Dear All,
We know that Week11 is full of assignments deadlines and exam preperations. So for today lecture, we are just going for an overview of what we covered in the course and then open the floor for any questions.
If you have not participated in the MyExperience Survey till now, please do so. We really appreciate all feedback provided and it helps us improve.
Wishing you all the best in meeting any deadlines in this week, and in the final exams starting next week.
COMP9321 Teaching Team
Dear All,
Thank you all who have participated in the MyExperience survey. We really appreciate your feedback.
It is our pleasure to provide the status, as we have reached 63%. Effectively this means, that waiving the Late penalty of assignment3 for 2 days is in the bag.
We will post another update if we reach another milestone.
Thank you all,
COMP9321 Teaching Team
Dear All,
Thank you all who have participated in the MyExperience survey. We really appreciate your feedback.
It is our pleasure to provide the status, as we have reached 56.85%. Effectively this means, that waiving the Late penalty of assignment3 for 1 day is in the bag.
We will post another update if we reach another milestone.
Thank you all,
COMP9321 Teaching Team
Dear All,
First, I would like to thank all the students who have participated in the MyExperience survey. In order to motivate the remaining students to participate we decided to tie the level of participation to waiving the late penalty for assignment3.
Based on the level of participation in the MyExperience survey, we will waive the late penalty as below:
Pay attention that we are NOT extending the deadline . No Matter which condition is met, if you submit your answers after 5 days of the original deadline (without approved extension) your submission will NOT be marked.
We will make a daily announcement to share the participation level, so you will have an idea of what condition is met. This is an interesting case of how the community can come together to support each other. So even if you do not need the additional time, you might think of participating to help your fellow classmates. (Yes, we are being cheeky here 😊). Remember to share with us what you liked, and what you want us to improve. We really appreciate all feedback.
If you have any question or if anything is not clear, please feel free to contact us.
Best of Luck,
COMP9321 Teaching Team
Dear All,
Quiz5 is released.
best of luck to all...
COMP9321 Teaching team
Dear All,
Welcome to Week10 of COMP9321. Congratulations for reaching the end of the Term. I hope that you have enjoyed the ride 😊
For this Week, we are going to continue with Data Analytics. We are going to look at decision trees, recommender systems, and brief intro about Deep Learning. We are also going to look at some examples of the final exam questions.
In regard to the quizzes. Quiz5 will be released after Wednesday lecture. Remember to submit before the deadline (which will be Wednesday week11).
For the students debating the marks for assignment1, we still have few cases that were escalated, and we are going through a team discussion. I hope that we will get to conclusion today or tomorrow.
Regarding Assignment3, remember it is due on Friday. We hope that you are at the phase of tweaking and polishing your submissions. As mentioned before, for the ML problems an iterative approach is better be considered. Question everything, your selection of features, your selection of ML Model, and your initialization of any parameters. The Assignment is on the scale of a small individual project, so remember to treat it as such. Please utilize the consultation labs and the WebCMS forum for support. Don’t leave the questions to the last minute.
Finally, MyExperience survey is available for participation. Please if you may take few minutes to participate and provide us feedback. We really appreciate your feedback.
The COMP9321 teaching team is always rooting for you and here to help. Do not hesitate to use the forum to ask as many questions or contact us via the course email.
As always, remember to have fun and enjoy the learning experience. :)
Cheers,
COMP9321 Teaching Team
Dear All,
Welcome to Week9 of COMP9321. We hope that you had a good Easter break and used some time to look after yourselves.
For this Week, we are going to continue with Data Analytics. We are going to look at clustering and some other classification ML models using Scikit-learn.
The Lab activities for Weeks 9 and 10 are now available. We encourage you to do them at your own convenience. As always, we have consultation labs for everyday of the week. Check the timetable section for the times.
In regard to the quizzes, just a heads-up, Quiz4 is due today. Quiz5 will be released in Week10. Remember to submit before the deadline.
If you are debating the marks awarded for assignment1, please remember to reach out to the tutor who marked your submission (it is mentioned in the feedback). If after the discussion, you are still unsatisfied and you want to escalate, please copy the LiC in the email thread you have discussed the submission with the tutor.
