To all students taking COMP3331/9331
You should have now received the announcement from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) Academic and the Faculty of Engineering about the move to SY grades for our courses in this term.
In line with the university's decision, I can now confirm that for COMP3331/9331, we will adopt the SY grading for 2020 T1.
This means that you will receive a SY grade if your marks in all four assessment components add up to 50% or more AND you clear the hurdle (scoring 16 out of 40 or 40%) in the final exam. Note that SY is an existing grade notation at UNSW which indicates that Course learning outcomes have been successfully fulfilled.
If your marks in all four assessment components add to less than 50% OR you do not clear the hurdle in the final exam, this course name will simply not appear in your transcript. That is UNSW will not report a FL in your transcript. More details are in the DVC-A's email.
Thanks again for your patience while waiting for this confirmation.
You should consult the student centre regarding the new grading policy if you have any queries.

Dear All,
Hope you are well.
We have organized 3 consultation sessions for 3 different programming languages. Please find the detailed schedule in the assignment section. As you know all the consultations will be held on-line.

Ayda
We now have all the details for your upcoming online mid-term test to be held 3pm-4pm, Wednesday 01 April, Sydney time.
You can access the test links and important information about the test by navigating the Mid-term Exam button on the main menu.
The test comprises of two parts, PART 1 and PART 2. Each part contains 10 multiple choice questions to be completed in 15 minutes. An on-line timer will keep track of your time from the moment you indicate the start of your test and automatically submit your test when the timer expires. You can submit manually before the timer expires.
Both PART 1 and PART 2 will be taken on 01 April (Wednesday). PART 1 will open at 3pm and close at 3:30pm. PART 2 will open at 3:30pm and close at 4pm. All are Sydney times.
A mock test is now open and will close at 2:30pm on 01 April for anyone to get familiarised with the Moodle quiz platform.
Please read the important information about the mid-term test available from the Midterm Exam button and discuss any issues under the Lecture Forum.
I understand that some of you want to know what grading changes will be applied to this course. We are told that the university or the faculty will release a communication to all students regarding this matter soon.
I'll have to wait until this communication before I can decide and announce details for this course. Please understand that this is a matter for the whole university, not random individual decisions from each individual lecturer.
I understand that the uncertainty may be causing some anxiety, but may I ask for your patience during these difficult times.
Mahbub - Your Lecturer
Online midterm test will take place at 3pm Wednesday 01 April (Sydney Time).
More details about the format etc. will be posted in 48 hours as soon as I manage to complete all logistics.
Thanks for your patience and happy preparing for your test. I shall be monitoring the Lecture forum for any questions you may have during your preparation for the mid-term test.
Stay safe. Stay tuned.
Mahbub - Your Lecturer
To all COMP3331/9331 students
By now, you should already know that due to COVID-19, we cannot hold final exam on campus.
We are to find ways to take the exam without having to bring all of you to UNSW.
My plan is to offer you a 24-hour take-home exam after week 10, which works as follows:
Step 1: We release the exam paper on-line at WebCMS at a specified date and time.
Step 2: You download it when you have time and then get 24 hours from the release time to submit your solutions, a PDF file, via the usual GIVE submission system.
That's it. Obviously, it will be open book exam and you can prepare solutions from the comfort of your home.
You are welcome to express your comments here at WebCMS. I shall listen to all comments I can see until tomorrow (Thursday 26 March) 4pm.
Stay safe. Stay tuned.
Mahbub - Your lecturer
I'm still looking for a better on-line quiz platform, faster page loading for students and more administration control for us.
I've now set-up the second mock test. This time in Moodle and is linked from WebCMS, Mid-term Exam menu item.
Again only 3 MCQs and 10 minutes actual time from the moment you decide to attempt, but the actual quiz will be open for 15 minutes to allow for page loading or any initial issues.
Can I ask everyone to take the 2nd mock test? Note that it will be at lecture time (3pm Thursday), so your calendar should be free.
Click on the Mid-term Exam button in the main menu in WebCMS and check whether you can see the Moodle mock test page. . Note that you need to be logged into Moodle before you do this. Discuss any issues under the Lecture forum in WenCMS.
Mahbub - Your Lecturer-in-Charge
157 students took the online mock test today. Thanks everyone for taking part, which shows such on-line tests should work.
There were 3 quiz questions.
Because all of them were directly copied from the lecture slide quizzes, I was expecting all students would get full marks.
I was wrong. Only 9 students got all 3 correct.
There were 34 students who got all of them wrong.
I shall announce the real online Midterm test timing and platform details by the end of this week, but it will be sometime during the lecture times on Wednesday (01 April) next week.
Stay safe. Stay Tuned.
p.s.
Some students said they could not be available for the mock test and requested if the quizzes could be released.
So, here are they with the correct answers:
Q1 A TCP Sender is just about to send a segment of size 100 bytes with sequence number 1234 and ack number 436 in the TCP header. What is the highest sequence number up to and including which this sender has received from the receiver?
(a) 1233 (b) 436 (c) 435 (d)
Correct answer: (c) 435
Q2 A TCP Sender maintains an EstimatedRTT of 100ms. Suppose the next SampleRTT is 108ms. Which of the following is true about the sender?
(a) It will increase EstimatedRTT but leave timeout unchanged
(b) It will increase the timeout
(c) Whether it increases EstimatedRTT will depend on the deviation
(d) Whether it increases the timeout will depend on the deviation
Correct answer: (d) Whether it increases the timeout will depend on the deviation
Q3 Roughly how much time does it take for both the TCP Sender and Receiver to establish connection state since the connect() call?
(a) RTT (b) 1.5 RTT (c) 2RTT (d) 3RTT
Correct answer: (b) 1.5 RTT
Can I ask ALL students to take the 10-min mock mid-term test available from the Activities item from your left-hand menu?
There are only 3 MCQ questions and it will remain open for only 10 minutes for you to complete. This test is not graded.
This is part of testing the platform and give you an opportunity to familiarise yourself with the up-coming on-line Mid-term Test to be held during Week 7 (exact timing yet to be announced).
Thanks for your cooperation.
Mahbub - your Lecturer-in-Charge
You may receive the following notice directly via email, but because the deadline is tomorrow for you to take the survey, I'm posting it here as well:
https://web.cse.unsw.edu.au/~<wbr>apps/prismatic
The topics are essentially
a) what should replace the final exam
b) should we should use pass/fail instead of marks
There is also an open question, for general feedback on the move online and other topics.
The survey closes Sunday (tomorrow) midnight because faculty needs the feedback immediately.
At the request of some students, we have now released the downloadable versions of Week 5 lecture recordings. They are available from the same location (Lectures/Week5) where the streaming versions available. The downloadable versions are obviously large files (exact size is given) to download, but if you face poor Internet connectivity, it may be worth downloading the file first and then watch it locally in your device.
I had to add a .pdf extension for uploading to theBOX (.mp4 extensions cannot be uploaded as a file), but some students told me that Windows Media Player and VLC Player seem to play the video regardless.
Thanks for your patience. Midterm test will now have the following new timing and format:
Timing: Will be held in Week 7 via on-line. Exact timing will be announced soon.
Format: Will still be multiple choice test, but open book this time due to being on-line.
We're exploring suitable platforms for taking the online test and will announce more details here as soon as we figure it out.
For final exam, we are still waiting for the official decision from UNSW central exam authority. Will update you here as soon as it is known.
Stay safe. Stay tuned.
Starting this week (Week 5), lecture recordings will be available directly from the respective week's section under the Lecture button, i.e., click the Lectures button in the left-hand main menu of WebCMS, and then go to Week 5 lecture and click any lecture recordings links there to watch.
I tested it myself just now and found it working.
An updated version of the assignment with detailed guidelines and tips just released.
Click on the Assignment tab in the left-hand menu.
Yesterday we released our plan for moving the course online. The plan is to avoid lectures, labs/tutorials, and mid-term test taking place on-campus.
Effective yesterday, our lab instructors/tutors started taking their tutorials on-line using various tools, such as zoom. To help you cope better with the on-line transition, our tutors will also be available to respond to your emails and any queries on the Lab Forum in WebCMS.
I'm currently exploring a suitable lecture recording platform and will update you on this by tomorrow. I'm also available to respond to your lecture-related queries on the Lecture Forum in WebCMS.
There will be no Mid-term test next week. I'll update you soon about mid-term test, we can confirm that students will not have to be on-campus for any mid-term test.
We will update you regrading final exam as soon as we receive any guidance from the UNSW on this matter.
Stay safe. Stay tuned.

