In case you're interested in the overall result on the poll for the quizzes in this course:
88% | The quizzes were a good way for me to check on my progress. |
65% | The number and length of the quizzes was fine. |
36% | I would have preferred weekly quizzes. |
7% | I would have preferred fewer quizzes. |
2% | I would have preferred no quizzes at all. |
21% | For the mid-term exam, I would prefer this electronic format as well. |
I thank everyone for the feedback. This is very valuable and will certainly help shape future offerings of this course.
Thanks also to all of you who have already provided feedback through MyExperience. I'm very happy that the rate of response has reached the 65% mark today; but if you have not yet filled in the survey, you can still do so until
Friday
tomorrow (Thursday)
. Please click
here
to access it.
Just a reminder about Quiz 6, which is due tonight, and tomorrow's Revision, where you can discuss any questions you might have about the weekly problem sets or any of your quiz questions.
A friendly reminder that quiz 4 is due tomorrow (Thursday, 3 May) at 23:59 hrs.
Your result in the mid-session test, including detailed feedback on the marks for your answers, is now available from your CSE account using
9020 classrun -collect mst
Alternatively, you can check your marks on WebCMS3. If you wish to further discuss your marks with me, please come to one of my next consultation sessions. You should also come and see me in case your overall score is below 10.
Congratulations to the 14 students who scored a perfect 20/20, well done.
A reminder that quiz 3 is available now and due on Thursday (19 April) at 23:59pm. Since this quiz covers the contents of only one lecture, there are just four questions this time, each of which is worth 1 mark (to ensure that it counts as much as the other quizzes if this is among your 5 best ones).
Some information about the mid-session test on Friday this week (13 April):
Please bring your Photo Student I.D. Card
Location:
Please be there at 1pm for a 1:05pm start.
Format:
Calculators, phones and watches are not allowed and must remain in your bag. Please leave your bags in the area around the lectern and do not take them to your seat.
For complete instructions see: instructions.pdf
Note that we will have a short break after the test followed by a regular lecture.
Just a reminder that there will be no lecture tomorrow (public holiday) nor next week (mid-semester break).
Meanwhile, if you're interested in some extra-curricular homework, have a look at problem set week 5 entitled "Fun with Logic."
Have a good break everyone,
Michael
Your result for quiz 1, including detailed feedback for your answers, is now available on Moodle, where you can click on "Quiz 1" and then "Review".
As mentioned in class today, question 4 was making a common assumption that, however, should have been spelled out explicitly in order to make it absolutely clear. For this reason, everyone who attempted this question will receive full marks (0.5) for it, which will be added when we transfer your result from Moodle into WebCMS.
If you have a question about the other answers, please check the discussions on the forum first where I have already explained the perhaps most surprising ones, and if you require further help with understanding a question or answer, please come to one of my next consultation sessions.
Dear COMP9020 Student,
Unfortunately, there is an inreasing number of questions on the forum with details of the quiz questions being posted and help in understanding and answering the question being sought.
This is clearly not the idea of behind this assessment, which everyone needs to solve individually.
If you have serious doubts about the correctness of one of your questions or the options to tick, you can send me an email. In all other cases, you should try to understand and solve every question to the best of your knowledge and use your own judgement when you answer them.
From now on, please refrain from posting any more questions about the quiz on the forum until after the submission deadline.
Michael
The first quiz is well and truly underway. Good to see that everyone seems to have started wracking their brains.
I have received a couple of emails from students asking me whether their line of reasoning for a specific question is correct. As much as I would like to help, however, it would be unfair to everyone else if I did. It is part of the assessment for you to demonstrate your ability to understand a problem description and to judge your own solution.
If in doubt, try to re-read some of the lecture material and examples and then make your best judgement. And as much as you should of course aim for the highest mark all the time, do not forget that every single questions will count only at most 0.5 marks in the end.
Btw, if you have serious doubts about the correctness of a question or the answers offered, then please do not refrain from sending me an email.
Dear COMP9020 Student,
Welcome to this year's course.
