  • Save the date: practice the exam in-person on April 20th

Posted by Maddy Guthridge about 5 hours from now.

    Hi all!

I'm excited to announce that we'll be running an in-person practice session for the exam on Wednesday the 20th of April (week 11). We'll be running the practice exam from 1-5 PM in the Kora lab on level 3 of the Ainsworth building.

    Why attend?

Your final exam will be run on UNSW computers using an isolated exam environment. We'll use the same environment for the practice exam, so this is an excellent opportunity to practice using the tools we provide. The only thing that will be different on the day will be the specific exam paper and starter code, and so if you attend this practice session, you'll have a solid idea of what to expect for the exam.

    What if I can't attend?

Don't stress. You can attempt any of the practice exams we'll release in the next few weeks on your own computer. I'll also be recording a video tour of the practice exam environment once we've done a bit more setup. You can watch that to know how the exam will be run.

    What about the actual exam?

Specific details will be released soon, once we've finalised all the specifics. We'll publish a dedicated "Exam information" page on WebCMS as soon as we're ready (likely within a week or so). For now, here are the details that are confirmed:

    • The exam will be in-person in the afternoon of Wednesday May 14th.
    • You will not have internet access during the exam, but we will provide snapshots of a number of helpful websites (eg W3Schools).
    • You will be able to bring a small number of paper notes.
    • The structure will be quite similar to lab exercises -- the exam is highly practical, and will involve you building a web app.

I'm really stressed, what can I do?

If you're really worried about the exam or other content, please post on the forum -- we're here to help you and can offer you additional support if needed. In particular, please don't suffer in silence if you're finding the course needlessly difficult. It is literally our job to help you learn, so if you're finding it too challenging, please tell us.

Thanks for reading! I'm excited to see everyone for the practice exam.

  • One more thing about this week

Posted by Sim Mautner 14 days ago.

Just one more thing to add.

On both Wednesday and Thursday, if no one shows up by 11:30, I will assume no one is coming for the rest of the time that day. If you plan to attend but won't arrive by 11:30, please email me saying what time you'll arrive. That way, even if no one else shows up, I'll return at the time you indicate you'll arrive.

  • Optional "Lectures" This Week

Posted by Sim Mautner 14 days ago.

    Hi everyone,

Here are the details for what I'll be making available to you this week.

The plan below is based on the results of the voting in the poll. That being said, what we do will be highly dependant on the preferences of the people who turn up.

Unfortunately I haven't been organised enough to arrange an in-person location, so this means our "lectures" this week will be entirely online in the usual Zoom lecture link .

The structure of Wednesday (tomorrow) and Thursday will be the same.

11am-1pm: I will present you with some questions and, depending on the preferences of the people who show up, allow you time to attempt the question first, or go through a solution immediately.

1pm-2pm: I will provide individual assistance on projects. I've found in the past that this is great when done as a group as everyone learns from the help provided. If you would like help in a slightly more anonymous way, you may e-mail me your project (zip up your folder and e-mail it to s.mautner@unsw.edu.au) along with your question, and I can present it during the time while trying to not identify you as the student.

What if I want individual assistance, but can't attend that time?

You are always allowed to ask to make a consultation time either by e-mailing me or by posting privately on the forum.

I hope your flex week is going well, and I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow. :)

    Cheers,

    Sim.
