Dear students,
I executed the final test cases, and I would like to report some errors that can be fixed before the standard late submission deadline.
If your submission is not listed below and it was submitted before 10 august, 8 AM, it means it executed correctly under the time limit. The final marks will be reported later when we conclude marking.
Regards,
Gustavo.

COMP9418 Assignment 2 -- leaderboard (average cost over 100 hidden episodes, the same episodes for every submission; lower cost is better)
BENCHMARKS (not ranked -- shown so you can see where you stand)
mean_cost ms/episode mark/50
oracle (knows ground truth) 345.3 0.00 50.0
reference model 662.7 9.96 47.4
reactive baseline 1004.2 0.07 33.2
never-quarantine (0-mark line) 1838.0 0.03 0.0
What the benchmarks are:
* oracle : a policy that knows each person's hidden true status and quarantines each at the best possible shift.
* reference model : a simple probabilistic-graphical-model solution.
* reactive baseline : quarantines a person as soon as their rapid antigen or PCR test reads positive, and clears everyone else.
* never-quarantine : clears everyone every shift (the trivial do-nothing policy).

Dear students,
UNSW has informed us that the COMP9418 final exam will be held on Tuesday, 25th August 2026, in the CSE labs. The exam will be in-person and invigilated, with a total duration of 3 hours.
We will begin at 9:45 a.m. with:
- 5 minutes allocated for seating
- 10 minutes of reading time
The exam working time is from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The exam will be delivered as a Jupyter notebook, and you must write all your answers directly in the notebook. It will consist of three parts:
- Multiple-choice questions
- Short-answer questions
- Python programming tasks
This is an open-book exam. You are allowed to bring:
- One A4 sheet of notes, written on both sides (harndwritten or printed)
- A UNSW-approved calculator
We will also provide all course material in digital format on the exam machines. A folder alongside the exam notebook will contain:
- The course textbook
- All lecture slides
- All tutorial notebooks and solutions
- Previous exams with solutions
- A LaTeX cheat sheet, in case you wish to typeset mathematical notation in your written answers
This material is provided for reference only. It is not a substitute for preparation. There will not be time to learn the content during the exam.
The notebook will run in a standard Python environment with the packages used throughout the course. You will not be able to install additional packages.
Internet access will not be available during the exam. This includes WebCMS and all other online resources.
Your room and seat allocation will be available at the following link:
https://cgi.cse.unsw.edu.au/~exam/26T2/seating/register.cgi/allocations/
Regards,
Gustavo.
Dear students,
The myExperience survey is open. Please take a moment to complete the survey form by August 13th. The feedback from previous students helped us significantly improve COMP9418, and we greatly appreciate your feedback. You can access the survey form using this link:
The myExperience survey.
By the end of this week, we will run a leaderboard for the second assignment. Please ensure you have submitted your solution before Sunday (August 2nd) at 6 pm. You can submit a simple code, just to test the submission system. These submissions will not be graded.
We have also released the marks for Assignment 1. You can view your results at:
https://cgi.cse.unsw.edu.au/~give/Student/sturec.php
Please review the test cases provided on WebCMS (available on the Assignment 1 page). If you have any concerns about your marking, contact us via cs9418@cse.unsw.edu.au. For general questions about the assignment, feel free to post on the WebCMS forum.
Finally, remember to submit your answers for Quiz 7 before Sunday at 6 pm.
Regards,
Gustavo.
Dear students,
The description for Assignment 2 is now available. We will run a leaderboard on Sunday, August 2nd. To participate, please submit your solution by 6 p.m. on that day. The leaderboard will allow you to test your code against hidden test cases. The final submission deadline for Assignment 2 is Sunday, August 9th.
Finally, don’t forget to submit your answers for Quiz 6 by Sunday at 6 p.m.
I will make an additional announcement when we have finished marking the first assignment.

Dear students,
Welcome to COMP9418!
I look forward to seeing you at our inaugural lecture on Wednesday, where I’ll explain the course structure, expectations, and logistics.
In the meantime, I’d like to highlight some optional preparatory materials available on our course website: https://webcms3.cse.unsw.edu.au/COMP9418/26T2/

Since most students have encountered this content before, it’s not required. However, if you’d like a refresher, you may find the following resources helpful (under the Week 0 section):
In Week 1, we’ll begin with Bayesian Networks —a simple yet powerful and interpretable model. Tutorials will introduce key ideas in probability and start building a Python library that you’ll use throughout the course assignments.
We hope you enjoy the course and look forward to working with you!
