  • Clarification on operation order and time slots in Assignment 2

Posted by Xingyu Tan 13 days ago, last modified 13 days ago.

    Dear Class,

You may notice that, in Assignment 2, some schedules show several operations on the same data item in the same time slot. When this occurs, please assume the operations are carried out in the order of the transaction numbers —for example, T1 first, then T2, and so on.

Each “time slot” represents a span of time rather than an exact instant, and two operations on the same item do not happen simultaneously. For example, in Question 2, two operations on D appear in time slot t7; treat the operation from T1 as occurring first, followed by the T4.

Because a time slot is only an interval, whenever you need to refer to a precise moment in the assessment, please use phrases such as “immediately after time slot ti ” or “between ti and tj.” This wording will make your explanation clear.

Thank you for your attention, and please let me know if any part of the assignment needs further clarification.

    Best regards,

    Xingyu

Posted by Xiaoyang Wang 15 days ago.

    Hi Students,

    Two things here:

    • Fill in the MyExperience survey, please. As advertised in the class, if the response rate from the class hits more than 50.0% , everybody gets 1 bonus mark added to the final mark :-)
    • A sample exam paper and its solution have been released on WebCMS3 . Please note that the sample paper is just a reference. The final exam might have a different number of questions, scopes, and difficulty levels.

We will talk about the final exam in Thursday's lecture. See you!

  • Welcome to COMP9311 25T1

Posted by Xiaoyang Wang 3 months ago.

    Hi Class,

Welcome to the course COMP9311! I hope you look forward to learning about database systems. In this opening notice, I outline how the course will run in T1 2025.

Course Webpages We manage the course with WebCMS3 and Moodle . If you’re reading this notice, congrats, you’ve found us. All announcements, lecture notes, lab notes, assignment specs, etc, are going to be posted here. Moodle is used to provide access to online live lectures, lecture recordings, and assignment submissions.

Lecture The lectures will be delivered in person at AinswthG03 (Tue/Thu). There will be online streaming lectures via Blackboard Collaborate at the same time. You can find the link in Moodle.

Lecture Recording All lectures will be recorded and uploaded onto Echo360, which can be found through the links (Lecture Recordings) in Moodle.

Lab Labs start from Week 2. Due to the limited space of school labs, we have to run BYOD labs face-to-face in classrooms. So you need to bring your own laptop. During the lab, a tutor will be present to assist you and answer questions.

Consultation Weekly consultation will be presented in-person and online via Blackboard Collaborate from Week 1. You may join the consultation if you have any questions regarding the course.

Discussion Forum We will use Ed for the course forum/discussion board. You have to register yourself first . The forum link and instructions are linked on the WebCMS3 menu .

Exam The currently plan is in-person exam. If you cannot sit the offline exam, do not take the course.

Other than that ... nothing much you need to do until you see me on Tuesday!

Best of luck, and I look forward to meeting you all soon!

    Xiaoyang Wang