We are currently working on a plan to adjust our teaching practices to reduce the risk of COVID-19 for all students and staff involved in COMP3331/9331. I hope to get the plan approved by the authority by this afternoon and release it here. Please stay tuned and safe.
A preliminary version of the assignment specs has just been released (click the Assignment button in the menu). We now enter the discussions and feedback stage to collect any comments you have. Please read the specs carefully and discuss any feedback you have, such as anything for which you would like more clarifications or more precise specification etc..
We have created a WebCMS forum called Assignment. Please post your queries, discussions, and feedback there.
We will listen to all your comments and feedback and release the final version of the specs next week.
219 students took the poll. Thanks everyone for your input!
58% said the pace is just right.
37% thinks it is too fast.
5% thinks it is too slow.
There is not a lot I can do for those 37% who think I'm going too fast because we only have 36 hours of lectures to cover a large amount of contents. However, to improve the situation, I'm thinking of slowing down a bit on topics that have more numerical contents (calculations involved) and speeding through the ones that are more intuitive and can be picked up by the students on their own later. Hopefully this strategy will serve everyone better in the next 9 weeks of remaining lectures.
Mahbub - Your Lecturer
I'm taking a poll to see what the students think so far about the pace of the lectures, so I can adjust it if necessary. Please submit your poll before 2pm Wednesday (26 Feb)
Welcome to COMP3331/9331.
Today will be our first lecture and I hope to see you, both 3331 and 9331 students, in the lecture theatre at 3pm.
Also, please try to read the Course Outline carefully as soon as you can. It contains valuable information about how we are going to run this course.
See you soon.
Mahbub (Your Lecturer)
Dear All,
