  • Tomorrow's lecture: 9am-12pm

Posted by Sim Mautner Wednesday 16 November 2022, 05:17:07 PM.

Tomorrow morning our lecture will start an hour early. This decision was made because sufficient content came up in our Tuesday lecture that we (the people in attendance on Tuesday) decided we would like more time on Thursday.

(The lecture will be recorded as usual.)

  • Week 9 Tuesday lecture - 10:30am start

Posted by Sim Mautner Tuesday 08 November 2022, 08:54:46 AM.

    Hi everyone,

Today's lecture will start at 10:30 today.

    Cheers,

    Sim.

  • Week 8 Tuesday lecture - cancelled

Posted by Sim Mautner Tuesday 01 November 2022, 06:37:13 AM.

    Hi everyone,

Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances I won't be available to deliver a lecture this morning. I expect you have enough lecture material from last week (I released extra recordings in addition to the usual content) to keep you busy.

    I'll see you on Thursday.

    Sim.

  • No Thursday Lecture

Posted by Sim Mautner Wednesday 19 October 2022, 04:19:51 PM.

    Hi everyone,

Tomorrow morning there will be no lecture. If students contact me via e-mail me before 10pm tonight to schedule a time then I will be available to do consultations tomorrow between 10am and 12pm. If I don't hear from anyone then I will not be available tomorrow, and I will see you all again on Tuesday morning.

    Cheers,

    Sim.

  • Setting up your project

Posted by Sim Mautner Sunday 16 October 2022, 11:51:58 AM.

In preparation for week 7 and 8, please complete steps 1-4 of the Set up Git for your project (1 mark) task asap. This will enable us to set up your project before the start of week 7. (More information about why this is useful and important, in week 7.)

  • Week 6 - Flex Week Announcements

Posted by Sim Mautner Sunday 16 October 2022, 11:36:53 AM.

    Hi everyone,

I will be running a lecture definitely on Tuesday, and Thursday is TBC. I am not allowed to introduce any new material during those lectures, but will gladly revise concepts and do extra practice on things we have already covered.

If you want me to run a lecture on Thursday, please show up for the Tuesday lecture (that keeps me engaged, motivated, and knowing that you'll have more questions for me).

    Cheers,

    Sim.

  • Week 5 Announcements

Posted by Sim Mautner Thursday 13 October 2022, 09:48:34 AM.

    • We have the option of using our usual lecture time in week 6 to do some revision. I won't do it unless students will find it useful. Please fill out the poll here if you would like me to be available and indicate how you would like me to use that time.
    • I've released the recording from a previous term's lecture on topic 3.5 Python Modules and Libraries. It's on the lecture page. Please watch it in your own time. It includes how to handle things such as:
      • Dates and times (useful for any application which needs the date including storing games high scores or a hotel booking system)
      • Random numbers (useful for any games which require randomness, such as rolling a dice or encountering monsters)
      • Editing images (useful if you'd like to make a meme generator app)
      • Plotting data and making graphs
    • Please get your topic checked with your tutor this week.

(I haven't processed the preference requests at this point, but they should show up on that page by 10am today.)

  • Rescheduled class location

Posted by Sim Mautner Tuesday 20 September 2022, 06:32:37 PM.

Ellie's Thursday 2pm-5pm tutorial will be held this week on Wednesday (tomorrow!!) at 12pm-3pm in Old Main Building room 151.

  • Rescheduling of Thursday 2pm-5pm class

Posted by Sim Mautner Monday 19 September 2022, 05:41:33 PM.

    Hi everyone,

For those of you who are rostered into Ellie's tute-lab class on Thursday 2pm-5pm, remember that Thursday is a public holiday.

Your tute-lab has been rescheduled for Wednesday 12pm-3pm for this week only. We are in the process of trying to secure a classroom. We will post another update tomorrow evening containing the location of your class whether it is a physical classroom on campus, or a Zoom link to have your class online this week.

If you are unable to attend your tute-lab this week due to the time being rescheduled, you may attend another tute-lab for this week. Please let me know (comment on this notice) which class you intend to attend so that we can allocate extra tutors to mark labs if needed.

Any questions, please let me know.

    Cheers,

    Sim.

Due to the public holiday next Thursday I've rescheduled the lecture.

The lecture will be held on Monday 19th September 2pm-4pm. This also means that Tuesday's lecture will be the second lecture of the week (so even if you can't attend Monday's lecture, please try and watch the recording before Tuesday's lecture begins.)

    Cheers,

    Sim.

  • Welcome to COMP1010

Posted by Sim Mautner Monday 12 September 2022, 09:56:12 AM, last modified Tuesday 13 September 2022, 10:07:22 AM.

    Hi everyone,

Welcome to COMP1010, The Art of Computing for term 3 2022! First of all, I'm posting this notice to introduce myself. I'm Sim, the lecturer for the course. I enjoy lecturing and computer programming. Your feedback helps me do my job well, so please don't feel shy to speak up about anything that's going well in the course, or things which could be done better.

Also, I apologise for my delay getting the website up and running for this term and making information available to you. By the end of today I expect to be up to date and you'll have access to things in a more timely manner in the future.

    Course Website

If you're reading this in an email, you can access the course website by clicking here . You may wish to bookmark it. So far there are some interesting things there, such as:

    • Course Outline (including policies, assessment information, and some resources you might find useful throughout the course)
    • Timetable - the time and days of the lectures and tutorials

By the end of today (Monday), you will be able to access more content such as:

    • Online Classes - the links to attend lectures and tutorials
    • Course Work - lecture material for week 1 and tutorial and lab work for weeks 1 and 2

If you can't access the lecture, tutorial or lab material, please contact me via cs1010@cse.unsw.edu.au. Include your name and zid in your e-mail.

    First Lecture

Our first lecture is tomorrow (Tuesday) at 10am. You can join it (and all other lectures) via this link: Lecture Zoom Link (bookmark it!)

    Other Action Items

    • Join the course forum via this link . This is where you can ask questions (publicly or privately) about the course.
    • Fill out the start of term survey to share some information about yourselves.
    • Save the date for project demonstrations. This will be on November 18th (Friday of week 10) . Each student will be required to attend for 1 hour of the day, so I recommend keeping at least a couple hours free at this point. (Accomodations can be made for students who have previous commitments such as work. Please contact me as early as possible if this is your situation.)

    Any Questions?

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. For now, if you reply to this welcome notice on the course website, I'll see it, and in the first lecture you'll learn more about the best way(s) to contact me.

    Regards,

    Sim.
