A template of the final exam paper is available here . Please answer the two sections on different answer booklets .
Do not forget to check the Review Lecture Notes from Week 13 to find out which content is examinable. There will be no questions on Router Internals (Week 8 Lecture slides 61 - 96). We did not cover this in the lecture.
Make sure you are fully rested and sleep well the night before. Don't skip lunch before the exam. Stay calm and collected. If a question appears to stump you, simply move forward and complete the rest of the exam. Return to it later. The questions are NOT ordered according to the level of difficulty.
Good luck !!
Marks for the second assignment are now available.
The marking guide, test topologies that we used are on the assignment 2 page.
If you have questions about your marks please talk to your tutors.
Dear COMP3331/9331 Students,
Thanks to everyone who have provided feedback about the course. However, the participation rate is very low. Could I please request everyone to provide your feedback via the myExperience survey page via the course Moodle page . Please complete both parts of the survey.
The deadline is 3rd November .
We want to hear what you thought of this course. Your responses are completely confidential and no students are identified. Tell us what you think and give us a grade!
I would greatly appreciate if you could complete the survey ASAP.
A reminder that the final assignment 2 consultation will be held on Wednesday, 26th October, 16:00 - 18:00 in Room 508, Level 5, CSE (K17)
Dear COMP3331/9331 Students,
This semester UNSW is introducing the myExperience course and teaching survey, which will replace the CATEI survey.
We want to hear what you thought of this course. Your responses are completely confidential and no students are identified. Tell us what you think and give us a grade!
Could I please request you to complete the course feedback surveys this week. The deadline is 3rd November. You can access the newly created myExperience survey page via the course Moodle page .
Please complete both parts of the survey.
We would very much appreciate your inputs.
We will have our final lecture on Monday, 24th October during the regular time (4-6pm) in the regular room (Ritchie Theatre). We will wrap up the remaining security content, talk about the final exam and solve some practice problems. I have requested that the lecture be recorded. However, your physical presence would be appreciated. There will be candy and jokes !!
It appears that the screen capture was not recorded during yesterday's (Wed) lecture. Only audio was captured. I am sorry about this but I am not sure what happened as I had double checked that the screen capture was turned on in the room control system. I will try and find out.
You should still be able to listen to the audio and reconcile it with the lecture slides. We started off with a short recap of public-key crypto and then went over lecture slides #39 - #65.
The remaining content in the Security slide set will be covered on our final lecture on Monday, 24th October.
EDIT: After some investigation I have found out that the Echo 360 recording system has issues with HDMI input. Note to self: Always use VGA in lecture theatres.
Additional consultations have been arranged to help students with questions pertaining to the assignment and socket programming. Details are as follows:
There seems to be some confusion about the schedule for the next weeks. Here is the remainder of the schedule:
Monday, 17th October: Lab Exercise 7
Tuesday, 18th October: Lab Exercise 7
Wednesday, 19th October: Tutorial 2 (Lab 7 report due on this day)
Thursday, 20th October: Tutorial 2 (Lab 7 report due on this day)
Monday, 24th October: Tutorial 2 (Lab 7 report due on this day)
Tuesday, 25th October: Tutorial 2 (Lab 7 report due on this day)
NO FURTHER LABS
Lecture notes for Week 12 are now available.
Next week, during your lab time (and in the same room), we have scheduled a tutorial. This will serve as useful practice for the upcoming exam. Please look through the questions beforehand and try to solve them by yourself. You can ask your tutor to prioritise questions which were particularly difficult for you. You are also strongly encouraged to initiate discussions around the underlying concepts.
Note that, the tutorial for Monday and Tuesday labs will take place in Week 13.
The Mech Eng building is closed due to water leakage. All scheduled labs for Tuesday will be postponed to next week.
So the schedule for Tuesday labs will be as follows:
Tuesday, 18th October: Lab Exercise 7
Tuesday 25th October: Tutorial 2
The lab exercise 7 report will be due on Tuesday, 25th October.
The content for next week (lecture notes, lab exercises, sample questions) is now available.
The remedial marking list has been updated for all labs. The list is available here . Students who are on the list MUST attend their scheduled lab this week (& Monday, 10th Oct) to demo their work to their tutors.
Marks for the first assignment are now available, EXCEPT for students in the Wed 15 Kora and Thursday 12 Oboe lab). Your tutor had an emergency and we will endeavour to have your marks ready by Tuesday.
The marking scheme is here .
If you have questions about your marks please talk to your tutors.
We had issues with code submitted by a significant number of students. The issues ranged from code not compiling, tar archive corruption, program not executing as expected, etc. This is rather disappointing despite so many reminders to test your code on CSE Linux machines.
We have arranged a remedial marking session to be held during the scheduled labs next week (Tuesday, 4th October to Monday, 10th October). If your student number is in the list available here , you MUST show up during your next regular lab and demo your work to your tutor. Demos will be handled on a first come first serve. In case of a no show, your assignment will not be marked.
EDIT: If your name is in the list above, you may not see any marks for your assignment as it has not been marked.
