Posted by Sim Mautner Thursday 21 March 2024, 03:03:52 PM, last modified Thursday 21 March 2024, 03:04:08 PM.

    Hi everyone,

I hope everyone is having a restful and productive flex week.

Tomorrow (Friday 22nd March) I'm available 11:45am-3pm via the Zoom lecture link for any students who want help in the following areas:

    • Stuck on a bug or question which came up from working on their project
    • Have any questions relating to any of the course content so far

If you'd like to see me during this time, please e-mail me (s.mautner@unsw.edu.au) before 9am to request a start time. If multiple students want to see me at the same time, I'll do it based on who requests first, but also try to see everyone who shows up.

I will only be available during the time(s) students request.

If you don't send a request, you can still show up and see if I'm there, but I may not be.

To everyone who I won't see tomorrow, remember that lectures resume on Monday at midday over Zoom (not in person).

    Cheers,

    Sim.

  • COMP1511 Exclusion

Posted by Sim Mautner Wednesday 21 February 2024, 07:00:31 PM.

    Hi everyone,

I'm writing to reiterate what I said in the first lecture - If you're doing a degree run by the School of Computer Science and Engineering, you should not take COMP1010. In particular, if COMP1511 is one of your first year subjects, you should be taking that instead.

This includes students enrolled in COMPA1, COMPBH and SENGAH.

    Regards,

    Sim.

  • Lecture Summary Notes

Posted by Sim Mautner Tuesday 13 February 2024, 10:11:01 PM.

The thread from Monday's lecture containing explanations of key terms taught was a great success. Thank you to everyone who contributed!

Keep building up those pages and you'll end up with a searchable summary of the things you'll likely want to look up!

Also, I'm happy to make these notes available for your reference during the exam.

For anyone who missed it, here's the summary for Monday's lecture .

Now let's start putting together the one for today's lecture !

  • COMP1010 Welcome

Posted by Sim Mautner Sunday 11 February 2024, 01:42:16 PM.

    Hello everyone!

The course website is now up and running and is slowly getting filled in with information for the course (lecture content, assessment tasks, extra resources). It can be found here: COMP1010 Course Homepage . I highly recommend you bookmark this page as you will be using it often this term.

Tomorrow afternoon we have our first lecture. For those of you joining us face-to-face we will meet in Law Theatre G23 located at grid reference K-F8-G23. For those of you joining us online, (assuming no technical difficulties), you can join us in the Zoom Lecture Link . Alternatively, I believe, you can watch the lecture through LiveStream on Echo360.

On Tuesday at midday our lecture will be held at E19 Patricia O'Shane G05 (K-E19-G05) with the same online options as Monday.

Whatever your mode of joining us, I'll see you at 12pm :)

Tomorrow's lecture will cover an introduction to COMP1010 including answers to questions such as:
    • What will we learn in this course?
    • What are Tutorials and Labs? What's the difference?
    • What do I need to do to do well in this course?
    • What assessment tasks will there be?
    • How do I set up my computer in order to write computer programs for this course?
    • How do I ask any questions that I have?

I hope to also write our first computer programs in Python and start learning some course content.

I'm looking forward to meeting you all tomorrow.

    Cheers,

    Sim Mautner
    (Lecturer for COMP1010)
