Supplmentary Exams

We've received details about the supplementary exam schedule. Our supplementary exam is scheduled for next Friday , on the 26th of May , during the afternoon session between the hours of 1pm to 4pm Sydney local time.

According to the most recent records provided by STU, there should only be 5 students who are eligible for the supplementary exam.

Final Exam Paper Released

Hi Class,

The final exam paper has been released on WebCMS, accessible in the 'Final Exam Paper' Tab. The Moodle submission page will be active starting from 2pm. Please read the instructions and questions carefully and do let us know if there any problems with accessing the file.

Due to the webcms3 issue, the new deadline is 5:10pm.

Exam Tomorrow

Hello Class,

A reminder that the exam is scheduled tomorrow: between 2 pm - 5 pm (Sydney time) . We will release the final exam paper on WebCMS Final Exam Paper tab around 1:50 pm (10 minutes prior to the exam start time to allow extra time for downloading and uploading). You will also be notified via a WebCMS notice (emailed to all students) once the paper is released. And you will submit your solution through Moodle just like assignments.

During the examination

• If you have any concerns relating to the questions, there will be a Zoom meeting provided and you can ask course staff through chat. Please do NOT post anything on the forum, as it could be distracting to other students.
• If we are to make updates/clarifications to any questions. We will release updates both as WebCMS notices (also emailed to all students) and in the Final Exam Paper tab in WebCMS.
• Please allocate 5-10 minutes towards the end to submit your examination. Anything submitted after 5 pm will be ignored.

Please be well prepared for the exam. We will NOT provide any support for your own personal configuration or network-related issues. Download the slides in advance if you need . The website may be slow.

MyExperience and final exam consultation sessions

Two things here:

• Fill in the MyExperience survey please. The deadline is Thu, Apr 27 . As advertised, if the response rate from the class hits more than 50.0%, everybody gets 1 mark added to their final mark :-) ... CURRENTLY, at the time of this message, the rate is 48%.
• I will open one in-person consultation and one online consultation for the final exam. The details are shown as follows.
  • In-person : Tue, 2023-05-02, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm, at K17 201B Meeting Room.
  • Online : Tue, 2023-05-02, 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm, via Moodle - Blackboard Collaborate.

Project marks released and final exam time

Hello Class,

Marks and sample solutions for the project have been released. You can check your mark in Moodle and find the sample solution under the Project of WebCMS3. Please contact your marking tutor by THIS WEEK if you have any questions about your mark.

The final exam time will be on 2 pm - 5 pm Fri 05-May. As mentioned, this is an online exam. Also, there will be additional consultations before the exam (both in person and online). The detailed schedule will be released later.

The final lab practice has been released. In this lab practice, you can try on a different database SQLite.

Easter Monday and Sample Exam Paper

Hi Class,

It is a public holiday next Monday. Hence, there is no lecture. Enjoy your long weekend!

A sample exam paper and its solution are released, which can be found in the Sample Exam Paper Section of the menu. Please note that this is only intended to provide a good idea of the difficulty level you can expect from the final exam, so do not expect the scope, length, or question types to be the same.

There are also some exercises released in the Week 9 lecture materials, which may be helpful to work on Assignment 2.

So... Enjoy the weekend and see you next Wednesday :-)

Hello Class,

Assignment 2 is released and is now accessible under the Assignments section. The deadline for assignment 2 is Fri 21st April 5:00 pm.

A gentle reminder for students taking the course remotely outside of Australia. Daylight savings ended. Consequently, the local time in Australia has moved backward by an hour. It occurred to me that some students might not be aware of this and show up too early for the online scheduled lecture.

Project 1 specification is out

Project 1 is released now (under Project menu, WebCMS3). The deadline for project 1 is Fri 16:59:59 Mar 31st 2023 (Sydney Local Time).

Tips :

• Familiarise yourself with the project database first. Before attempting the queries straight away, try to examine what each relation holds and find out how relations might be related to each other.
• Set up the project database ASAP so the tutors can assist you with any related issues.
• Make sure that your solution can load and run correctly. You can check your answers using check.sql.

Assignment 1 is released (and also Lab 2)

Assignment 1 is released under the Assignment. The deadline for assignment 1 is Fri 16:59:59 10th March (Sydney Time).

Lab 2 is also released. You can work on Lab 2 in week 2 and week 3. There is no new lab practice for week 3.

Reminder : if you have some troubles with Lab 1, there will be a walk-through demonstration about Lab 1 at this Tuesday's help session (21st Feb 1:00 pm). The tutor will first demonstrate Lab 1, and then go back to the usual help session. The demonstration will be recorded, in case you want to recap :)

Server issue

We have noticed that a lot of students are having problems connecting to the server. This may be because the server is too crowded right now. We are contacting with system support team to resolve this issue. Please do not worry if you are currently unable to connect.

Hello Class,

The first setup lab (PostgreSQL) is released. Everyone should make sure that the setup is correct and you are comfortable using it. A lab exercise is not every week (six in total).

Online help sessions with the tutors are now scheduled from week 1. Go to 'Help Sessions' menu and follow the instructions. All help sessions are online (using Blackboard Collaborate via Moodle).

Hi Class,

Welcome to the course COMP9311! I hope you look forward to learning about database systems. In this opening notice, I outline how the course will run in T1 2023.

Course Webpages We manage the course with WebCMS3 and Moodle . If you’re reading this notice, congrats, you’ve found us. All announcements, lecture notes, lab notes, assignment specs, etc, are going to be posted here. Moodle is used to provide access to online live lectures, lecture recordings, and assignment submissions.

Lecture The lectures will be delivered in person at AinswthG03 (Mon/Wed). There will be online streaming lectures (e.g., via Blackboard Collaborate) at the same time.

Lecture Recording All lectures are recorded and uploaded onto Echo360, which can be found through the link (Access to Lecture Recordings) in Moodle.

Lab Practice Labs are released as self-guided exercises that are designed to be done in your own time. We will release the first week's lecture notes and lab exercise this Sunday (week 0 Sunday).

Help Session Online help sessions will be scheduled every week, starting from week 1. See the timetable in Help Session. The tutors can help you with labs, assignments, etc.

Exam The final exam will be conducted online.

Discussion Forum We will use Ed for the course forum/discussion board. Please use the link below to register yourself with Ed .