Note: The list above does not include names for students in the Wed 15 Kora and Thur 12 Oboe labs. We will update the list for those labs on Tuesday.
Monday, 3rd October is a public holiday. There will no lecture and labs on that day. As such, the Monday labs will be shifted by one week. So the remedial marking for the Monday labs will be held on 10th October, Lab Exercise 7 will be held on 17th October and Tutorial 2 will be held on 24th October. However, note that the lab 6 report is still due on Monday, 3rd October for these students.
The specification for the second assignment is now available. Check the Assignment 2 page linked in the left frame (under Course Work). The (HARD) deadline is 1 1:59pm Friday, 28th October (Week 13) .
Assignment 1 is now behind us. Well done everyone !! You have implemented a stripped down version of TCP. That is a fairly formidable achievement. I hope in the end you found it to be a rewarding experience.
Week 9 lecture and lab content is now available. Note that I am away on Monday. Prof. Mahbub Hassan will deliver the lecture on Monday. The lecture will be on routing protocols. I will be back on Wednesday.
A few announcements related to the assignment
The content for next week (lecture notes, lab exercises) is now available.
It appears that the screen capture did not work during the Wednesday lecture this week (7th Sept). My sincere apologies. I am not sure want went wrong and have asked IT to investigate. Luckily, the audio was recorded correctly. You should be able to reconcile the audio with the Week 7 slides to make sense of it all. We covered Slides 68-107. Let me know if you have any questions.
Additional consultations have been arranged to help students with questions pertaining to the assignment and socket programming. Details are as follows:
The W12 A (Wednesday 12-14) Tuba lab is being relocated to room G07. We will use the Drum lab from this week (Week 7) onwards. The Drum lab is next door to the Tuba lab in the K17 (CSE) basement.
Marks for the mid-session exam are now available. You can access them via WebCMS3 or here . Answers are posted on the mid-session exam page (zpass required). The class average was 10. Detailed statistics are available on the Week 7 lecture notes page and will be discussed in lecture today.
The content for next week (lecture notes, lab exercises) is now available.
If you are enrolled in the Web stream of the course and would like to attend the lectures in person, please feel free to do so. I can see a few empty seats in the lecture theatre and we should be able to accomodate you.
The mid-session exam will be held on 29th August (Monday, Week 6) during regular lecture hours (4-6pm). The seating arrangement is as follows (you MUST go to the correct room):
Ritchie Theatre, Scientia building (regular lecture theatre): COMP3331 (UG students), Last Names: A - L
Old Main Building G31, K15: COMP3331 (UG students), Last Names: M - R
Old Main Building 149, K15: COMP3331 (UG students), Last Names: S - Z
New South Global Theatre (K-G14) Webster Building: COMP9331 (All PG Students)
All students (including WEB stream students) MUST attend the exam.
Further information about the exam, including a sample paper (with solutions) and a template of your exam is available here .
Good luck !!
Here are a few important announcements:
A small but non-trivial number of lab submissions appear to have some issues. Some of the tar files cannot be unarchived or the PDF files are corrupted or graphs are missing, etc. Could I please request all of you to double check the files that you are submitting? If your submissions are corrupted, then your tutors cannot mark them, and so they have to assign you a zero mark. This triggers a frantic email from you to me and several exchanges back and forth between you, me and your tutor to resolve the issues.
A simple sanity check at the time of submission will avoid all of the above !!
All content for Week 4 including lecture slides, sample questions and lab exercises are now available on the webpage.
Start work on the assignment ASAP. A head's up that the mid-session exam will be held in Week 6 on Monday, August 29th during regular lecture hours. Further details will follow.
The specification for the first assignment is now available. Check the Assignment 1 page linked in the left frame (under Course Work). The (HARD) deadline is 11:59pm Friday, 6th September (Week 8).
All content for Week 3 including lecture slides, sample questions and lab exercises are now available on the webpage.
Students are strongly encouraged to discuss solutions to the sample questions on the forum. There has been some activity which is great but we could all benefit from more discussions.
It appears some students are having difficulty accessing the video recordings through Moodle. I have created a Youtube playlist where I will upload the videos. The link to the playlist has been added to the Echo 360 link in the left frame.
The first lab exercise is up on the webpage. Students are strongly urged to read the Tools of the Trade introductory document available on the labs page prior to the lab. All labs are at full capacity so please only attend your scheduled slot.
We strongly encourage that each student pairs up with a "lab buddy". Students should work through the exercises individually but should engage in frequent discussions (or ask questions to) with their buddy. The objective is to leverage peer learning.
Lab reports should be individual submissions and are due the following week before your lab. So if you go to the Monday 18 lab then your report would be due 17:59 on the following Monday.
Have fun !
EDIT:
(1) Students enrolled in both streams (LEC + WEB) are required to attend labs and submit the lab reports.
(2) Labs are full at the moment so please only attend in your scheduled slot.
Welcome to COMP3331/9331.
Please read the course outline carefully before our first lecture on Monday, 25th July 16-18 in Ritchie Theatre (Scientia Building).
Labs will commence in Week 2 (i.e. 1st August onwards).
