Thanks for the effort you have all made in preparing final project presentations and demos over the previous two weeks! I have been very impressed to see you all get your projects to the demonstration stage - running on the Kria board. This is a huge jump in capability compared with previous COMP4601 classes. I appreciate the work you have done given the new version of the Vivado/Vitis tools we used and the changes made to the lab assignments. I'm particularly indebted to Chia-Wei, Lesley and Tony (in no particular order) who all went beyond the call of duty in helping in the lab. Overall, along with my colleagues, I'm immensely proud of the technical accomplishments and the professionalism you have demonstrated (so far) in your last core Comp Eng course. Well done!
Hi all - the boards are needed for COMP3601 in Term 3. Please return them as soon as possible and definitely by the end of the exam period.
Please leave the SD cards you were separately given inserted in the card reader on the board. Your return of the card will be checked when you return your board.
Lab 2 submissions have been marked and feedback is available for retrieval.
I have released the seminar presentation and participation scores. These can be obtained here: https://cgi.cse.unsw.edu.au/~give/Student/sturec.php . Seminar presentation scores are based on the average of peer scores received and adjusted to fit a minimum score of 4/10 and a maximum of 10/10 (the range of my assessments). Seminar participation was obtained by a more complicated formula based on the number of assessments provided with deductions for providing skewed scores (i.e. giving mostly if not all 5).
Project plans have been assessed, but the final presentations, demos and reports as well as individual contributions and reflections are yet to be assessed. Together, these components contribute 30% to your final mark in the course.
The Raw Result scores provide a total progressive mark to date out of 70.
Please remember that next Monday's presentations are in EEG03 from 11AM - 1:30PM, and demos will be in Brass from 2:30 - 5:15PM.
Since we have extended the period for project presentations, the Project Reports and Code Repositories, which were due Friday 7 August (Week 10), are now due one week later by 5pm Friday 14 August (Week 11).
Personal Reflections, which were due at 5 pm on Monday 10 August, are now also due one week later by 5pm Monday 17 August (Week 12).
These due dates have been updated on the Project Deliverables page.

Those presentations scheduled for Monday 3/8 (Week 10) have demos scheduled for that afternoon. Presentations scheduled for Wednesday 5/8 (Week 10) and Monday 10/8 (Week 11) have their demos scheduled on the afternoon of 10/8.
Presentations scheduled for Monday 10/8 will be held from 11-1:30PM in EEG03 instead of our usual Monday lecture theatre . Demos in both Weeks 10 & 11 will take p in the Brass lab.

I realise you are all working hard on finishing off Lab 1. However, I thought you may wish to take a look at the spec for Lab 2 when you get a chance. It is due Friday of Week 7.

Since we completed our discussion of DFT today, there won't be a class this Wednesday.
I am aiming to release Lab 2 on DFT this week so that you have the Week 5 & 7 labs to ask for assistance. Lab 2 will be due on Friday 17 July (Week 7).
In other news, we have posted instructions in the Labs section on connecting the board to your laptop via ethernet , which is a workaround if you don't have an ethernet switch or port handy and have WiFi access available.
For those who were wondering: Late penalties for the lab submissions follow the standard UNSW policy: 5% reduction in the maximum mark achievable up to and including 5 days late, with submissions later than 5 days not accepted.
We completed coverage of Ch 3 on data type representations via the CORDIC algorithm on Monday so we won't have a lecture this Wednesday.
Please use this time instead to work with your project partners in preparation for submitting your project's establishment notice by 5pm this Friday.
The Lab 1 specification has now been finalised. I'm hoping you will have sufficient time to discuss any problematic aspects during the Week 3 and Week 4 lab sessions.
The rollout of the updated vm that includes the completed vadd tutorial files is proceeding - by 1:30 today, Bugle15 and Lyre15 were being updated. Horn will take until tomorrow morning.
We are rolling out an updated copy of the vm that will have the vector add application build in Documents/WorkSpace/vaddWS. This will enable you to commence Lab 1 without having completed the vector add tutorial yourself. While the update is taking place - it takes about 40 mins per machine - the vm on the machine currently being updated will not be available for use. The update will be completed before the lab sessions on Monday.
Due to the King's Birthday holiday next Monday, there won't be any classes that day, but that makes it an excellent day to make progress on getting started with lab work . I haven't tested Vitis 2025.2 or the lab exercises with Windows, but that should work OK.
We got through almost all of this week's lecture on Monday, so it seems senseless to hold a lecture this Wednesday, but we will meet for next week's lecture on Wednesday at 2pm in OMB150. It may help you to look at Ch. 2 of PP4FPGAs (the text linked at the top of the Lectures menu) before the lecture.

Whoa! Lectures & labs start in a week, and we have brave new plans for 4601! There, I'm committed. We are moving to Vitis 2025.2 and that means pretty radical changes to the labs and lectures (none of which have been prepared yet). So what you see on the web today is certainly changing before the expected delivery dates for the materials. What is not changing, is our tradition of seminar presentations and team-based design projects, even if how you do them, may change. The gist of the lectures won't be changing too much either.
So sit back and enjoy the last week of your holidays and we'll see you next week!
