Hi everyone,
The time is upon us. You can now access the exam by going to the 'Exam Information' page on the course website.
Good luck. Try not to stress yourself too much and just do your best to answer each question.
Rob
Hi everyone,
I've updated the Exam Information page on the course website with details on how you can access and submit the exam tomorrow. I will post another notice tomorrow when the exam starts, but everything you need to start the exam after 10AM tomorrow is on that page.
As we have discussed, the exam will contain some challenging parts, and that may naturally be making some of you a bit worried, but keep in mind that that is not all of the exam. Additionally, for all of the programming questions, there are partial marks available, so try your best for each question, even if you're not able to solve it completely.
Rob
Hi everyone,
I've updated the exam revision questions so that they now include solutions to the given problems. As always, keep in mind that there are many solutions to these sorts of problems, so if you were able to solve them a different way, your solution is not
wrong
. If your still working through the questions, I would encourage you to keep on trying to solve them yourself before looking at the solutions.
I will be posting some more information about the exam tomorrow (where to access the exam, how to submit it, etc.).
Rob
Hi everyone,
I've posted some exam revision questions on the course website. You can find them on the menu on the left hand side. The questions focus mostly on general problem solving with programming as that is typically where practice, rather than memorisation, is needed.
Links to the Kahoots have also been added to the tutorials. They can also be useful for revision.
Rob
Hi everyone,
If you're in today's lab, you'll need to use this zoom meeting link:
https://unsw.zoom.us/j/84082705454
Unfortunately, Michelle is unavailable today so I will be running the lab, but owing to the limitations of zoom, we need have a different meeting for me to be able to create breakout rooms, etc.
Rob
Hi everyone,
As discussed in the lecture today, we will be having a project help session on Thursday from 12-2PM.
If you're planning on attending, please make sure you have your questions ready and everything set up if you need to share your screen.
Rob
Hi everyone,
As discussed in the lectures last week, tomorrow's lecture will focus on revision and the exam. As it is the final week of term, now is the best chance close any gaps you may have in your understanding of the course content. I will of course be answering questions asked during the lecture, but if you're not able to watch the lecture live, please email them to me. In the event we don't have enough time to answer all questions tomorrow, we will continue with them on Wednesday.
Rob
Hi everyone,
Just a quick note about the lab this week. As I've talked about in lectures, for the remaining weeks of term, the labs will be smaller so that they're not distracting you from your project. For this week's lab, there are two marked components. One of them needs to get marked off this week, but it is simply showing progress on your project. There are no particular milestones that you have to reach, or any specific criteria. You just need to show you're making progress toward your final prototype. The second marked component doesn't need to be completed till week 9.
The structure of the week 9 lab will be similar.
Rob
Hi everyone,
Been getting a few questions about submitting the project proposal. To make a submission, if you go to the 'Project' page there is a 'Make Submission' tab which you can use to submit your 'proposal.ipynb' file.
Importantly, please make sure the file you are submitting is the correct file with all your additions. If you downloaded the file from Colaboratory, ensure that it is the downloaded file you submit. If you instead modified the file inside the cs1010-master folder, you should submit that. You should open the file you intend to submit in Visual Studio Code to make sure all your work in there.
Rob
Hi everyone,
As project proposals are due at the end of this week, in the tutorial on Tuesday you will be getting feedback from both your classmates and your tutor on your idea and MVP. Additionally, as we don't have a lab exercise this week, the lab would be a good time to get any help with your demonstration of feasibility. I expect many of you are still working on your proposals, but it would be a good idea to have a description of your MVP by the tutorial and some idea how you may demonstrate feasibility by the lab.
There are a few students who have not gotten their ideas approved by their tutors yet. If that is you, please try to do so as soon as possible. In general, we are approving most ideas, but it's a chance to get initial feedback before you go to the effort of writing the full proposal.
Lastly, we will be analysing the results of Trump or Bot on Tuesday, so today and tomorrow are your last chance to ensure you will be included in our dataset. You can access the application here .
Rob
Hi everyone,
The in-person class is going ahead at 1PM on Wednesday in Room M11 in the Chemical Sciences building.
If you plan on attending, please complete
this campus safety form
ASAP if you've not already done so. It's a requirement for returning to campus.
