Dear students,
The School informed me that the supp exam is confirmed for 12th January from 9 am to 9 pm (Sydney time). The supp exam will have the same format as the exam.
Only students that were granted a supp exam from the School (potential graduands) or special considerations are allowed to participate.
Regards,
Gustavo.
Dear COMP9418 students,
We have released the exam marks, and they should appear in give in the next 24 hours.
Here are some statistics about the exam marks, starting with a histogram.
15.40 |2 | 23.80 |2 | 32.20 |10 | *** 40.60 |15 | **** 49.00 |12 | *** 57.40 |15 | **** 65.80 |20 | ****** 74.20 |8 | ** 82.60 |4 | * 91.00 |4 | * ----- |-- | -------
The maximum exam mark is 91, and we decided to normalise all exam marks, resulting in the following histogram.
16.93 |2 | 26.16 |2 | 35.39 |10 | *** 44.62 |15 | **** 53.85 |11 | *** 63.08 |16 | ***** 72.31 |19 | ****** 81.54 |8 | ** 90.77 |5 | * 100.00 |4 | * ------ |-- | -------
We computed the course marks, which resulted in the following histogram.
16.47 |1 | 25.24 |2 | 34.02 |8 | ** 42.79 |6 | ** 51.56 |3 | * 60.33 |15 | ***** 69.11 |14 | **** 77.88 |21 | ******* 86.65 |11 | *** 95.42 |7 | ** ----- |-- | -------
We also released the solution file for the exam. It is available on WebCMS and includes the test cases used for Q8 and Q9. Look at the exam solution carefully before reaching us.
Thank you very much for being a student of COMP9418. I (Gustavo) would like to thank the tutors (Payal and Peng) and course admin (Jeremy) for their assistance during the course.
Happy holidays!
Gustavo (on behalf of the COMP9418 team)
Hi all,
We are 50 minutes from the end of the exam period.
If possible, avoid submitting your work at the last minute.
Regards,
Gustavo.
Hi all,
There was a bug in the GaussianFactor evidence method provided for the exam, we have uploaded a fixed version of the file.
We will test using the fixed version of the method, and if you have submitted your own version of the file we will test with both and use whichever works better.
Dear students,
I hope you are well. Some comments after two hours of exam:
1. The exam ends at 9 pm Sydney time (AEDT). I incorrectly wrote 9 pm (AEST) in the exam file.
2. dsep(A, B, C) means A is d-separated of C given B. Same applies for sep(A, B, C).
3. Q5 is a modelling problem. You will need to make some reasonable assumptions given the problem description.
Regards,
Gustavo.
Hi all,
We just finished marking Assignment 2, I just uploaded the marks. Note that a detailed mark breakdown and comments can be accessed on the "collect submission" tab. I will upload the marking guide used to mark the reports onto the Assignment 2 page.
Let us know if anyone didn't receive a mark or if there were any mistakes.
Hope you're all doing okay this exam period,
Jeremy (on behalf of the 9418 team)
Dear students,
This is the last call! :)
MyExperience survey closes tomorrow at midnight Sydney time.
We appreciate your feedback.
Regards,
Gustavo (on behalf of the COMP9418 team).

Hi all,
Just want to remind you that if you submit an early version of your assignment code tomorrow before 6pm we will run another leaderboard so you can test your model. The results will be released on Saturday morning.
Good luck!
P.S.
The quiz 8 deadline has been delayed by 24 hours so that you don't have to worry about the quiz and assignment submission at the same time. Assignment 2 is Sunday 6pm as always, Quiz 8 is now Monday 6pm.
Hi all,
I will run another leaderboard on Friday at 6pm, and announce the results on Saturday morning.
Here's the results from the leaderboard this morning. The cost is averaged over 10 runs on different days of data. The time indicates the total number of seconds it took to run the test. New data will be generated and used when we are marking.

Dear students,
Welcome to Week 10.
In this final week, you will find lectures about learning structure and parameters in graphical models. The tutorials are about belief propagation and sampling.
Reminders:
Regards,
Gustavo (on behalf of the COMP9418 team).
Hi everyone!
As noted in the Assignment 2 specification, you have a chance to test your submission against some validation data. To participate, simply submit your model before Monday 15th 9am, and I will run the testing system with newly generated data. I will post the scores achieved and time taken by each submission on WebCMS on Monday afternoon. Please only make one submission per team.
Even if you haven't finished your final model, it's worth submitting anything that works just to confirm you understand the testing conditions and get some idea of whether your model has overfitted to the training data.
Dear students,
Welcome to Week 9.
You can find the course material for this week on WebCMS. This week topic is approximate inference, and we cover Belief Propagation and Sampling. The tutorials will cover Gaussian Models, including Kalman Filters.
We have released Exam 2020 as a sample exam. You can find the questions and answers on WebCMS (under Course Work/Exam).
Also, myExperience survey is open. Please, take a moment to answer the survey form before 25/11. The feedback from previous students helped us to improve COMP9418 significantly. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.
Finally, do not forget to submit your answers for Quiz 7 before Sunday 6 pm.
Regards,
Gustavo (on behalf of the COMP9418 team).
The assignment 2 specification forgot to specify that the core graphical model can't just be the sklearn implementations of Naive Bayes or HMM. It has been updated.
Hi everyone!
I hope everyone is doing well. Assignment 1 marks have been released, and the assignment page has been updated to show the marking guide. You can access a breakdown of the marks on the "collect submission" page. Let me know if any of the marks aren't showing up there.
If you need to clarify the reasoning for your marks, you may contact the the tutor that marked your assignment. Please check the marking guide first.
Jeremy (on behalf of the 9418 team)
Dear students,
We are approaching the end of the term. We have recently received the information that the COMP9418 exam will run Tuesday, 7/12/2021 .
The exam will last for 12 hours, starting 7/12/2021 at 9:00 am AEST and finishing at 9:00 pm AEST. We will answer questions during the entire exam period. During this time, any issues should be posted in the WebCMS forum (general matters) or sent by email to cs9418@cse.unsw.edu.au (sensitive ones).
The exam will be available in WebCMS. It will be a Jupyter notebook. You must write all answers in the notebook and submit them by give (command line or WebCMS) before the deadline.
The exam will have three parts:
The exam will require less than 3 hours. Therefore, you must reserve at least 3 hours to work on the exam on that day. We will not require you to submit the answers in 3 hours. The only requirement is to submit your exam before the deadline (7/12/2021 at 21:00 AEST). No late submissions will be accepted. If you do not submit your exam on time, we will consider that you did not take part in the exam. You will need to apply for a supplementary exam.
Some students may have another exam allocated on the same day (morning or afternoon). In this case, you should reserve your free period for the COMP9418 exam.
To solve the exam programming questions, you will need a computer with the same libraries used in tutorials. You can use your computer, Google Colab or the UNSW CSE VLAB computers using software such as TigerVNC. The exam will be an open book exam. Therefore, you are permitted to access papers and books and the course materials, including slides and solved tutorials. You cannot communicate (email, phone, message, talk, etc.) except with the COMP9418 staff via email or forum. Deliberate violation of exam conditions will be referred to Student Integrity as serious misconduct.
We will make a sample exam available to you with answers next week (Week 9).
Assignment 2 has been released. It is due on Sunday 21st of November.
Let us know via the forum if you have any doubts about the specification.
Good luck!Dear students,
Welcome to Week 7.
You can find the course material for this week on WebCMS.
We will release the second assignment description later this week.
Finally, do not forget to submit your answers for Quiz 5 before Sunday 6 pm.
Regards,
Gustavo (on behalf of the COMP9418 team).
Dear students,
Welcome to Week 6. This week is flexibility week, and we do not have any new content, lectures, tutorials, quizzes or consultation hours. You can use this time to catch up with the course content.
Please, take your time to fill in the 2021 Student Experience Survey (SES). You should have received a link via email. Otherwise, you will find a link to the survey on Moodle.
Regards,
Gustavo (on behalf of the COMP9418 team).
