  • Group assignment contribution

Posted by Kristin Smith Friday 05 August 2022, 10:43:41 AM.

    Good morning everyone,

This is a reminder that equal work contribution is expected for the fuzzer assignment. If cases of group members not contributing at all/not contributing their fair share arise, the case will be reviewed and marks adjusted accordingly. Members of the same group may receive different marks if unequal contribution is reported and verified by course staff. Good luck for your final submission.

Posted by Kristin Smith Friday 22 July 2022, 09:46:05 AM.

Hi everyone, the week 8 wargames (wargame 7) due date has been extended by 1 week. You now have until 01/08/22 17:59:59 to submit. Good luck :)

  • Monday week 8 lecture is also online

Posted by Kristin Smith Sunday 17 July 2022, 07:09:47 PM.

    Hi everyone,

Unfortunately Adam is still recovering and unable to teach tomorrow night. The recordings of last years lectures on Heap are available here: part 1 , part 2 . Due to scheduling differences last year this topic was spread across two lectures so there is an extra 20 minutes of content.

Once again, please don't attend in person tomorrow as nobody will be at the lecture theatre.

  • Monday week 7 lecture is online

    Hi everyone,

I hope you all enjoyed quiet week. Unfortunately Adam is sick/isolating and will be unable to deliver tomorrows lecture. The recording of last years lecture on ROP is available here and should be watched instead (ignore the lecture number, the lecture schedule was different last year).

Please don't attend in person tomorrow as nobody will be at the lecture theatre.

  • Midsem exam

Posted by Kristin Smith Saturday 25 June 2022, 05:13:36 PM, last modified Saturday 25 June 2022, 05:14:00 PM.

As discussed in the lecture this week, there will be a midsem exam next Thursday/Friday. Here are the details:

Location: On Moodle . If you can't access Moodle for this course, please email us ASAP at cs6447@cse.unsw.edu.au

Time: The exam is 2 hours long and must be taken during the assessment window. The window is from Thursday 30/06/22 9am to Friday 01/07/22 6pm . You may not discuss the exam with anyone during the assessment window. If you are unable to take the exam during this time, please email us! (Just a reminder that trying to solve the challenges locally or remotely before you start the exam is cheating...). Additionally, if you have provisions with ELS and you have not sent through supporting documents to the class account please do so ASAP.

Topics: There will be 3 flags you must retrieve to get full marks. These will test topics including buffer overflows, format strings and shellcode. ASLR will be enabled for the exam.

If you have questions prior to the exam please attend Mondays lecture in person and talk to Adam afterwards (he will stay for an extra half hour for an exam consultation).

Good luck with your studies, if you are able to complete all the wargames up until this point, you are in good shape for the exam.

  • Course Discussion

Posted by Adam Tanana Friday 03 June 2022, 08:05:38 PM.

Hey All, Hopefully week 1 is going well for everyone.

Quick note, This course has a lot of self learning involved. This is always difficult, especially if you've never done such a hands-on course before. We recommend joining the course discussion which can be found at https://seceduau.slack.com , in the #comp6447 channel, a lot of informal course discussion will occur here, and it is the perfect place to look for help from both course staff as well as other students when you are stuck.

I recommend joining especially if you are stuck on labs, or tute/lecture content, as other students / course staff are usually super happy to help.

Thanks and hope you enjoy the course!

  • Online lab + lab recordings

Posted by Kristin Smith Tuesday 31 May 2022, 07:56:07 PM.

    Hi everyone,

Tutorial W18A (Wednesday 6pm) will now be held online. We understand some students may be unable able to attend in person tutorials due to illness/location so we have moved a session online. You can find the updated timetable with the link to join the class here . Additionally, these labs will be recorded. We will add the recordings under the 'Lab recordings' tab in the class menu as they become available. If you can't attend your enrolled lab for whatever reason it's fine to drop into any other class (including the online one). If you are enrolled in W18A and would prefer an in person class you may re-enrol in another tutorial.

  • Week 1 Lecture

The first lecture this term is Monday 6pm in the Physics Theatre (I hope). Hope to see a lot of you in person, but if you are unable to come to lectures in person, we are going to be streaming & recording the lectures using echo360.

To view the livestream or re-watch old lectures during the team, Just head to Moodle, click on the course and there will be a link to the Echo360 database for this term. This is our first time using this for streaming lectures, so please give us any feedback if there are any issues.

  • Welcome to COMP6447

Posted by Adam Tanana Tuesday 24 May 2022, 05:52:33 PM, last modified Tuesday 24 May 2022, 06:00:45 PM.

    Hey everyone.

Hope you are all super excited to take COMP6447 this term (is that what trimesters are called?). The course outline is now available on WebCMS and has important information about the content and examinations that you should review. If you have any questions please either reach out over email or post on the class forum (WebCMS).

To help you prepare for this course, we've come up with a list of helpful prerequisite knowledge that you should revise (or skim over for the first time) before starting the course. These include:

    • How process memory is laid out
      • pointers
      • endianness
    • Difference between regions of memory (stack, heap, text, data)
    • Virtual memory/page table
    • Difference between kernel vs user space
    • Familiarity with using Linux, and Linux general knowledge
      • Linux file system
      • system calls
      • etc.
    • Familiarity with using gdb and python

If you aren't familiar with some of these topics, that's fine. I recommend reviewing them before starting the course to make your experience smoother.

I also recommend you have access to a Linux machine or VM, with PwnTools , PwnDBG and BinaryNinja installed. These will be required to do many of the challenges in this Course. If you have issues installing anything, that's fine (Lab 1 is about helping you get ready, so no need to panic if you are unsure about anything).

Also, I've setup 4 polls under Activities to better guage everyone's understanding of different topcis. Please take a look when you get a chance.

Enjoy the rest of your holidays/0-week/exam period. Looking forwards to seeing y'all next monday
