Posted by Hao Ren Saturday 23 November 2024, 02:21:46 PM, last modified Saturday 23 November 2024, 02:22:11 PM.

    Dear Students,

    Good morning!

With the final exam approaching, I hope you feel confident in your preparation. Remember to take breaks and stay relaxed, as too much stress can impact your performance. The exam will be supervised by the UNSW Central Exam Team, and we will be available to address any potential questions during the exam.

Please note the following important details:

    Exam Details

The exam is supervised by the UNSW Central Exam Team, not the School of CSE. Please refer to your personal exam timetable for details about exam time, location, and other information. Jiaojiao also posted a guide days ago, you could refer to #445 .

    • Do not write or draw anything inside the QR code box at the bottom of each page. Altering the QR code may result in your answers not being saved.

    Tips Based on Midterm Experience

    • Writing Proofs :

When proving something, imagine your reader as an intelligent person with limited experience in the topic. Prove any steps that may not be immediately clear to avoid losing marks for skipping key details.
    • Filling the First Page :

Refer to the sample exam posted earlier for guidance on filling out your information correctly.
    • Saving Time :

Think carefully before writing to avoid errors. This can save time and effort in correcting mistakes.
    • Do not stress yourself out too much. I completely understand how exams can make students feel anxious, but try to take a deep breath and approach it one step at a time. Trust in the effort you’ve put into your preparation—you’re more ready than you think! Remember, staying calm and confident will help you perform at your best. 😸

Thank you for reviewing these important details. Please ensure you’re fully prepared and understand all the guidelines. Best of luck on your exam!

  • Sample Final Exam

Posted by Jiaojiao Jiang Friday 15 November 2024, 02:00:27 PM.

    Hi everyone!

The sample exam has been uploaded on WebCMS https://webcms3.cse.unsw.edu.au/COMP9020/24T3/resources/106973 . You will find it under Course Work>Exams>Final Exam.

Here is a recursive guide to the sample exam:

    - Time yourself for two hours, and answer as many questions as accurately and carefully as you can, then stop.

    - Spend the time needed going through and checking your answers very carefully.

    - Do not work out any answers for any questions that you did not attempt in your first attempt at the practice exam.

    - Time yourself for another two hours, and start the exam from the beginning again. This time, the questions that you answered last time will be easier for you to answer, but it is important that you answer them from the beginning again. This time you will get further through the exam in your two hours that you did the first time.

    - Spend the time needed going through and checking your answers very carefully. Including the ones that you answered and checked the first time.

    - Time yourself for another two hours, and start the exam from the beginning again. This time, the questions that you answered first and second time will be easier for you to answer, but it is important that you answer them from the beginning again. This time you will get further through the exam in your two hours that you did the first second time.

    - Spend the time needed going through and checking your answers very carefully. Including the ones that you answered and checked the first second time.

    - Repeat repeat repeat... until you are making it through the practice exam in two hours and getting everything right.

    - Note: please do not check the answers (which will be released next week) as you need to be working them out for yourself, slowly and carefully.

    - Note also: Please make sure that you are working out the answers yourself, so that you are really really understanding them! If you do this, and do it properly, then you will do well in the actual exam :)

    Warm regards,

    COMP9020

  • "No further quizzes (from week 10 onwards)" - corrected - should be from week 11 on

Posted by Jiaojiao Jiang Monday 11 November 2024, 10:39:26 AM, last modified Monday 11 November 2024, 12:42:07 PM.

    Hi everyone again,

Apologies for buzzing you again on Monday.

Just noticed a typo in my last post: it should be no quizzes from week 11 onwards (not week 10 in my last post), as you have completed 7 quizzes (not 8).

    "Hi everyone,

Just a quick note to remind you that there will be no quizzes from Week 10 onward .
You've all been working hard and have done great across all the past 8 quizzes . :)

Though we don't have a quiz this week, we still highly encourage everyone to attend the tutorials this week and solve the tutorial questions to help you reinforce your understanding of the concepts covered in lectures. "

    Warm regards,

  • No lecture in week 6 and Good Luck in your min-term exam this Friday : )

Posted by Jiaojiao Jiang Wednesday 16 October 2024, 04:55:05 PM.

