COMP1010 Results Explained
Posted by
Sim Mautner Wednesday 11 December 2024, 11:33:23 AM.
Hi everyone,
In the coming days you'll be released your COMP1010 grades.
Those of you who received a mark greater than or equal to 50%, with a UF grade, this means that you got an otherwise passing grade, but did not pass the exam. The exam is a hurdle requirement of the course, so this means at this point you have not passed COMP1010. If you are in this category, and would like to attempt to achieve a passing grade in COMP1010, this is how it will work:
-
During the supplementary exam period (6 Jan – 10 Jan 2025), you will be given a task similar to the final exam.
-
If you achieve 50% or more on that task, then your grade will be calculated as follows:
course_mark = (original_course_mark - 50)/2 + 50
If you have any questions, feel free to contact us via a private post on the forum or via e-mail (cs1010@cse.unsw.edu.au).
I hope you all have a wonderful holidays.
Sim.

Exam preparation, and a second practice exam
Posted by
Maddy Guthridge Sunday 01 December 2024, 01:34:57 AM.
Hello, COMP1010!
I hope you've all had a relaxing stuvac, and are now revising and studying for your COMP1010 exam! You've all worked so hard this term, and I'm excited for you to do the final "victory lap".
In this announcement:
-
Exam information
-
A second practice exam
-
Update on course marks
-
Thank you!
📚 Exam information
-
Your exam is in-person on Wednesday afternoon, December the 4th.
-
You should have received an email with information about the exam.
-
Make sure you are not late!
If you are late, we can't let you sit the exam.
-
Remember, you can take in
two double-sided sheets of paper
with any notes you desire.
-
We can't let you take your notes out of the exam once you've finished, so if you want to keep them, make sure to create a copy before the exam.
-
Sim, Ethan and I will all be there during the exam. Say hi!
🍀 A second practice exam, and an exam walk-through
-
I've written a brand new practice exam for you! You can download it using
this link
.
-
Notice the similar structure to the first practice exam -- the overall structure is similar for most exams.
-
Additionally, I've recorded an exam walk-through for this exam. You can watch me solve the entire exam in
this video
.
-
Note that this practice exam is brand new, so there may be minor issues (you'll even spot me discover some during my walk-through)
-
You can download my completed solution using
this link
.
-
If you want even more exam revision material, let us know on the forum. There is one other practice exam I can share, although its structure is much less similar to the final exam, and it is a little too easy compared to your actual exam.
✏️ Update on course marks
-
Unfortunately, we haven't been able to mark your course work as fast as we would have liked.
-
Remember that we are human, and therefore we mark your work at frustratingly human-like speeds 😛.
-
We're doing our absolute best to ensure that everything is marked before your final exam. I've gotten Ethan and Shan to help out with marking the remaining lab work.
-
In particular, I intend to finish marking your week 10 lab work (the first practice exam) tomorrow.
-
However, syncing the marks to Give is a little more challenging, so I may not get that done in time.
-
If you want to know your overall pre-exam mark, ask on the forum, and I'll reply to you as soon as all of your work is marked.
🌻 Thank you!
Thanks so much for taking COMP1010. It's been an absolute pleasure teaching all of you, and we hope you've enjoyed our course! Best of luck studying for your exam, and I'll see you on the day!

Hi everyone,
This coming Monday 7th October is a public holiday. As such there is no lecture on that day. I will hold a catch-up lecture, online only (via the usual Zoom Lecture Link), on Wednesday 9th October 10am-12pm.
Students in Maddy's Monday tutorial and lab should check in with her about scheduling a time to catch up the tutorial and lab work for week 5.
Enjoy your long weekend, and I'll see you next Wednesday, online, for our lecture.
Cheers,

Sim Mautner Friday 06 September 2024, 01:34:19 PM.
Hello everyone!
Welcome to COMP1010 for 24T3 :)
The
course website
is now up and running and is slowly getting filled in with information for the course (lecture content, assessment tasks, extra resources). It can be found here:
COMP1010 Course Homepage
. I highly recommend you bookmark this page as you will be using it often this term.
On Monday at 11am we have our
first lecture
. For those of you joining us face-to-face we will meet in Tyree Energy Technology LG03 (K-H6-LG03). For those of you joining us online, (assuming no technical difficulties), you can join us in the
Zoom Lecture Link
. Alternatively, I believe, you can watch the lecture through LiveStream on Echo360.
On Thursday at 10am our lecture will be held at E19 Patricia O'Shane G05 (K-E19-G05) with the same online options as Monday.
Monday's lecture will cover an introduction to COMP1010 including answers to questions such as:
-
What will we learn in this course?
-
What are Tutorials and Labs? What's the difference?
-
What do I need to do to do well in this course?
-
What assessment tasks will there be?
-
How do I set up my computer in order to write computer programs for this course?
-
How do I ask any questions that I have?
I hope to also write our first computer programs in Python and start learning some course content.
Between now and then, please
join the course forum
using this link:
https://edstem.org/au/join/EeBm8y
. The forum is a place where you can ask questions (both publicly and privately) at any point in the course. I highly recommend you bookmark this page too.
If you're feeling super keen and would like to get your brain warmed up before Monday, I recommend doing the reading and activities in the following links:
I'm looking forward to meeting you all on Monday.
Cheers,
