  • Final notice for COMP9020

Posted by Paul Hunter Monday 30 August 2021, 06:34:47 AM.

    Hi all,

You are now able to view your assignment marks for COMP9020. Please have a look via the course website and let me know if there are any gross errors/omissions. I am happy to give individual feedback if you want further clarification. Note that even though final results are being submitted, amendments can (and have) been made for several months.

It is against university policy to release provisional overall results before the official release of grades, so unfortunately I cannot release your exam results. Once those results are released however, I am happy to provide any additional feedback.

To conclude the course, I have posted a post-course poll (mirroring the pre-course poll) to see if this course has changed your mind one way or the other.

Thanks all (especially for putting up with the random zoom drop outs),

    Paul

  • Last general notice before final exam

Posted by Paul Hunter Thursday 19 August 2021, 05:52:31 AM.

    Hi all,

A reminder that the final exam for this course is due to start in 8 hours.

You access the final exam from the course's Moodle page here: https://moodle.telt.unsw.edu.au/course/view.php?id...

If you have not done so already, please access this page to check that you can see the information pertaining to the final exam and please register for the exam well in advance of the 13:45 start time. Registration involves completing a couple of forms and (I believe) following the link for the final exam which will be activated once you complete the forms. You will not be able to see the questions prior to 13:45. Please let me know asap if there are any issues with this first step - especially if you cannot see the forms that you need to complete.

    Solution content

I have finally managed to upload most of the outstanding solution content to the course website. This includes:

    • Solutions to the Assignments
    • The majority of solutions for the Practice Questions
    • Updated Lecture Slides with solutions to in-lecture exercises

In addition, I have uploaded a walkthrough of Assignment 1 solutions (available under "Lecture Recordings")

You may use any of the results proven in these solutions, and in the lectures and quizzes without further proof.

In particular, for Laws of Set Operations / Boolean Algebras / Propositional Logic, the following derived rules are acceptable:

    • Idempotence (x∧x = x and x∨x = x)
    • Double complement (x'' = x)
    • De Morgan's Laws ((x∧y)' = x'∨y' and (x∨y)' = x'∧y')
    • Annihilation (x∧0 = 0 and x∨1 = 1)
    • Complement of 0/1 (0' = 1 and 1' = 0)
    • Absorption ((x∧y)∨x = x and (x∨y)∧x = x)

    Questions

I will try to answer any questions prior to 1:30pm, and I will endeavour to do so as soon as I can. I have external commitments that may delay the response.

After the exam starts, questions must be directed towards the Exams support team (ph: +61 2 8936 7007). They will contact me and they have the ability to send a message to everyone on inspera (so I can be sure you all receive any updates).

I will try to read any direct correspondence, but it is likely you will not receive a reply during the exam period.

    Assessment feedback

External commitments stemming from the ongoing lockdown in Sydney have severely hampered my ability to provide feedback on assessments. These will be released as soon as I am able and you will have a chance to review them before results are completed.

    All the best,

    Paul

    Hi all,

To access the sample exam, go to:

    https://unsw.inspera.com

Log in using your zID and zPass

    Under "My tests" click "Register"

    Use the code: NSW-89136143

I'll put up sample answers shortly.

  • Additional consultation

Posted by Paul Hunter Monday 09 August 2021, 09:04:28 AM.

    Hi all,

I will be available for an extraordinary consultation this afternoon from 1pm - 2pm if you have any questions, especially about the ongoing quiz.

Apologies for the late notice, but the slot has just opened up,

    Paul

  • Course review poll

Posted by Paul Hunter Sunday 08 August 2021, 09:20:02 PM.

On Wednesday (from 12-2) I will be reviewing the topics covered this term in a lecture which is optional, but will be recorded.

I will go over the details of the final exam again, in case there are any questions.

I will also work through a couple of sample problems (if time permits). I will definitely cover a question on Combinatorics and Probability because there was not a lot of opportunity to assess you on these topics. I have set up a poll to gauge which topics you would most prefer covered, and I will answer sample problems on these topics based on their popularity for as long as time permits. Please take a moment (before Tuesday 11pm) to select the topics you would prefer covered.

  • Course review in Week 11

Posted by Paul Hunter Friday 06 August 2021, 10:47:23 AM.

    Hi all,

Because there is still a significant topic (Probability) to cover in today's lecture, I will be having an additional (optional) lecture in Week 11 (at the usual Wednesday slot) to cover the course review and answer any questions any of you have with regard to the course. Per university policy no new content can be introduced in this lecture, but it will be recorded.

I will be covering details of the final exam as part of today's lecture, but will revisit it next week.

Consultations will still be continuing as usual.

  • Welcome to COMP9020

Posted by Paul Hunter Monday 31 May 2021, 08:25:19 PM.

    Hi all,

Welcome to COMP9020 Foundations of Computer Science. This is just a brief announcement to introduce you to various aspects of the course: the website, the learning interfaces, and the staff (me!).

This term COMP9020 will be delivered completely online. I encourage you to familiarise yourself with the course website:

    http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~cs9020

as it provides the starting point for all aspects of the course.

Lectures begin on Wednesday (June 2) at 12:00 and will be delivered in real time on Zoom. Details of the lectures can be found on the course website once you have logged in to webCMS. Lectures will be recorded, and the recording will be available shortly after the lecture finishes. No assurance is made about the quality/completeness of the recording - so the only way to ensure you have best lecture experience is to attend the lectures!

There are no tutorials or classes for this course.

The course will be using the ed platform for course discussion. You should shortly be receiving an email inviting you to join the ed forum for this course.

In lieu of office hours, I have set up online consultation hours twice a week. These are intended to be student-driven and generally group-based. The course forums also provide a platform to ask questions and discuss the course material.

There is currently a pre-course, one-question questionnaire available here . It is by no means compulsory, and there is no right/wrong answer - I am primarily interested to see how (if at all) your perspective changes after taking this course.

Looking forward to virtually meeting you on Wednesday,

    Paul Hunter
    (Lecturer in Charge)