    Hi everyone!

Please kindly note that there is no lecture this week (week 6).

The very best of luck to you this Friday on the mid-term exam. You have all worked very hard, and I know that you will do well.

My top tip - you might find is easier work through all of the easier questions in each section first, and then come back to the harder ones.

Make sure that you are leaving yourself enough to work through everything, as well as to check your answers.

Do not obsess over a question that you cannot answer. Just leave it and come back to it at the end if you have time.

Make sure you bring enough pens/pencils!

You will need your zID. Make sure you know your zID. You will need your zID. You will need your zID. You will need your zID.

I wish you all great success!

  • Potential Misconduct Risk for Attending "Classes" at Off-campus Organisations

Posted by Hao Ren Saturday 14 September 2024, 08:25:15 PM.

    Dear Students,

I have noticed that some students are attending tutoring sessions organized by off-campus institutions, which in itself does not violate any regulations. While we believe this is completely unnecessary and likely a waste of your time and money, the decision to attend is ultimately up to you.

However, I must clarify that if these "tutoring" sessions involve explanations of this semester's assessments, it will be considered seeking external help, which is against academic integrity rules. You are welcome to study the course material, but if you use any means to seek answers to assessment questions, even if the institution modifies the numbers in the problems, the work will no longer be your own. Please do not risk academic misconduct.

Again, if you have any questions, feel free to seek help from our dedicated teaching team. All of our tutors are enthusiastic, friendly, and highly skilled.

    Best regards,

  • Announcement: Tutorial 1 Materials Released

Posted by Hao Ren Saturday 14 September 2024, 03:42:18 AM, last modified Saturday 14 September 2024, 03:45:34 AM.

    Dear Students,

We are pleased to announce that the materials for Tutorial 1 are now available on the course platform. I know it sounds a little weird to send a notification at 3:40 AM (do not blame ▼・ᴥ・▼), but please make sure to review the following documents:

    1. Tutorial 1 - Specification : This is the essential material that all students are required to review. It contains the problems for tutorial, and also a summary of concepts for revision.
    2. Tutorial 1 - Extension - Number Theory : This is optional and intended for students interested in exploring deeper concepts in Number Theory.
    3. Tutorial 1 - Extension - Writing Proof 1 : This is also optional, for students interested in further developing their proof-writing skills.
    4. Solutions are also finished, but we will only release it once all class have their tutorial. You can expected to see it next Friday night.

While you are only required to complete the Specification , the Extensions offer additional learning opportunities for those who want to challenge themselves. The Extensions focus on concepts closely related to the course material but not typically covered in this entry-level course. We encourage students who are interested in expanding their knowledge or gaining a deeper appreciation of the course concepts to review these materials at their own pace. Please note that the Extension content will not be assessed, so feel free to explore it as you wish.

These materials were thoughtfully designed and written by our wonderful and knowledgeable tutors: Hao Ren, Ronald Chiang, and Varun Agarwal, with special acknowledgment to Cynthia Chen. The content has been reviewed by our lecturer, Jiaojiao Jiang. If you happen to find any typos or errors, please contact us via email—we would greatly appreciate your help in improving the course!

If you have any questions, do not be shy to reach out on Ed Forum , our kind teaching team would be glad to help you!

    Best regards,

  • Quiz 1 Released and Available Soon

Posted by Hao Ren Thursday 12 September 2024, 09:37:51 PM, last modified Thursday 12 September 2024, 09:41:33 PM.

    Dear Students,

I hope you're all doing well and enjoying the course so far.

I’m happy to announce that Quiz 1 has been released and is now available on Moodle under the "Assessments" menu. The quiz is due on Friday, Week 3 (27th September) at 23:59 . You are allowed one attempt , but there is no time limit . This means you can take your time before submitting, but once you submit, your answers cannot be changed. Make sure you finished all questions, then press "submit". The reason like click in mistake would not be accepted.