Regarding Assignment3, we Hope that you have already went through the specification and got an understanding of what needs to be done. As mentioned in the lecture, as a general rule, for the ML problems an iterative approach is better be considered. Question everything, your selection of features, your selection of ML Model, and your initialization of any parameters. The Assignment is on the scale of a small individual project, so remember to treat it as such.
The COMP9321 teaching team is always rooting for you and here to help. Do not hesitate to use the forum to ask as many questions or contact us via the course email.

COMP9321 Teaching Team
Dear All,
Welcome to Week7 of COMP9321. Hopefully, you enjoyed an activity free flexibility week and looked after yourselves.
For this Week, we are going to finalize the topic of REST Services and start with the third phase of the course, which is Data Analytics using Machine Learning. In the third phase, we focus on how you can apply some basic machine learning algorithms to generate useful insights from the data. As I mentioned in the beginning of the term, we are not building algorithms from scratch in this course, but rather leverage libraries like Scikit-learn to apply Machine learning.
The Lab activities for Week7 are now available. We encourage you to do them at your own convenience. As always, we have consultation labs for everyday of the week. Check the timetable section for the times.
in the beginning of Monday lecture, we are going to acknowledge the learning effort done in DataCamp and the students who participated in this optional challenge.
In regard to the quizzes, Quiz1 first question has been under some review according to the feedback from your classmate (thanks, Liam Hudson). As we consider each activity in the course as part of the learning experience, so it was decided to consider option B in Question 1 to be one of the correct answers (see Liam’s blog about it here ( https://webcms3.cse.unsw.edu.au/COMP9321/23T1/blogs/post/51445 ). There will be no penalty for both cases (if you have selected option B or did not select option B). We will also talk about this in Monday lecture. Also remember that Quiz3 is due today, so if you have not submitted it yet, do it ASAP.
Regarding Assignment2, remember that it is due next week on Tuesday (Week8). I hope that you all have made good progress by now. Again, I want you to remember that the assignment is on the scale of a small individual project. You have the say of how you may do somethings, as long as you are fulfilling the requirements. Please feel free to utilize the Forum in WebCMS or attend the consultation labs for any question.
The COMP9321 teaching team is always rooting for you and here to help. Do not hesitate to use the forum to ask as many questions or contact us via the course email.
As always, remember to have fun and enjoy the learning experience. :)
Cheers,
COMP9321 Teaching Team
Dear All,
Just a reminder that assignemnt1 is due today. Please submit on time to avoid late penalties.
best of luck,
COMP9321 Teaching Team
Dear All,
Welcome to Week5 of COMP9321. Congrats, we are halfway through.
For this Week, we are going to cover the topic of REST Services. This is the second phase of the course, where we focus on how you can allow your data to be consumed as a web service. We are going to consider how you can consider your Web API RESTful, some best practices and how you can leverage the existing Python libraries to help you build your REST Web API.
The Lab activities for Week5 are now available. We encourage you to do them at your own convenience. As always, we have consultation labs for everyday of the week. Check the timetable section for the times.
To accommodate the many requests to extend the submission deadline for Quiz2 and to be considerate that Sunday night might not be ideal as a deadline, so I have extended the deadline for Quiz2 till midnight today (i.e., Quiz2 will be due Monday 13 th of March 23:59 Sydney time). For all the coming quizzes we will have the hard deadline being a Monday before midnight. By the way, Quiz3 will be released this week after the lecture and the due date would be Week7 Monday (to avoid having any deadline falling in flexibility week). Best of luck to all.
In regard to Assignment1, remember that it is due this week. I hope that you are all finalizing and polishing your submissions by now. Again, I want you to remember that the assignment is on the scale of a small individual project. You have the say of how you may do somethings, as long as you are fulfilling the requirements. Think about it this way, if we are going to do a UAT (User Acceptance Test), will your project pass or not? (This is just an analogy). The assignments are there to help you practice what you have learned, and the marks are there to give you feedback to improve. Use the forum in WebCMS and the consultation labs if you require support.
