  • Final Exam Tomorrow

    Dear Students,

    Please carefully read the following instructions regarding the final exam:

    Location:

    • Ensure you arrive at the correct venue 30 minutes early .
    • Please bring valid identification, e.g. a UNSW Student ID card, driver’s license, or passport (physical copy).

    Time Allowed:

    • 14:00 – 16:10.
    • The exam duration is 2 hours , with an additional 10 minutes reading time .

    Format & Questions:

    • Closed-book, paper exam with invigilation.
    • There will be 6 questions in total .
    • You may attempt the questions in any order.
    • Marks for each question will be clearly indicated on the exam paper.
    • Scratch paper is provided at the back of the exam booklet. No additional sheets will be given.

    Writing:

    • Answers must be written in ink .
    • Pencils may be used for diagrams, drawings, or sketches.

    Restrictions:

    • No notes, textbooks, cheat sheets, or calculators are allowed.
    • No hats, watches, or earphones may be worn during the exam.
    • All electronic devices must be switched off and stored in your bag.

    Important Notes:

    • If you are unwell on the exam day, please do not attend . You should apply for Special Consideration (no supplementary exam will be granted if you sit the exam).
    • Ensure you correctly fill in your zID on the answer sheet.
    • You are not allowed to leave your seat during reading time, in the first 10 minutes, or in the last 10 minutes of the exam.

    • The final exam is a closed-book paper exam . No exam materials are permitted.
    • There are no assigned seats for this exam. You only need to remember your assigned room, not a specific seat. The seat number shown on the allocations page is only for balancing room capacity.
    • Your allocation will be used to mark attendance on the day.

    Dear Students,

    Project 1 has been released and is available on WebCMS under "Course Work" β†’ "Project" .
    The submission deadline is 5:00 PM on Monday of Week 7 (14 July) , and submissions must be made via Moodle .

    Tips for Getting Started:

    • Please review the "relation diagram.svg" file provided on the Project page, and make sure you understand the database schema before starting.
    • Carefully read the project specification and ensure you understand all the requirements.
    • Make sure to test your code on the vxdb01 server before submission, as we will evaluate your work on that server.
    • We strongly recommend that you start early to allow sufficient time to complete the project.

    Reminder: Assignment 1 was due yesterday. A 5% penalty per day applies for late submissions, and no marks will be awarded for submissions more than 5 days late , so please ensure you submit as soon as possible if you have not already done so.

    Welcome to the course COMP9311 – Database Systems . This week is O-Week, and we hope you're excited to begin your journey into databases.

    In this opening notice, we outline how the course will be run in Term 2, 2025, and provide key information to help you get started.


    Course Format

    COMP9311 will be delivered in a multi-modal format:

    • Lectures will run in hybrid mode β€” both face-to-face and live-streamed, with recordings available.
    • Labs will be held in-person , where you will work on your own laptops .
    • Consultations (help sessions) will be available in both face-to-face and online formats.
    • Online forum support will be available throughout the term.

    Lectures

    Lectures begin in Week 1 and are scheduled as follows:

    • Tuesdays : 14:00 – 16:00 at Colombo Theatre A (K-B16-LG03)
    • Thursdays : 14:00 – 16:00 at Colombo Theatre A (K-B16-LG03)

    Live online lectures will occur simultaneously. You can access them:

    Labs

    Labs begin in Week 2 .

    Please note:

    • Labs are face-to-face and operate under a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) model.
    • Ensure your laptop is fully charged before attending.

    • Tutors will be available in each lab to provide guidance and answer questions.
