  • Marks (finally) and Thanks

    Hi all,

I have finally finished marking your exams and submitted your results for your final grade. It is against university policy for me to release final grades before the official release, but you should know them in a day or so.

Your assignment and [updated] quiz marks should now be viewable on sturec:

    https://cgi.cse.unsw.edu.au/~give/Student/sturec.php

Please let me know if there are any major omissions - although these are the marks that have been submitted for your final grade, it is still possible to make amendments for significant omissions even after your grades have been released.

I am always happy to answer any questions you have about any assessment grade.

Thank you all for a fantastic term of COMP9020. I love engaging with my students, and it was great to see so many of you still coming to the lectures and consultations at the pointy end of the term - we had upwards of 20% of the cohort coming to the consultations by the end, and nearly the same coming to the final lectures (who knew so many of you would be willing to listen to me waffle for hours).

Before we finish with the course, there is one last (one-question) poll for you. When filling it out, have a think about where you were at the start of the term, and what (if anything) you've learned from this course - big picture ideas, rather than things like "what a reflexive relation is"... I'd love to hear your thoughts (ed/email/in person/scrawled in icing on a chocolate cake).

There are two things I personally hope you take away from the course:

    • I hope you now feel prepared to be able to ask and/or answer "why?" - e.g. "why does Python use Timsort?"; "why do we learn recursion?"; or "why does this algorithm work?". And I hope you use this to help add some insight into your other courses.
    • You are not alone.

All the best in your future endeavours,

    Paul

  • Exam details

    Hi all,

The final exam for COMP9020 will begin in a little over 30 minutes.

    • The exam can be found on inspera and will become active at 13:45 (AEDST) .
    • You have 3 hours + 15 minutes to complete the exam.
    • Access to passive (i.e. pre-existing) material is permitted. This includes lecture slides (updated soon), assignment solutions, quiz answers, sample exam answers (just posted now under "Additional material →Sample Exam").
    • Accessing active sources (e.g. forums, chat, other people) is strictly forbidden . It is a breach of the Student Code of Conduct and significant penalties will apply
    • Answers must be typeset where appropriate. You may use the built-in drawing tool for diagrams - do not rely on copy-pasting of images. You may use the symbols toolbar on the course website to help with formatting; but as long as your notation is clear (or explained), any notation is acceptable.
    • A reminder that you are being assessed on ability and understanding - how you obtain an answer is more important than the answer itself. In particular, if you realise you've made an error somewhere you will achieve a better result by acknowledging the error instead of trying to pass it off.
    • Questions, including technical issues, should first be directed to the exams support team (exams@unsw.edu.au). There are some "blank pages" at the end of the exam if you experience minor technical issues with any of the question styles (e.g. drag-and-drop not working)
    • You may find it useful to have a pen and paper to work through some of the questions

    Good luck all,

    Paul