We are doing some last reviews to assignment2 that will be released end of this week. It is a pretty exciting one and I hope that you will enjoy working on it. A heads-up assigment2 worth 20% of the course mark and it consider elements from working with Data and creating a data service to allow the consumption of the data.
The COMP9321 teaching team is always rooting for you and here to help. Do not hesitate to use the forum to ask as many questions or contact us via the course email.
As always, remember to have fun and enjoy the learning experience. :)
Cheers,
COMP9321 Teaching Team
Dear All,
Quiz2 is released. You can attempt the quiz only one time (so only press the link when you are ready). Please make sure that once you start the attempt, you answer all the questions and avoid having the session idle for long. Pay attention that some questions may have multiple answers. You need to select all the correct answers (if applicable) to get the marks.
Quiz2 could be accessed ( Here ) or from the activity section in WebCMS.
Best of luck to all...
COMP9321 Teaching Team
Dear All,
Welcome to Week4 of COMP9321. Things are getting more interesting…
For this Week, we are going to cover the topic of Data visualization. Visualization is a very important topic. We are going to learn what makes a good visualization, and how we can apply our knowledge in Python and Pandas to generate some useful visualisations.
The Lab activities for Week4 are now available. We encourage you to do them at your own convenience. As always, we have consultation labs for everyday of the week. Check the timetable section for the times.
It is really exciting to see many students using the DataCamp platform. I really admire your passion to learn. If you have not yet joined, feel free to do so (if you like) using the invite link in the activity section of WebCMS. I have created a challenge that worth 2 bonus marks (we explained what bonus marks are and where they add up to in the first lecture). The challenge is totally optional and you could do it if you interested in the guided project mentioned. The guided project is provided by the platform and not custom project.
Quiz2 will be released after Wednesday lecture. Make sure to participate before the deadline and remember for Quiz2 and all the coming quizzes you only have one attempt on each.
Assignment1 specification was released last week. I can already see many interesting conversations in the forum. Remember that the assignment is on the scale of a small individual project and the dataset we are using is a real world dataset coming from external source (i.e., we have not synthesized the data). Utilize your analytical skills and what you have learned in the course. Start early and ask as many questions as possible in the Forum and/or the consultation labs. The assignments are there to help you practice what you have learned, and the marks are there to give you feedback to improve.
The COMP9321 teaching team is always rooting for you and here to help. Do not hesitate to use the forum to ask as many questions or contact us via the course email.

Dear All,
Welcome to Week3 of COMP9321.
For this Week, we are going to continue with Data pre-processing/wrangling and how you can work with the data to improve its quality and relevancy. Expect more in-lecture exercises. We will also start with Data visualization as well.
The Lab activities for Week3 are now available. If you have not checked them out, we encourage you to do them at your own convenience. Another reminder, that we have consultation labs for everyday of the week. Check the timetable section for the times. Lab activities are not marked, but they are super important to help you get the required knowledge and skills to solve the assignments.
I hope all of you submitted Quiz1 already. You can view the correct answers for the quizzes after three days of the submission deadline. As I mentioned in the previous announcement, for Quizzes starting Quiz2, you will have only one attempt at the quiz. The Quiz is not timed, but you need to be careful not to keep the session on hold for too long.
A reminder for students who have not joined the course in MS Teams, please join ASAP. All the live lectures and Consultation Labs are on MS Teams.
We are giving assignment1 specification some reviews, and you should expect the release this Week. It should be tons of fun.
The COMP9321 teaching team is always rooting for you and here to help. Do not hesitate to use the forum to ask as many questions or contact us via the course email.
As always, remember to have fun and enjoy the learning experience. :)

Dear All,
As the purpose of the Quizzes are not to disadvantage students, but to motivate you to go through the material we cover in the lecture, so in order to be fair to all, we decided to extend the deadline for all Quizzes to be Sundays Midnight.
Additionally, for Quiz1 only (i.e., this time only ), we are allowing multiple attempts to the quiz and only the last attempt will be marked. For future quizzes, there will be only one attempt.
If you have not noticed in the lecture, I mentioned that as WebCMS does not support timed quizzes, so there will be no timer. You need to be careful of the session getting expired. Once you are ready to take the quiz, start the attempt, answer the questions and submit.
Best of luck to all...
