  • Final Exam Tomorrow

Posted by Zhengyi Yang Thursday 17 August 2023, 10:34:03 AM, last modified Thursday 17 August 2023, 10:43:18 AM.

    Dear Students,

A quick reminder that the final exam is scheduled for tomorrow, between 9:00 AM and 12:25 PM (AEST) on August 18th. We will release the final exam paper on WebCMS at 8:50 AM (10 minutes prior to the exam start time) to allow extra time for downloading and uploading.

You will be notified via a WebCMS notice, which will also be emailed to all students, once the paper is released. Remember that you are required to submit your exam on Moodle.

Here are some important guidelines for the exam day:

    • If you have any concerns or questions about the exam questions, please send an email to me (zyang@cse.unsw.edu.au) AND cc the course email address (yiheng.hu@unsw.edu.au). Avoid posting queries on the forum to prevent distractions for others.
    • If any updates or clarifications are necessary for the questions, we will communicate them through WebCMS notices and the Exam tab in WebCMS.

Please allocate 5 minutes towards the end of the exam for submission. Submissions received after 12:25 PM will incur a significant late penalty of 5 marks per minute (unless you have adjustments based on an Equitable Learning Plan).

For detailed university guidelines on exam rules, I strongly encourage you to spend around 10 minutes reading through the contents of this link: https://www.student.unsw.edu.au/exam/rules .

Kindly ensure that you are well-prepared for the exam. Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide support for personal configuration or network-related issues during the exam. It might be a good idea to have your phone's hotspot ready for any unexpected network outages.

Lastly, I want to emphasize that the exam must be attempted individually. Engaging in group work or using generative AI tools can lead to academic misconduct. For more information, please review the details at this link: https://www.student.unsw.edu.au/plagiarism .

Wishing you all the best of luck in your exams.

    Warm regards,

    Zhengyi

  • Welcome to COMP9311

Posted by Zhengyi Yang Friday 26 May 2023, 03:03:22 PM.

    Hi Students,

Firstly, welcome to the course COMP9311. I hope you look forward to learning about database systems. In this opening notice, I outline how the course is run in 2023T2.

As required by UNSW, all students must return to campus in 2023T2. So we will run most of our course face-to-face. Specifically, lectures are in-person only with recordings. Lab sessions are mostly face-to-face with a small number of labs online. We will also run online help sessions (i.e., consultations) every week to answer further questions you may have.

We manage the course with WebCMS3 and Moodle ( https://webcms3.cse.unsw.edu.au/COMP9311/23T2/ and https://moodle.telt.unsw.edu.au/course/view.php?id=75964 ).
If you’re reading this notice, congrats, you’ve found us.
All announcements, lecture notes, lab notes, assignment spec, etc. are going to be posted here.
Moodle is used to provide access to and lecture recordings, online labs/consultations, and assessment submission.

Lectures start from Week 1 :
We will deliver lectures at the scheduled lecture time 10:00 – 12:00 Monday (Science Theatre) and 15:00 – 17:00 Thursday (Rex Vowels Theatre). All lectures will be recorded, which can be found on Moodle after the first lecture.

    Labs start from Week 2:

    1) Face to Face Labs: You may either use the lab computers or your own computer. A tutor will present in the lab to assist you and answer your questions. There will be no recordings for f2f labs.

2 ) Online Labs: Detailed lab notes will be provided, and you are expected to follow the guide using your own computer. We will schedule online lab sessions throughout the course (via Blackboard Collaborate) and there will be tutors present to help you.
You are able to access it via Moodle. All online labs will be recorded.

    Do not
attend the lab if you feel unwell, and you can make up the labs by attending any of the online labs.

    Consultation starts from Week 1:
Weekly consultation will also be presented via Blackboard Collaborate. You may join the consultation if you have any questions regarding the course. Consultations will be recorded. A link will be provided in the Consultation tab for you to join, also you may join via Moodle. Consultations will be held 10:00-12:00 Thursday before the lecture.

On Assessments: The final exam will be conducted in-person, DO NOT take this course if you are not able to attend the in-person final exam. For other assessments, we generally give 2-3 weeks for you to work on assignments and projects.

Ed Forums: You can start using the Ed forums (linked on WebCMS menu) to ask questions and engage with other students. Tutors will visit the forum regularly to answer questions. Please let me know if you are unable to access.

Best of luck, and I look forward to meeting you all (in some capacity) soon.