Quiz 1 is worth 40 marks and accounts for 2.5% of your total course grade (each mark is worth 0.0625% of your overall grade). If you need any extension, you need to submit the special consideration from myUNSW, which is managed by UNSW not course staff. We can not grant you a short extension. :)

Before starting the quiz, please carefully read the following instructions regarding academic integrity:

    • You must complete the quiz on your own. The use of simple calculators is allowed, but not any mathematical software.
    • Do not discuss the quiz problems with anyone in any type, except for course staff.
    • Do not seek help from others to complete the quiz , regardless of their level of involvement.
    • Do not upload your work anywhere , including Ed Forum.
    • Do not take screenshots or photos of the quiz and share them, even in private settings.
    • Do not use any AI tools to complete the quiz.
    • For quiz 1, you should only use a very basic calculator if needed.

For more information, please refer to UNSW’s academic integrity guidelines here .

There will be no tolerance for academic misconduct, so please don't put yourself at risk. If you encounter any issues, feel free to contact me directly via the course email. Do not post any answers or questions related to the quiz on Ed Forum.

I hope you enjoy this mathematical journey!

  • Welcome to COMP9020!

Posted by Jiaojiao Jiang Wednesday 11 September 2024, 02:00:46 AM.

Hi everyone! Welcome to COMP9020 :)

My name is Jiaojiao and I am your lecturer for COMP9020 this term. Welcome to CSE everyone! I am looking very forward to meeting you all this week :)

In the meantime, here are a couple of important bits of information for all of you. For those of you who are new to UNSW I know that things can be a bit confusing at first but please do not worry - you are in the very safe hands of a group of experienced tutors and there is nothing that we cannot fix together.

We are going to be using three online systems for COMP9020. These are (1) webcms, (2) Ed Forum, and (3) Moodle.

    - if you are reading this online as opposed to in your email, then you are on webcms already. If not, then please go to webcms here - https://webcms3.cse.unsw.edu.au/COMP9020/24T3 /.

    - Please read through the Course Outline via the left hand menu of webcms. It has everything in it that you need to know for now, including the textbook information, assessment information, and so on.

    - We will be using Ed Forum for course discussion this term. You can find the forum here - https://edstem.org/au/courses/19133/discussion/

    - Moodle is where you will find your weekly quizzes. The first quiz will be released in Week 2 (or earlier), and it will be due in Week 3 - so we have lots of time to get used to things.

    - Moodle is where you will submit your weekly quizzes, starting in Week 3. When you log into Moodle here - https://moodle.telt.unsw.edu.au/course/view.php?id=86732 you should see COMP9020 content. I shall explain how to submit your quiz well before you need to do so, so please do not worry about this too much for now.

Please read the Course Outline in webcms!! Again, it has all of the timetable and textbook information and you need to know this : )

    See you soon!

    Hi all,

I hope you are all settling into the course smoothly. I'd like to clarify the format of COMP9020 for this term, as there has been some confusion regarding the mode of delivery.

COMP9020 lectures will be delivered in person only . There are no online lectures or live streams for this course. The "WEB" class you may have selected during enrollment was simply due to room capacity limits, and all students are encouraged to attend the in-person lectures.

    Key Details:

    • Lecture Times:
      • Thursday, 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM, Science Theatre (K-F13-G09)
      • Friday, 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM, Mathews Theatre A (K-D23-201)
      • No Lectures in Week 6: There will be no lectures in Week 6 (mid-term break).
      • Lecture Recordings: Recordings will be uploaded after each class on Moodle.
    • Platforms for Course Materials:
      • Moodle: For assessments and lecture recordings.
      • WebCMS3: This is the main platform where most course content will be hosted.
      • Ed Forum: The primary communication platform for all questions and announcements.

Feel free to reach out if you have further questions. Thank you for your understanding, and I look forward to a great term with you all!
