Hi Everyone,
I have just emailed everyone who is registered with Special Considerations for the Sup Exam.
If you are registered with SC for the Sup Exam but did not receive and email from me with your examination details, then please email me asap. You will need to include your confirmation from SC.
All best,
Seb
Hello everyone,
I am messaging you to apologise with all of my heart for the horrible international student caps proposal put forward by the Australian government.
Many of you reading this are international students, and I am heartbroken that my government is bullying you. They are bullying you because it is politically convenient for them to do so, and that they know that you cannot fight back at the voting booth.
This is what bullying is - to leverage power over someone weaker than you, for mere personal gain.
I apologise also for the mean and horrid narratives in the Australian media right now. International students are being spoken about as though you are a crude resource. The people saying these things should know better.
Bullying international students is not wrong because it threatens the money that you spend here - it is not wrong because it threatens the fees that you pay that fund Australian universities - nor it is wrong because it threatens the "labour value" that you bring to our wonderful country.
It is wrong because it is cruel.
Cruelness is always wrong, and I have never been so ashamed.
Those of you reading this who are not international students, please be kind and courageous, and support our international friends.
I am proud of each and every single one of you. I am honoured to be your teacher. My government must not be allowed to get away with this legislation. I shall fight for you.
Sincerely,
Seb
Congratulations everyone!
Well done on your exams, and well done to all of your loyal tutors. The tutors moved heaven and earth to mark your exams as quickly and carefully as possible. Each questions was marked by the same marker(s), and all markers were in the same room together for the duration of the marking. There was a lot of discussion in order to ensure that the marks were fair and accurate. I was in and out of the room frequently, and part of a lot of the conversations.
As things stand (but read on), we have the following average marks:
Final Exam Average: 63.89%
Final Mark Average: 68.96%
These will increase! There are a number of people who have not yet sat the exam, and will be taking the supplementary.
Three cheers to all of you - and have a wonderful time before Term 3 - which is very very very very very soon....
All best,
Seb
Hi all,
Just a little note from me to thank all of you for your super hard work this term. Today's exam was huge - well done!!
I shall post the average mark for the exm and the average mark for hte course overall half way through next week. It will take a while to mark everything and chase up all of the loose ends, but we will get there asap.
Again, hooray!
All best,
Seb
Hi everyone!
The very best of luck to you today on the exam. You have all worked very hard this term, and I know that you will do well.
My top tip - you might find is easier work through all of the easier questions in each section first, and then come back to the harder ones.
Make sure that you are leaving yourself enough to work through everything, as well as to check your answers.
Do not obsess over a question that you cannot answer. Just leave it and come back to it at the end if you have time.
Make sure you bring enough pens/pencils!
You will need your zID. Make sure you know your zID. You will need your zID. You will need your zID. You will need your zID.
I wish you all great success!
All best,
Seb

Hi everyone,
If you have an Equitable Learning Plan (ELP) covering your final examination, or any form of Special Consideration (SC), then would you please email me as soon as possible. Even if you have emailed me about this before, please email me again. This covers everything from extra time allowed to accessibility requirements and so on.
There is a bit of a hiccup with the database and I need to make sure that we do not overlook anyone!!
All best,
Seb

Hi everyone! Your practice exam is up on webcms. You will find it under Course Work>Practice Examination.
Here is a recursive guide to the practice exam:
- Time yourself for three hours, and answer as many questions as accurately and carefully as you can, then stop.
- Spend the time needed going through and checking your answers very carefully.
- Do not work out any answers for any questions that you did not attempt in your first attempt at the practice exam. .
- Time yourself for another three hours, and start the exam from the beginning again. This time, the questions that you answered last time will be easier for you to answer, but it is important that you answer them from the beginning again. This time you will get further through the exam in your three hours that you did the first time.
- Spend the time needed going through and checking your answers very carefully. Including the ones that you answered and checked the first time.
- Time yourself for another three hours, and start the exam from the beginning again. This time, the questions that you answered first and second time will be easier for you to answer, but it is important that you answer them from the beginning again. This time you will get further through the exam in your three hours that you did the first second time.
- Spend the time needed going through and checking your answers very carefully. Including the ones that you answered and checked the first second time.
- Repeat repeat repeat...until you are making it through the practice exam in three hours and getting everything right.
- Note: I shall not be sending you the answers as you need to be working them out for yourself, slowly and carefully.
- Note also: Please make sure that you are working out the answers yourself, so that you are really really understanding them! If you do this, and do it properly, then you will do well in the actual exam : )
Hi everyone!
Please see the email from Andrew Taylor copied below for teaching EOIs for Term 3. Be sure to put 9020 first if you are interested!

