Equation 1 in Quiz 2 has been updated. Please make sure you work on the latest version (Tuesday 12th September, 2017 at 16:25). Thanks to Felix Abrahamsson for pointing out the original typo.

Assignment 1 submission deadline has been extended to Friday September 8th at 23:59, so students can attend the usual consultation on Thursday before the deadline.
Unfortunately, I cannot make it to today's consultation due to illness. For now, please post all questions to the forum.
I am unable to hold the consultation hour tomorrow (Thursday 31st August). However, as I am aware of the assignment deadline next week, I will make myself available on Monday 4th September at 12pm, K17 building room 412b (you will need yo call me from the telephone at level 4).
If you have any pressing question regarding the assignment or related material, please post it to the class forum and I will try to answer as soon as possible.
Marks for quiz 1 have been uploaded to SMS and they should be available shortly via:
(1) command line on CSE workstations:
9418 classrun -sturec
(2) Give/SMS's own web interface
Please note that Webcms3 is not currently able to access SMS databases.
I will also share a link with each student's email address with the feedback soon.
Finally, solution to the quiz can be found on the course website: Course Work -> Quizzes -> Quiz 1

It seems that the link in Moodle to lecture recordings is now working. Unfortunately, because of issues with HDMI and Mac, there is only audio available for the first lecture. Video will be available from the second lecture.
(1) Please use the Front Page Forum for all issues regarding the course (i.e. avoid using all the other forums and also avoid emailing me).
(2) A link to lecture recordings is now available on the course website (on the menu as Course Work -> Lecture Videos). However, it seems that there was an issue with the video (audio seems OK) for the first lecture and IT is looking into it.
Welcome to COMP9418, Advanced Topics in Statistical Machine Learning. This is a new course being offered for the first time in 17s2. It aims to provide an in-depth study of statistical machine learning approaches, with a focus on methods for learning and inference in structured probabilistic models.
We'll be using WebCMS3 as the platform for content management in our course and a skeleton Course Website is already in place. The Course Outline has more detail on what's in the course and how it will run.
I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday 26th July at 12:00 at OMB 230.
