So if you're familiar with using lab computer, it's one less thing you have to worry about before exams.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Hi all,
I believe the Moodle page is now up and running. The lecture recordings should now be available. Please let me know if this is not the case.
Isaac.
PS - sorry for the spam with notices. First week is always a mission from an admin perspective.
Consultation: This is a reminder that there will be a consultation tomorrow at 10-11am at G01 on the ground level of K17 (Computer Science building). Feel free to come by if you have any questions.
Lecture 1 Review:
- Reminder that this is the WebCMS3 (this site) will be the place where everything is stored/shared/accessed.
- Moodle will have the lecture recordings, but is not currently set up. I hope to have this done by the end of the week.
- Labs start next week . Please start lab01 prior to entering the lab. You need to be finished and marked off by your demonstrator in your week 2 lab.
- Lecture notes are now up.
Hi students,