Subject: applications open for 24T3 tutoring @CSE
UNSW Computer Science and Engineering employs students as casual tutors, demonstrators, markers, and consultants. Most commonly these students tutor or assist in a tut-lab in a first-year course such as COMP1511.
Successful applicants will need relevant experience and/or very good marks in relevant courses. Applications are also welcome from people who are not students, and from outside UNSW.
Application is a two-part process.
You must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in UNSW's employment platform UniHire (click on Apply Now).
If you previously submitted an EOI for work at CSE, please ensure your details are correct.
You must also submit an application on CSE's tutor selection platform talloc.
The Unihire EOI requires you to provide a referee. The referee doesn't have to be aware of your academic results. They do not need to know anything about UNSW or computing. Your referee will only be contacted if you are selected as a tutor. You may also be required to supply identification and other documentation if you are selected as a tutor.
Please submit your UniHire EOI and your talloc application by Sunday Aug 4. Positions will be progressively filled from Aug 5 until T3 o-week, Late applications will be considered if they arrive before positions are filled. You can update the information you provide at any time. Successful applicants will receive email.
Please select all courses in UniHire you are potentially interested in tutoring, and indicate your course preferences in talloc
Please ensure your availability is accurate and update your availability in talloc if it changes - courses use the availability information to allocate tutors to classes.
New CSE employees must attend a 2-hour in-person training session Sep 6 (Friday week 0) afternoon.
This will be followed by a 2-hour training workshop for people who are undertaking tutoring or lab demonstration for the first time. More details will be sent to successful applicants by Sep 4.
The Unihire EOI is for work at CSE only. Other UNSW schools will have their own Unhire pages.
Email teachadmin.casuals@cse.unsw.edu.au if you have problems with the application forms, but please don't ask if you can tutor a particular course, that will be the decision of the course lecturer.
This email has been sent to the thousands of students who've recently taken a CSE course. My apologies if you are not interested in tutoring.

I am looking very forward to seeing you all on Monday!

Hi everyone!
I have added the complete textbook solutions to webcms under "Course Work". You need to click "Download" to download the zip file.
All best,
Seb
Hi everyone!
I have put all slides for Week 2 slides up on webcms just now. I must apologise. I had put the Monday slides up on Monday morning but had not changed the permissions so that is was viewable by students : (
I have fixed the permissions and just finished the Tuesday slides a moment ago : )
I shall try to get the slides up each week as soon as possible I promise! I know how useful it is for everyone to be able to look over them beforehand.
See you is the Tuesday lecture, where we will all practice deductive inference in predicate logic. This is going to be a big big help when we look at number theory next week.
Please come to the lecture today if you can, as we need to vote on something important. It is a surprise!
All best,
Seb
Good morning good people of 9020!
Problem Set 1 is now available on webcms under Course Work. My advice is that you start early on this and all following problem sets. This is so that you have lots of time to think about your answers and to revise them in light of your thinking.
Please read both the questions and instructions carefully : )
All best,
Seb
The slides for today's lecture are now up on webcms under "Course Work>Lectures". All slides will appear here shortly after the relevant lectures as we go forward.
Hi Everyone!
The recording of the first lecture is now available on Moodle under "Lecture Recordings". This is available on both the side menu and as an icon on the main Moodle screen for 9020 (depending on how you have it set up).
Thank you so so much for making the first lecture so much fun!
All best,
Seb
Hi everyone! Welcome to COMP9020 : )
My name is Seb and I am your lecturer for COMP9020 this term. Welcome to CSE everyone! I am looking very forward to meeting you all next week : ) In the meantime, here are a couple of important bits of information for all of you. For those of you who are new to UNSW I know that things can be a bit confusing at first but please do not worry - you are in the very safe hands of a group of experienced tutors and there is nothing that we cannot fix together.
We are going to be using three online systems for COMP9020. These are (1) webcms, (2) Ed Forum, and (3) Moodle.
- if you are reading this online as opposed to in your email, then you are on webcms already. If not, then please go to webcms here - https://webcms3.cse.unsw.edu.au/COMP9020/24T2/.
- Please read through the Course Outline via the left hand menu of webcms. It has everything in it that you need to know for now, including the textbook information, assessment information, and so on.
- Webcms is also where you will find your weekly problem sets. The first problem set will be released in Week 2, and it will be due in Week 3 - so we have lots of time to get used to things.
- We will be using Ed Forum for course discussion this term. You can find the forum here - https://edstem.org/au/courses/16595/discussion/
- Moodle is where you will submit your weekly problem sets, starting in Week 3. When you log into Moodle here - https://moodle.telt.unsw.edu.au/ you should see COMP9020 as one of your courses. I shall explain how to submit your problem sets well before you need to do so, so please do not worry about this too much for now.
Please read the Course Outline in webcms!! Again, it has all of the timetable and textbook information and you need to know this : )
See you soon!
Seb
