  • Week 8 updates

Posted by Nadeem Ahmed 6 days ago.

    • We will have our second industry guest lecture from TPG Telecom in Week 8, from 4 to 5 p.m. on Monday, April 7th. Here is the summary of the guest lecture.

"Penetration testing is a useful approach for finding vulnerabilities within your system, but how can you find the weaknesses when the system in question is just a design on paper? Threat modelling is a crucial practice for proactively identifying, assessing, and mitigating security vulnerabilities in the designs of systems and processes.

This presentation will provide an overview of what threat modelling is—and clarify what it isn’t—while showcasing its diverse use cases, from application development to operational technology design and construction. We will delve into three widely-used methodologies: PASTA, STRIDE, and Attack Trees, highlighting their strengths, limitations, and ideal applications. Attendees will also gain practical insights through a demonstration of creating a simple visual threat model to pinpoint design weaknesses effectively."

    • We cover RSN and 802.1x-based authentication in our regular lecture (5-6 pm on Monday, April 7th).
    • The lab in Week 8 covers Snort IDS/IPS.
    • A reminder that the 2nd graded Quiz is scheduled for Monday 14th April (Week 9) between 5.30 pm to 6 pm.

Hope you are having a refreshing flexibility week. We have the following updates once classes/labs resume in Week 7:

    • We are excited to announce that TPG Telecom will give an industry guest lecture on "Red/Purple Teaming" on 31 March 2025 between 5 and 6 p.m. The draft lecture slides for the guest lecture are available on WebCMS. Here is the abstract of the talk:

" Red and purple teaming offer valuable insights into the effectiveness of cyber security products and controls. By simulating real-world attacks from nation-state threat actors, organisations can gauge their vulnerability and answer the critical question: 'How easily can we be hacked?'.

In this presentation, a TPG Telecom red team expert will delve into the inner workings of red and purple teams, exploring how they proactively protect against threats. Get ready for gripping 'war stories' about network attacks that echo the very threats discussed in this course – a unique opportunity to learn from real-world experiences. "

    • Labs will resume in Week 7. Lab specifications for Lab 4 on Security analysis using TShark/Wireshark are available under Labs.

  • Week 5
