Thanks to all of you who have returned your COMP3222 lab kits already.
If you have not yet returned a kit we lent/sent you, please do so by the end of Week 3. The easiest way to drop off the board is to deliver it to the School Office on Level 3 of K17. Please include your name on a sticky note attached to the box or a slip of paper inside the box so that I can mark your return off.
I will begin to ask student admin to block enrolments for students who have not returned their kit by 3 March.
I understand results in COMP3222 have unfortunately been held up for a day or so.
They should be available by early next week at the latest.
My apologies for any inconvenience caused.
Oliver
If you were provided with a lab kit for 3222, please return it to the school office on level 3 of K17 without delay so as to avoid your future enrolment in courses from being blocked. Please attach a note with your name on it to the lab kit box so that your return is marked off.
Thanks!
To overcome poor responsiveness in WebCMS3 with many active concurrent users, please use the Final Exam resources available at:
https://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~cs3222/exam.html
Note:
before the exam, please download any resources (such as lecture slides) you think you may need to access from the course website during the exam.
Please be reminded that the exam is on this Thursday, 1 December, from 9:30am - 1:30pm Sydney time.
Those who would like to attend in person, or make use of a CSE lab machine, should arrive at the Brass (Horn & Bugle) lab on level 3 of J17 by 9:15am. You are permitted to use your own machine if you attend in person, however, the same exam rules apply - in particular, no searching on the Internet or assistance allowed.
WebCMS3 does not cope well with large numbers of concurrent users. On the exam day I will therefore provide you with alternate (direct URL) access to to Moodle for the theory paper as well as to the PDF for the practical paper. I will also provide alternate instructions for submitting the 4 practical parts using give directly rather than through WebCMS3.
Lab11 results have been uploaded for students who submitted on time. The Labs mark provides your total lab score for the course. The lab09bonus score is treated as a bonus mark in the course and will be added to your final mark in the course.
Results for on-time lab09 submissions have been uploaded, as have those for Quiz 4.
A total quiz mark out of 15 (Quizzes) has also been calculated.
Looks like I made a mistake specifying the time today's quiz would be available for. I have fixed the error now and am making the quiz available immediately until 1 pm tomorrow to provide a 24 hour window within which to complete the quiz.
I apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Please complete this poll as soon as you can to let me know whether you are intending to take part in the final exams remotely or in person in a CSE lab. The results will be used to plan resources for the exam, which is scheduled for a 9:30 am start on Thursday, 1 December. To that end, if you change your mind about how you plan to take part, please update your selection using the same poll.
Hello all - the lab07 marks have been released. Also, please be reminded that quiz4 is on this Friday.
The final theory and practical exams for COMP3222/9222 are scheduled to be held on Thursday 1 December from 9:30 am - 1:30 pm Sydney time.
The exams will be run in "hybrid" mode. In our case, that means both in-person and online exams will be held simultaneously.
You will have the option of sitting the exam in a suitably configured CSE lab or to sit an online version of the exam off-site. The advantage of sitting the exam in our lab is that you will have access to a supervisor in the room who can assist with questions, and you will be provided with printed copies of the exam papers. If you are sitting the online exam in an off-site location, access to help may be delayed, you will need to print any materials you would like to have printed yourself, and you will possibly have additional network contention to deal with. While some allowance is provided for these potential delays, this may not be as much as you would like to have.
The exams are open book, and both in-person and online candidates will have access to the Internet. The CSE lab will be configured with the same vmware image available to you in the Lyre lab.
In order to prepare for the exams, I intend asking you to nominate whether you will be taking the exam in-person or online in the near future.
Hi all - your marks for Quiz 3 have been uploaded.
Please keep an eye out for important info on the COMP3222/9222 final exams coming in the next day or two.
Lab 4 has been marked and feedback is available for viewing.
Please be reminded that Quiz 3 is scheduled to be held for 24 hours from 00:01 on Friday (Sydney time). The quiz covers lecture material from Weeks 1 - 5.
The results have been entered - feedback is available for lab 3.
The Week 5 Quiz is scheduled to be available on Moodle from midnight tonight for 24 hours.
lab 4 is due by midnight Monday night.
lab 7 is not due for 18 days, but will rely on your understanding of L06 on Synchronous Sequential Circuit design, which we will discuss in Week 7. Should you wish to make a start on this lab before Week 7, please view the lecture recording.
I have provided a review lecture on Synthesizable VHDL for you to take a look at during Week 6. I hope the slides serve as a succinct review of combinational and synchronous processes.
I also hope you have a rejuvenating break. See you on the 24th at 10am.
Lab 2 has been marked for this students who submitted on time.
Lab 1 and Quiz 1 have been marked. Marks can be viewed by clicking on the bar graph icon at the bottom of the WebCMS3 menu for COMP3222. Feedback on your lab submission can be retrieved via the WebCMS3 submission page for Lab 1. In the first instance, please consult the person who marked your submission if you have questions about your marks.
Please note that submitted labs are usually picked up from 9:00-17:00 the day after they are due. In future I won't generally accept late submissions unless you email me. If you need an extension, please let me know before the due date. Late submissions are penalised 10% per day late and won't be accepted beyond one week after the due date.
Quiz 1 covers lecture material from Weeks 1 & 2 of the course in 22T3.
A Practice Quiz has been opened on Moodle for you to gain some experience at the question style and the amount of time needed to complete Quiz 1. Note that it isn't worth attempting the Practice Quiz until you have completed at least some preparation for the quiz since you will only be given one attempt. at the Practice Quiz as well.
Good luck!
I believe the submission system is operational again. Please submit by 23:59 this evening to avoid the possibility of a late penalty.
We have stale file handles in our system, which will need to be cleared out before submission is possible. I will let you know when submission is possible and make allowance for the delay when we are up and working again.
Apologies for any inconvenience in the meantime.
Thursday's face-to-face labs and lecture in Week 2 are cancelled . Would you please either attend a F2F lab on Tuesday 11-1pm, Wednesday 1-3pm or Wednesday 3-5pm or an online lab on Tuesday 3-5pm or Thursday 6-8pm (which is running) if you would like help with Lab 1.
Please watch the Week 2 lecture on number representations & arithmetic circuits before the 10am lecture on Monday of Week 3. Please prepare for a review of the combinational circuit blocks lecture at 12pm on Thursday of Week 3.
The Week 3 Quiz will be accessible for 24 hours from 00:00-23:59 on Friday of Week 3.
I believe all enrolled students and lab demonstrators will be provided with swipe card access to the Lyre lab on the ground floor of K17 over the next week or so.
To use the Quartus tools in the lab, log into your CSE account, open a terminal emulator from the Applications menu, and issue the command "vm comp3222" at the Unix prompt. (I found allowing the Windows environment to complete setup before maximising the window within which it starts up provides a suitable screen resolution.)
The Windows desktop includes a shortcut to connect to your home drive, where you should store your lab files since the vm is non-persistent. Another alternative is to save your files on an external USB drive. You may find performance to be better if you carry out your work in a local directory (desktop or C:\ drive) before copying the files back to permanent storage.
I'm hopeful we will also have the COMP3222 vm set up in some additional labs so that you can work in those labs when they are available. I'll let you know when this has happened.
Remember to come to one of the F2F labs in Week 1 to collect your lab kit.
I hope you enjoy learning about the fundamentals of digital circuits and using hardware to implement algorithms.
I have a few announcements to help start you off on the course:
