  • There is a mistake in Question 3, alternative 3

Posted by Gustavo Batista Monday 07 December 2020, 11:45:53 AM.

    The correct wording is:

    3. [ ] Learning DAG structures is always better than learning tree structures. The addition of new edges to tree structures will transform the tree into a DAG and will never decrease the log-likelihood of the network.

    Sorry for the mistake.

    Gustavo.

Posted by Jeremy Gillen Wednesday 02 December 2020, 02:08:33 PM.

    Hi everyone,

Assignment 2 Marks have been uploaded. You can access the detailed breakdown under the Collect Submission tab on the Assignment 2 page. The Assignment 2 marking guide is available on the Assignments page, and provides a description of each part of the mark.

The same assignment mark should appear on the Grades page within 24 hours. If you haven't done so already, now would be a good time to double check all the marks on the Grades page to confirm they are what you expect.

    Regards,

    COMP9418 Team

There were several errors caused by missing files. I think this was caused by give not accepting files unless they have certain file extensions. This is mostly my fault. I've changed the settings so that all file extensions are now accepted. If your submission was affected by this, you can resubmit ASAP and I will rerun your submission and send you the results.

If you need it, I can send the full error traceback of any solutions where an error occurred. Just email me.

  • Assignment 2 efficiency marks

Posted by Jeremy Gillen Thursday 19 November 2020, 05:27:01 PM.

    Hi everyone,

We have received several questions relating to how marks will be assigned for different levels of efficiency, so we are adding a little more detail about those marks.

There is 20% of the assignment mark assigned for quality, readability and efficiency of the code. Half of this will come directly from efficiency.

Marks will be assigned based on the length of time it takes for your program to process 10 days of data:

    10/10 <200s

    8/10 <300s

    6/10 <400s

    4/10 <500s

    2/10 <600s

    0/10 >600s

So if the 10 day test runs in 250 seconds, you will receive 8 out of 10 of the efficiency marks.

  • Strict time limit on Assignment 2 final test

Posted by Jeremy Gillen Tuesday 17 November 2020, 10:58:36 PM.

    Hi all,

We set a time limit on the final submission: the test must run in 1800 seconds for 10 days (180 seconds per day). If it takes longer, it will be cut off, and receive 0 for the programming section. This has been added to the assignment page. You should aim to be much faster than this.

The next leaderboard has a stricter cut off, it will timeout if your program runs in more than 600 seconds (otherwise it might take too long to get the results back to you).

    Regards,

    Jeremy

  • One last Assignment 2 leaderboard

Posted by Jeremy Gillen Tuesday 17 November 2020, 03:00:58 PM.

    Hi all,

To give everyone a chance to do a final test of your model before submission, we will run another leaderboard on Friday night. Submissions will be due at 6pm, and the results will be announced by Saturday morning.

You will not be able to score bonus marks on this leaderboard. I'll set the timeout to 10mins (1min/day). You should still aim for less than 5mins (30seconds/day), I just want to make sure the slower submissions still get some feedback, even if you haven't finished improving the efficiency of your code.

I won't run anything slower than 10mins, because I expect there to be a lot of submissions for this one, and it will take a long time to run all of them.

    2. Questions that require a textual answer (50%).
    3. Programming questions in Python (30%).

The exam will require less than 3 hours. Therefore, you must reserve at least 3 hours to work on the exam on that day. We will not enforce you to submit the answers in 3 hours. The only requirement is that you submit your exam before the 24h deadline (7/12/2020 at 23:59 AEST). No late submissions will be accepted.

In case you do not submit your exam on time, we will consider that you did not take part in the exam. You will need to apply for a supplementary exam.

We will make a sample exam available to you in Week 10. The answers for the sample exam will be public on WebCMS in Week 11.

To solve the exam programming questions, you will need to have access to a computer with the same libraries used in tutorials. You can use the UNSW CSE VLAB computers using software such as TigerVNC. However, keep in mind that such setup may require an internet connection with an adequate bandwidth.

The exam will be an open book exam. Therefore, you are permitted to access papers and books as well as the course materials, including slides and solved tutorials. You are not permitted to communicate (email, phone, message, talk, etc.) with anyone during the exam, except COMP9418 staff via email or forum.

Deliberate violation of exam conditions will be referred to Student Integrity as serious misconduct.

  • Assignment 1 marking scheme

Posted by Jeremy Gillen Monday 09 November 2020, 10:55:05 PM.

    Hi everyone,

The test cases/marking guide for Assignment 1 is available here . This will help for understanding the Assignment 1 mark breakdown. If you think a mistake has been made with your grade, you can discuss it with your tutor if there's spare time in your tutorial, or if there's not, you can email me.

I will be doing a consultation hour tomorrow at 11am. You can find the meeting on Teams, under the "Tutor consultation meetings" channel. This is intended for assignment 2 questions, but if there's spare time I can also answer questions about assignment 1.

    Regards,

    Jeremy

  • Another Assignment 2 clarification

Posted by Jeremy Gillen Monday 02 November 2020, 07:20:24 PM.

    Hi all,

We decided to release a little more information that may be useful for Assignment 2:

The number of people who come to the office each day varies
according to this distribution: num_people = round(Normal(mean=20, stddev=1)). This information was obtained from records of the number of workers present each day.

I added this to the specification

  • Stureps/CSE 20T3/21T1 survey

Posted by Gustavo Batista Thursday 29 October 2020, 02:42:48 PM.

    Dear students,

We have received the results of the Stureps/CSE 20T3/21T1 survey. Thanks for those that answered the survey call.

Regarding COMP9418, the survey identified three main issues:

    1. Need for more consultation hours
    2. Additional help with the assignments
    3. Improve slides quality including catching typos

Therefore, we will take the following actions:

    1. I will provide one more consultation hour per week, on Tuesdays from 6 pm to 7 pm, starting next week. We anticipate that week 10 will have a higher demand for consultation. In this week, we will have three more consultation hours provided by the tutors. All consultations will run on MS Teams.
    2. Jeremy will give special consultation hours for assignment 2 on weeks 9 and 10. We think that this will be the period of highest demand.
    3. I will collect typos, errors, bugs, etc. in the course material and provide a revised material on week 10. Therefore, the material will be ready to be used as a reference for the exam.

I apologise for the typos in the slides. Most of them are being used for the first time in this course.

    Regards,

    Gustavo.

  • Assignment 2 Leaderboard

Posted by Jeremy Gillen Thursday 29 October 2020, 12:39:07 PM.

    Hi all,
We will be running a leaderboard in the two weeks leading up to assignment 2 submission. To enter each round, you must submit (via give) before Sun 8th Nov 6 pm (first round) and Sun 15th Nov 6 pm (second round). The results will be released the following day.

The top 5 scoring teams on each round will receive up to 5% bonus marks on the assignment. The first place will receive a 5% bonus, second place 4% and so on. This bonus may help make up for marks lost elsewhere in the course.

The requirements to compete in the leaderboard are the following:

    1. Your model must perform better than the trivial models that keep all lights on or off during the entire simulation.

    2. The wall clock execution time should be less than 30 seconds per day of simulation.

    3. You submit your code before the due date. No late submission will be accepted.

The leaderboard will show the zID of each submission, the final cost of the code (averaged over 10 runs), and the wall clock execution time. Therefore, by submitting to the leaderboard, you agree to have this information published in the course forum.

When submitting your code, the submission system will force you to include 'report.pdf'. It's fine for this to be a blank pdf for the leaderboard submissions.

  • Assignment 1 Task benchmarks

Posted by Jeremy Gillen Monday 12 October 2020, 01:43:38 PM.

    Hi all,
There have been a lot of questions about the execution time for each assignment function.
For reference, here are the wall clock running times of my code, when run on the cse servers. cv_bayes_net took 25s, cv_naive_bayes took 45 seconds, and cv_tan took 46 seconds.
I used dictionaries for memoization to speed up some functions, which sometimes halved the time. This isn't required.

Please note that the MyUNSW timetable is incorrectly showing some tutorials as online, when they are actually in-person. If you are unsure of which tutorial you are enrolled in, you can use the list below and the Course Outline to confirm the location of your tutorial. If you want to swap to a different tutorial, please do so on MyUNSW. This page may help for working out class codes for swapping to a specific tutorial.
