This is a gentle reminder, for those of you who did not yet give their feedback about the course through myExperience, that the due date and time are Thursday 7 June 2018 @ 11:55pm.

Please do provide us with your feedback which is important to us before the deadline.

Final Exam Seating Allocations

Students who have not given any preference have been randomly allocated to a time.

Students in the afternoon exam, can only see their corralling room. They will be told their lab seat when they turn up at the corralling room.

Final Exam Revision Material

I have added the 12s1 Final Exam to the Past Exams page. I will add answers soon. Note that the exam makes use of a "wrapper script" for SQLite called sql and a script to check your queries called check. These scripts are available in /home/cs3311/bin. For the scripts to work, you will need to make a directory for your exam practice and run the following command in that directory:

unzip /home/cs3311/web/18s1/pracs/exam/exam.zip

This will create template files for each question, and will give you a copy of the database. Note that this will be done automatically for you during the exam, as soon as you log in to the exam environment.

Make sure that your practice using sqlite3 and one of the drawing programs xfig or dia before the exam.

Final Exam Time Preference Form

Grieg overload

Grieg can't handle 300+ COMP3311 students all trying to run PostgreSQL servers simultaneously.

Here are some suggestions to avoid a Grieg meltdown tonight:

• shut down your servers when not in use
• change your max_connections setting in /srvr/ YOU /pgsql/postgresql.conf to 4 (and restart the server)
• install a PHP/PostgreSQL stack on your laptop and work there (if I remember correctly, they're both installed on MacOS by default?)
• run your server on a lab workstation *not* on Grieg; this requires
  • run a terminal on the local workstation
  • do not run priv srvr
  • source /srvr/YOU/env
  • pgs start
  • and don't forget to stop the server when you're done

PostgreSQL Servers on Grieg

There are many PostgreSQL servers running on Grieg that are idle and unfairly using resources like semaphores. This is preventing other students from starting their servers. Could you please stop your PostgreSQL server when not in use

PostgreSQL Servers on Grieg

There are currently over 220 PostgreSQL servers running on Grieg, many of which are idle but hogging resources like semaphores. This is preventing other students from starting their servers.

Please stop your PostgreSQL servers when you're not using them.

COMP3311 Final Exam - Wednesday 13 June 2018 - Important Information

The final exam for COMP3311 (Database Systems) will be held on Wednesday 13 June 2018. It is a 3-hour exam.

There will be a morning and an afternoon exam. The times for the exams are:
Morning exam: 9:15am - 12:30pm (includes reading time)
Afternoon exam: 12:20pm - 4:10pm (includes corralling and reading time)
There should not be any communication between students in the morning and afternoon exams.

By Week 13, an online preference form will be available for students to choose either a morning or an afternoon exam subject to availability of seats.
If you have a strong preference for a particular exam time, be quick to nominate it on the online form.
Students with another exam on the same day, will be pre-allocated to the exam time which will not clash.
You can check with the online form that you are pre-allocated correctly.
By Study Week, after the preference form closes, the seating allocations will be released based on your preferences.

Assignment 1 - Q4c - Clarification

There has been some confusion as to what "CSE" refers to in Q4c of Assignment 1 (give the student IDs of all students enrolled in 05s2 in degrees offered by CSE). I just added the following at the end of this question in the spec to make it clear:
In the database, CSE has a longname "School of Computer Science and Engineering" in the OrgUnits table.

It is very important that you start working on your assignment right now since it will take you a while to just understand the database and then start developing the required queries and functions for it.