Rob
Hi everyone,
As discussed in the lectures, here is the midterm survey:
CLICK HERE TO COMPLETE THE SURVEY
IMPORTANT
: If you are intending to attend the in-person revision session next week, please answer yes to the first survey question ASAP. I need to know who exactly who will be attending so it can occur in a safe manner following all guidelines.
The revision session will be at 1PM on Wednesday 21st October in Room M11 in the Chemical Sciences building.
If you are not able to attend in-person, it will be recorded for later viewing. Unfortunately, it cannot be live streamed.
At the moment, the plan is to go through solving any lab exercises that are requested (both normal and challenge questions for weeks 1-4), as well as answer any general questions people may have. If you are not able to attend, but want me to go through a specific lab question, send me an email, so I can make sure I cover the question on the day.
Lastly, the new and improved Trump or Botâ„¢ from today's lecture is now available to play here . Have a go at it for a few rounds so we have lots of data to analyse after the quiet week.
Rob
Hi everyone,
This notice is just to let you know that I've put up a guide (including videos) for setting up Python and Visual Studio Code on your own computer. You can find it under 'Installing Python' on the course website. This is not something you need to do immediately, as you can still use Colaboratory for the week 4 lab. However, for the week 5 lab, you will need to have Python and a suitable editor installed. At some point this coming week, you should install the necessary software and make sure it works.
Hopefully, the guide and the associated videos are all you need for setting things up, but as everyone's computer is different, there may be unexpected problems. During the labs, your lab demonstrators may be able to help you resolve these problems.
Rob
Hi everyone,
This notice is just to let you know that a draft spec for the project has been released. It's available on the left-hand menu of the course website. It will be finalised in the next few days, but shouldn't change substantially from its current form. Based on questions we receive, we will most likely just add further clarifications. I will talk about the project in the lecture tomorrow, and there will also be opportunities to ask questions about it during your tutorial on Tuesday.
As was discussed in the lecture last week, if you don't have a partner already, but want one, you should let your tutor know so they can help find you one . I recommend doing this sooner rather than later. Even though the proposal isn't due until week 7, you should make sure you have enough time to discuss any potential project ideas with your partner.
Rob
Hi everyone,
Just a quick message to let you know how to access the lecture recordings. If you click on 'Lectures, tutes and labs' on the left hand side of the course website you will find an entry for both the Tuesday and Wednesday lectures in each week. If you click on one of them you will find a link to the zoom recording. The recordings will usually be available about an hour after each lecture.
Rob
Hi everyone,
Welcome again to COMP1010! Since my last notice we've had quite a few new enrollments, so if you've not already filled out the survey from last week, please do so soon:

The second thing I need to say is that, for the first 2 or 3 weeks of the course, we'll be using Colaboratory as a teaching tool. It's a service provided by Google, so it does require a Google account to use. I imagine many of you will have Google accounts, but if you don't, or you'd rather not use your personal Google account for course work, you'll need to create one. It is free to do so, and you can use one of the email addresses UNSW provides you. I've placed further instructions in this Colaboratory notebook .
Setting up your account is not something you need to do immediately, but you may wish to do it before the lecture on Tuesday and should try to do it before your first lab. If you run into a problem you can't resolve, don't worry. There will be the opportunity to ask questions during the first lecture, and you can get one-on-one help in your lab too.
If you are living somewhere where certain websites are restricted, it may be the case that you have issues accessing Colaboratory. I have been informed that Colaboratory is accessible from mainland China, but I cannot confirm that nor am I confident that all its features work. If that is the case for you, I have provided an alternative way to access the notebook from above. If you are unable to use Colaboratory and have to use this alternative, please email me at robertce@cse.unsw.edu.au . That's so that I know to keep on providing links to it and instructions for it.
I'll see you on Tuesday!
Rob
Hi everyone,
Welcome to COMP1010! I'm Rob, the lecturer for this course. This email is just to introduce myself and ask you to fill out a brief survey.
As this is the first time this course has ever been offered, I'd like to try and understand what you're hoping to get out of it, as well as a few other pieces of information. This course is not a pre-requisite for any other courses, nor is it core for any degree. As such, we are afforded some flexibility and can adjust content to suite your interests. Similarly, I'd like to find out what level of interest there is in having occasional (optional) in-person classes.

I look forward to meeting you all (via zoom, unfortunately) at the first lecture.
