Good morning everyoooooone!
Congratulations on your outstanding group report results. I have just released the marks on Moodle. The average mark is 76%, which is fantastic.
I hope that you are all getting some sun today if you are in Sydney : )
Many thanks for everything and speak soon,
Seb (and Flora)
Hi everyone! Okay I am making up a new rule here (living life on the edge). Please make sure that
each member of your group submits a copy of your group's Group Report
.
Thanks!
Seb
Hi everyone! I have just released your presentaiton marks on Moodle. The average presentation mark is ~76%. This is fantastic! Well done all of you.
There are a couple of tutes whose marks have not been entered yet, as some of your tutors are coming down with covid :,( They will be up asap I promise. Please do reach out to your tutors if you would like further feedback on your presentations. Some tutors gave feedback verbally in the tutorials, others in comments on Moodle. Variety is the spice of life, after all.
Again, well done!
All best,
Seb (and Flora)
Goooooood evening everyone : ) Thank you so much for filling out your myExperience surveys! The response rate is looking fantastic. This new(ish) version of 4920 is very much student led, and Flora and I appreciate the time that you are taking from the bottom of our hearts - especially during "assessment season". Seriously, thank you!
Here is a little story. When I was tutoring this course in T1 2022, I knew that I would be running it in T3. So I dedicated the second half of my final tutes to asking my tute groups what _they_ would have liked the course to be. Their feedback was a seriously huge help for Flora and my redesigning things for T3 last year. Then at the end of T3, Flora and I got pages and pages of wonderful feedback from our new cohort in their my Experience surveys. We were really knocked over by all of the patient and nuanced comments. So then we used all of _this_ feedback to refine our rebuild even further...into the version of the course that you are taking just now. For T3 of this year, we are going to use _your_ feedback to refine and improve the course even further. There is no end goal here, just constant polishing and tweaking and improving things. But together is the only way that we can do this. Without you it would be impossible. So, you know, thanks for making the impossible possible : )
Seb and Flora
Hellllllo everyone!
The marks for your second essays are now released on Moodle. Well done everyone! The average mark for the second essay is 73.x%, and this is a really great result. Importantly, it is a wonderful indication of all of the dedication and hard work that you have been doing this term. Good on every single one of you : )
On behalf of Flora and your tutors, congratulations! are very nearly there....
All best,
Seb
Hi everyone!
I super big thank you from Flora and from me for being such a wonderful cohort this term. We have had an absolute blast, and all of your excellent questions and contributions are what made it that way. Good on you.
We know that a lot of you are about to graduate! So, very sincerely, all the very best on your new adventures! We know that you will all go on to do great things.
God speed with your group projects!
Seb and Flora
Hi all,
Our sincere apologies! We uploaded the wrong group assignment spec. This newly revised spec was already done since Feb 2023, but, it was the older version that got uploaded. (purely human error, sorry!!)
Rest assured, it doesn't change the assignment structure and scope, but it helps to clarifies lots of the questions that were raised in the last term. I only realised this mistake after seeing several questions in the forum which I thought should've been covered in the spec.
Please read the new group assignment specification.

Again, our deepest apologies.
Best regards,
Flora & Seb
Hi,
I'm looking forward to seeing many of you tomorrow. I'm going to talk about Values sensitive design, Trustworthy automation, and ethics dilemma around them. I'm also going to provide some briefings on group assignment. Hope to see many of you in person tomorrow.
Flora
Well done everyone!
I hope that your Flex Weeks have been at least slightly relaxed. Flora and I are looking very forward to seeing you all on Monday. With snacks!
All best,
Seb
Good morning and happy Flex Week Monday everyone! I have just released the marks for your First Essay. Well done everyone
: )
Please do reach out to your tutors for all and any further comments and feedback.
All best,
Seb
Hi everyone! Your awesome tutors need another day or so to finalise your marks and go over their feedback. So I shall release your marks and comments this coming Monday.
I am sorry for the delay here but it really is super important that everything is done properly. As I write this your tutors are double and triple checking everything and comparing essays and so on.
Nearly there I promise!
All best,
Seb
Hi everyone!
I have had to adjust my consultation hours for tomorrow - Thursday March 16. They are now:
14:00 - 15:00
This is just for tomorrow - normal hours resume again afterwards!
All best,
Seb
Hi Everyone!
Many thanks to Henry for asking me about this. I know that some of you are worrying about your bibliography causing high turnitin scores, and I am hoping to stop a lot of this worry. Please do read the following : )
I can promise you that absolutely no one will be penalised for their bibliography triggering turnitin. I really mean this! Similarly, people might paste the essay questions in, and this will this will trigger turnitin. So will all and any direct quotes. However, none of this counts as plagiarism. Not any of it. Just so long as it is referenced correctly. So you will not be in any trouble for this.
Cases of suspected plagiarism are evaluated directly, by me, one at a time, very very carefully. I read over the essays in question and only then do I decide whether or not I need to speak to the student. And then I speak with the student before making any decision at all.
The raw "Similarity Percentage" displayed by turnitin is not a problem. What
does
matter is that all and any of your material that is not your own words or your own ides is
referenced
to standard international academic standards. I have linked to UNSW's guidelines and specifications on this in both the essay questions themselves (and in all assignment questions for this course), as well as in the Course Outline here on webcms. As written in all of the essay questions and on the Course Outline, you absolutely must read through and understand these plagiarism specifications. They are the very same specifications that have been used across professional academic practice for generations.
Again - because this is worth re-emphasising - no one will be penalised for plagiarism as a pure function of a raw similarity score in turnitin. This is not the case now, has never been the case in the past, and will never be the case in the future.
For example, you might have an essay that has an 80% correlation, because nearly all of it is direct quotes! Now to be sure, an essay like this is unlikely to get very high marks, indeed in might even fail on account of it being nothing but quotes. However, it would not, I repeat NOT fall afoul of any plagiarism guidelines if all of these quotes were referenced correctly.
So seriously, please do not worry about your bibliography/essay title etc. (or anything else just so long as it if referenced directly) being tagged as a match by turnitin.
What matters is when you use someone else's words or ideas
without
referencing them to proper academic standards. So just make sure that you reference things properly : ) Please make sure the read the UNSW referencing material linked to in the essay questions, and to follow these rules properly, and you will not have to worry about plagiarism at all.
All best,
Seb
Hi everyone!
I hope that you are all enjoying the sun here in Sydney if you are in town : )
This is just a friendly reminder that you First Essay is due this coming Friday. Please see the First Essay Questions under "Assignments" here on webcms for all details, including handy tips on writing a good answer, referencing guidelines, and more. As per the essay question document, submission is via turnitin on Moodle. You should be able to see the submission link now under the 4920 moodle page!
All best,
Seb
Thank for coming everyone, and most of all for your awesome questions!
One more tip - English does not like long sentences. For English, the shorter the sentence the better, nearly every time : )

Hey everyone! Oh my gosh - I have just found out (hi Andrew) that some of you are not reading all three pages of the First Essay questions. There is a lot of information there and you need to read it all! There is elaborate advice for writing a good answer to each of the questions!
The same goes for the Second Essay questions : )
Also there is some vital stuff about ChatGPT as well.
Read the whole document! Please please read the whole document! "\(o_o)/"
