    Dear Students,

if you have been approved to participate in the supplementary exam please be advised for the following:

    • the exam is on Thursday the 26th of May @ 13:00 and conclude @ 15:15 (2 hours and 15 minutes).

    • it worth to iterate and elaborate about something. we are going to use Moodle quiz bank for the MCQ. you can attempt the MCQ multiple times and only the last attempt that you have click "submit answers" will be considered. as the questions are randomized from the quiz bank, that means if you make new attempt you will get new set of questions.
    • one more thing to emphasize, all answers should be in your own words. copy/paste from any source will get you zero and possible case of student misconduct.

  • Assignmnet 3 marks

Posted by Mehmet Rad Monday 09 May 2022, 01:19:09 PM, last modified Monday 09 May 2022, 01:19:31 PM.

    Hi Everyone,
As you may already know Assignment 3 marks were released a few days ago and it was updated on the same day to resolve the issue in the calculation of metrics based on your output files.

You can still request a re-assessment. However, before contacting tutors pls check if the output files which are generated by your scripts are correct:

    • Have the same number of rows as the marking-test datasets
    • The "SK_ID_CURR" column contains valid IDs from the marking-test dataset (not random or any sequential IDs). These are important and without correct IDs, your models can be verified.

For invalid output files, you will lose marks for performance and calculation of metrics (because they cannot be assessed)
Regarding the performance marks, it is based on how well your model performed on the marking-test dataset, and meeting the baselines does not mean that you will get a full mark.
If you have already contacted us, there is no need for a new request.

    Cheers,

    Mehmet (Mohammadali)

  • Important: Metric Calculation Error

Posted by Mehmet Rad Thursday 05 May 2022, 01:51:33 PM.

    Dear All,
There is a problem with the metric calculation script, and some students have lost marks incorrectly.
Please ignore your current feedback and mark, I will modify the marks and feedback today and will inform everyone.

Sorry for the mistake and thanks for being patiant.

  • Assignment 3 Mark Clarification

Posted by Mehmet Rad Thursday 05 May 2022, 01:19:51 PM, last modified Thursday 05 May 2022, 01:35:22 PM.

    Dear All,
Please read the following prior to contacting the tutors:

    • Performance Mark for Part 1 and 2 is based on how well your model worked in comparison to other students. If you get a full mark you will not receive any comment on this part (only if you lose marks)
The peformance Mark is also based on your output files not the SUMMARY files
    • Regarding the calculation of the metrics, there are mainly three reasons why you are losing mark:
      1. Your output files are not generated
      2. Your output files do not have the same number of rows as the test dataset
      3. More commonly, your claimed performance (e.g., accuracy) does not match what you predicted (we are calculating these metrics based on your output files and the test dataset). If your claimed performance in the summary file does not match that of the output file, you lose your mark.

  • IMPORTANT - Assign3 Marks are Released

  • Waiving the late penalty for Assignment3 based on the MyExperience Survey participation

Posted by Morty Al-Banna Wednesday 20 April 2022, 12:52:03 AM.

    Dear All,

First, I would like to thank all the students who have participated in the MyExperience survey. In order to motivate the remaining students to participate we decided to tie the level of participation to waiving the late penalty for assignment3.

Based on the level of participation in the MyExperience survey, we will waive the late penalty as below:

    • If we reach 40% participation, we will waive the late penalty for all the students being 1 day late.
    • If we reach 60% participation, we will waive the late penalty for all the students being 2 days late.
    • If we reach 80% participation, we will waive the late penalty for all the students being 3 days late.
    • If we reach 95% participation, we will waive the late penalty for all the students being 5 days late.

Pay attention that we are NOT extending the deadline . No Matter which condition is met, if you submit your answers after 5 days of the original deadline (without approved extension) your submission will NOT be marked.

We will make a daily announcement to share the participation level, so you will have an idea of what condition is met. This is an interesting case of how the community can come together to support each other. So even if you do not need the additional time, you might think of participating to help your fellow classmates. (Yes, we are being cheeky here 😊). Remember to share with us what you liked, and what you want us to improve. We really appreciate all feedback.

If you have any question or if anything is not clear, please feel free to contact us.

    Best of Luck,

    COMP9321 Teaching Team

  • Welcome to Week10 of COMP9321

Posted by Morty Al-Banna Tuesday 19 April 2022, 01:14:56 PM, last modified Tuesday 19 April 2022, 01:15:32 PM.

    Dear All,

Welcome to Week10 of COMP9321. Congrats for reaching the end of the term. I hope you have enjoyed the course as much as I have enjoyed teaching such brilliant students as you are.

For this Week, we are going to continue with Data Analytics. We will be finalizing Decision trees, talk about DeepLearning on a high level, talk about recommender systems, and finally we will discuss the final exam and what to expect.

This is the last week for labs. Make sure you make use of the consultation labs which run for everyday of the week. Check the timetable section for the times.

As always, in the beginning of Tuesday lecture, we are going to acknowledge the learning effort done in DataCamp, and award 1 bonus mark for each of the top3 on the XP ranking leader board. As mentioned last week, if there is a student who has maxed-out of bonus points, then we will look at the next top ranking.

In regard to the quizzes, Quiz5 (the last quiz) will be released this week (today Tuesday). Remember to submit before the deadline.

Regarding Assignment3, I hope that you have already made some good progress and looking at optimization now. The assignment is due Friday, so make sure to submit on time to avoid late penalties. We will also double up the tutor availability for Thursday and Friday. If you have any question, do not hesitate to drop by to the consultation labs, use the forum, or send your question to the course email.

