  • Your Feedback

Posted by Michael Thielscher Wednesday 25 May 2022, 11:25:50 AM.

    Dear COMP9020 Student,

Before the new term begins, I want to thank everyone for your detailed feedback on myExperience. I was very happy to see a final response rate of 75% 😀 and that (almost) everyone who gave feedback was very satisfied with the course. I have read all your comments, and I will consider all your suggestions for further improvement at the next offering of this course.

My briefly discussing the most common mistakes in the quizzes at the beginning of each Wednesday lecture was positively commented on, but it was also said that a 5 minute break was a bit too short. I'll have to see how I manage to keep the former but also fit in a longer break.

Some of you would have preferred to detach the weekly quiz from the homework, and to provide solutions to the latter before the quiz. Unfortunately, this is rather difficult to achieve, both time-wise (as this would allow only 2-3 days for the problem set and another 1-2 days for the quiz before the next lecture) as well as with respect to content: If we keep the quiz similar to the homework, then it would no longer be suitable as an assessment component after solutions to the problem set have been posted, and if the quiz contains a new set of questions, then this would not be very different from the current setting except that there will be less time for the quiz. A possible solution, which one of you suggested, could be for me to recommend specific additional exercises from the textbook each week, which come with solutions in the book, and I think that's a good idea.

Have a good start into term 2 everyone,
    Michael

Your results are now available on WebCMS3 or from your CSE account using

    9020 classrun -sturec

    • FinalExam: Your mark for the exam
    • Sum and Grade: Your total score and mark in accordance with the Course Outline and as explained on slides 40-41, week 10

To pass the course, your Exam mark must be ≥25 and the Sum must be ≥50.

You can obtain detailed feedback on your marks for the exam on WebCMS3 by clicking on the little arrow in the row labelled FinalExam as indicated below:

    or by using:

    9020 classrun -collect FinalExam

Unfortunately I cannot reopen the Moodle exam for review since variations of these questions may be reused in another form in future exams. But if you did not pass the course and have further questions about your marks then you can email me personally.

The university has a policy to disallow any adjustments to near-misses of higher grades, and they use statistical methods to check for compliance. In a large class such as ours, invariably some of you will have been missing out on a higher grade by just 1 mark, in which case I apologise for what is simply bad luck, but please note that all open questions were marked individually and under the same marking criteria for everyone, and then we are not allowed to make individual adjustments.

For those of you interested in the overall statistics for 22T1 COMP9020, here it is:

    HD 19%
    DN 24%
    CR 21%
    PS 23%
    FL 13%

Congratulations to the following students for scoring 95 or higher:

    Ali Khan Tajwar
    Joe Doyle
    Hei Lok Keith Kong
    Carol Yu
    Xinyu Wang
    Raimond Darcy
    Zhiyue Zheng
    Kaibo Yang

    Well done!

Enjoy your term break, stay healthy and best of luck with your future studies.

  • Poll: Your timezone for the final exam

Posted by Michael Thielscher Thursday 07 April 2022, 08:24:07 PM.

    Dear COMP9020 Student,

Since we do have some liberty to set the time for the online final exam, I have started a poll to help us find a time that's suitable for most - hopefully all - of you.

You can access the poll here: Your timezone for the final exam

Participating in the poll is voluntary, but of course your participation will help us find a good time for the exam.

  • Mid-term test result

Posted by Michael Thielscher Friday 01 April 2022, 02:15:19 PM.

Your result in the mid-term test is now available on WebCMS. You can see your overall mark by clicking on the symbol indicated below:

We have also prepared individual electronic feedback with your detailed marks on WebCMS, which you can access from your result page by clicking on the little arrow indicated below:

Moreover, on Moodle you can now review your test and the marking of the multiple choice questions. Please do note that Moodle does not show your marks for the open questions; you can find these on your scoresheet on WebCMS as indicated above.

Please continue to respect UNSW's policy to not copy, record, photograph or translate any of the questions of the test. You can email me if you wish to further discuss your marks with me.

A word on the marking of Question 4: Some of you had been given an option that was referring to "equivalence ordering." This was (obviously?) meant to be "equivalence relation." But since an equivalence ordering does not exist, we have marked Q4 so that both solutions (i.e., selecting this option as well as not selecting it) are considered as correct. And, in the interest of fairness, we then also marked as correct both solution for everyone else's option "an equivalence relation ... can never be a partial order ..." (similar meaning but differently, and correctly, worded).

  • Welcome to COMP9020: Foundations of Computer Science

Posted by Michael Thielscher Friday 11 February 2022, 01:38:27 PM.

    Dear COMP9020 Student,

    Welcome to this year's course.

This is a reminder that the course will begin in week 1 on Wednesday (February 16) from 11am-1pm.

Meanwhile, have a look at the course webpage webcms3.cse.unsw.edu.au/COMP9020/22T1/ . Read through the "Course Outline" to learn more about the contents of the course, the assessment and recommended textbook.

As part of the safe return to campus programme, this course has been selected for face to face teaching. Lectures will take place in Ainsworth G03 (Building K-J17, which is attached to the CSE building). This is a very large lecture theatre allowing for ample space to physically distance.

Please note: While I encourage you to attend the lectures in person if and whenever possible, all of the course can be completed online, and you will not be disadvantaged if you are studying from overseas and cannot come to campus. All the lectures will be recorded, all the course material will be posted on the course webpage, consultations will be available online, and all the assessments, including the final exam, will be online, too.

    See you next week,
    Michael