As the end of the term is drawing near. Please if you may make sure to fill the MyExpreience Survey ( https://myexperience.unsw.edu.au/ ). It is super important to us to know your opinion, and how we can improve future offerings. You can help us by letting us know what worked and what we need to improve.

We, as the COMP9321 teaching team, appreciate to have been given the opportunity to interact with you all. We are rooting for you and wishing you all the best.

As always, remember to have fun and enjoy the learning experience. :)

    Cheers,

    Dear All,

Welcome to Week7 of COMP9321. Hopefully, you enjoyed an activity free flexibility week and looked after yourselves.

For this Week, we are going to finalize the topic of REST Services and start with the third phase of the course, which is Data Analytics. In the third phase, we focus on how you can apply some basic machine learning algorithms to generate useful insights from the data. As I mentioned in the beginning of the term, we are not building algorithms from scratch in this course, but rather leverage libraries like Scikit-learn to apply Machine learning.

The Lab activities for Week7 are now available. We encourage you to do them at your own convenience. As always, we have consultation labs for everyday of the week. Check the timetable section for the times.

As always, in the beginning of Tuesday lecture, we are going to acknowledge the learning effort done in DataCamp, and award 1 bonus mark for each of the top3 on the XP ranking leader board. So, keep up the good work.

In regard to the quizzes, just a heads-up, we will be releasing Quiz3 on Tuesday (Week7), Quiz4 on Week9 and Quiz5 on Week10. Remember to submit before the deadline.

Regarding Assignment2, remember that it is due next week on Monday (Week8). I hope that you all have made good progress by now. For this week we are going to double up the tutors on the labs on Thursday and Friday to make sure everyone gets a chance to get help if needed.

  • Milestone achieved (COMP9321 Week5)

Posted by Morty Al-Banna Monday 14 March 2022, 01:42:26 PM.

    Dear All,

Welcome to Week5 of COMP9321. Congrats, we are halfway through. I am proud of you all.

For this Week, we are going to cover the topic of REST Services. This is the second phase of the course, where we focus on how you can allow your data to be consumed as a web service. We are going to consider how you can consider your Web API RESTful, some best practices and how you can leverage the existing Python libraries to help you build your REST Web API.

The Lab activities for Week5 are now available.

In relevant topic, your classmate Timothy has shared a blogpost he made about exploring your data ( https://webcms3.cse.unsw.edu.au/COMP9321/22T1/blogs/post/42760 ). Feel free to check it out. Thanks, Timothy, for sharing.

One of your classmates raised an excellent point about the quiz deadline technically falling within the weekend (thanks Toshihiro for bringing this up). I have extended the deadline for Quiz2 till midnight today (i.e., Quiz2 will be due Monday 14 th of March 23:59 Sydney time). Best of luck to all.

In regard to Assignment1, remember that it is due this week. I hope that you are all finalizing and polishing your submissions by now. Again, I want you to remember that the assignment is on the scale of a small individual project. You have the say of how you may do somethings, as long as you are fulfilling the requirements. When we say, “it is up to you”, it means we are NOT going to penalize you regarding your methodology. Think about it this way, if we are going to do a UAT (User Acceptance Test), will your project pass or not? (This is just an analogy). The assignments are there to help you practice what you have learned, and the marks are there to give you feedback to improve.

The COMP9321 teaching team is always rooting for you and here to help. Do not hesitate to use the forum to ask as many questions or contact us via the course email.

As always, remember to have fun and enjoy the learning experience. :)

    Cheers,

  • Welcome to Week4 of COMP9321

Posted by Morty Al-Banna Monday 07 March 2022, 02:07:18 PM, last modified Monday 07 March 2022, 02:08:20 PM.

    Dear All,

Welcome to Week4 of COMP9321. Things are getting more interesting…

For this Week, we are going to cover the topic of Data visualization. Visualization is a very important topic. We are going to learn what makes a good visualization, and how we can apply our knowledge in Python and Pandas to generate some useful visualisations.

The Lab activities for Week4 are now available. We encourage you to do them at your own convenience. As always, we have consultation labs for everyday of the week. Check the timetable section for the times.

It is really exciting to see many students using the DataCamp platform. I really admire your passion to learn. If you have not yet joined, feel free to do so (if you like) using the invite link in the activity section of WebCMS. In the beginning of Tuesday lecture, we are going to acknowledge the learning effort done in DataCamp, and award 1 bonus mark for each of the top3 on the XP ranking leader board.

Quiz2 will be released after Tuesday lecture. Make sure to participate before the deadline.

Assignment1 specification was released last week. I can already see many interesting conversations in the forum. Remember that the assignment is on the scale of a small individual project. Utilize your analytical skills and what you have learned in the course. Start early and ask as many questions as possible in the Forum and/or the consultation labs.

  • Assignment1 clarifications

Posted by Morty Al-Banna Saturday 05 March 2022, 02:34:16 PM.

    Dear All,

Thank you for your comments on the draft of the assignment specification. We have made some adjustments to the wordings and added some guidance. the guidance is specially relevant to Question1 (start and end). We believe that the specs should be in the final form now.

An important things to remember with the assignment, is that it is a small scale individual project. You are responsible to meet the requirements, There might be more than one way to meet them, and we kept some things open to encourage creativity. The Datasets are real world datasets, since we didn't want to breed misconceptions by manafactruing a dummy data ourselves. The submissions will be marked manually.

I encourage you to start working on the assignment early. Do not leave it till the last minutes, when it will be harder for you to get support or find available time in the consultation labs to ask questions.

    best of luck to all...

    Dear All,

As mentioned in Week3 Tuesday lecture, we have got a 6-month subscription to DataCamp for free to students in COMP9321. Using DataCamp is purely optional as an external resource to help you practice and self-learn.
