Dear Students,
Just a reminder that the final exam will be available from 8 AM AEST on Monday 22 August 2022 to 8 AM AEST on Tuesday 23 August 2022 via the link Final Exam Paper within the Final Exam section of COMP9517 22T2 on Moodle.
In other words, you have 24 hours from the time the exam paper is released until the submission deadline. Please notice the deadline is hard and late submissions will not be accepted . Also, if you're in a different time zone, please mind the time difference . The given times are in AEST (Sydney Australia time).
You must use one of the templates provided in the Final Exam section on Moodle to write your exam report. Your exam report must be submitted using the link Final Exam Submission via Turnitin . Do not use the file upload box within the Moodle quiz. You will be allowed unlimited submissions up to the deadline.
If you have any questions about the exam during the day, please email them to cs9517@cse.unsw.edu.au . Someone from the team will be available from 8 AM AEST to 8 PM AEST on 22 August 2022 to answer questions sent to that email address only .
Instructions on what to do in the event of technical issues or illness during the exam are included at the start of the exam paper.
We wish you good luck with the exam!

Dear Students,
Sample exam materials are now available under WebCMS3 > COMP9517 > Assessments > Exam.
As explained in more detail there, the exam consists of reading an assigned scientific paper and writing a commentary on it, using the knowledge you have acquired in the course.
The materials include a sample exam paper, sample exam templates in various formats, and three examples of scientific papers with corresponding commentaries that received high marks in previous terms.
This should give you a good idea of what to expect in the exam on 22 August 2022. If you have any general questions, please post them in the Ed forum so other students may benefit from the answers too.
Good luck with the final exam preparations!
Cheers,
Erik
Dear Students,
The COMP9517 exam will be on 22 August 2022.
More specifically, there will be 24 hours between the release time and the submission deadline: from 22 August 2022 8:00AM AEST until 23 August 2022 8:00AM AEST.
Note that the exam itself should not be more than about 3 hours of work, which you can complete and submit anytime during the above period, thus avoiding conflicts with other exams.
Best wishes,
Erik
Dear students,
When submitting your assignment, please try to compress it as much as possible, even if it does not exceed the maximum file size limit. Tonight, we ran out of disk quota allotted to us by the system, and I had to move everyone's demos elsewhere. So please do your best to compress the size when submitting your report, thank you for your cooperation.
Dear Students,
As we managed to schedule all group project demos in the Week 10 Friday 1-3 PM lecture/consultation time slot, we decided to use the Week 10 Tuesday lecture time slot for a guest lecture from an external speaker. This is a pre-recorded talk, which has already been uploaded to Echo360, so you can watch it at any time that suits you. There will be no livestream.
Specifically, the talk is from Dr Tomasz Bednarz, about his work at the EPICentre (Expanded Perception & Interaction Centre), which is a shared UNSW research facility located at the UNSW Art & Design campus. The talk is about applied hybrid analytics and computer vision applications for research and industry. Dr Bednarz recently became a Director of Strategic Researcher Engagement at NVIDIA.
We hope you will find the talk inspiring as it showcases a wide range of computer vision methods and applications.
And we wish you all the best with the group project demos and Q&A on Friday!
The COMP9517 Team

Dear Students and Tutors,
All students have now been allocated to a project group. Please check the group you have been allocated to, under WebCMS3 COMP9517 --> Course Work --> Assessments --> Project .
This term, we have paired tutors for the Lab and Project Consultations, which means there are two tutors for answering questions in each Lab/Project Consultation session. With the more experienced tutor, we hope you can get better learning.
The first lab session will be held on Moodle on Friday 10 June, 2:00-3:00pm. To find the link to your session, please go to Moodle --> Lab/Consultation Sessions --> {Your tutor name}'s Session.
Note that only your session's link labelled with your tutor's name will be available to click. All other links will have a message: " Restricted Not available unless: You belong to a group in...".
If you have any problems accessing your session, please let me know.
Regards,
Yanming

Hi Students,
Now that we have introduced the software (demo in the second lecture hour last Friday) and the basics of image processing in the spatial domain (last week and this morning), it is time for you to get some experience implementing image processing algorithms.
To this end, we have designed an assignment, which is worth 10% of your final mark for the course. The assignment specification and materials are now available under WebCMS3 > COMP9517 > Course Work > Assessments > Assignment. Deadline for submission is Week 4, Tuesday 21 June 2022, 18:00:00.
If you have any questions, you can post them in the Q&A forum in Ed, or ask your tutor in the consultation session this Friday. The course admin will provide further details on these sessions in the coming days.
Cheers,
Erik
Hi students, this week Dr Dong Gong will lecture the sequel of image processing (low-level computer vision), which we started last week. The slide handouts are now available under WebCMS3 > COMP9517 > Course Work > Lectures > Week 2.
Hi students, just a kind reminder to form project groups . No worries if you are not yet part of a group by the end of today. In that case, the course admin will automatically assign you to a group.
Each project group consists of five students. These groups will also be used to assign you to one of the consultation sessions . As mentioned in the first lecture and the Course Outline, the centrally scheduled Friday time slot (1-3 PM) will be used for a 1-hour lecture (1-2 PM) followed by a consultation session (2-3 PM) with tutors.
The consultation sessions are an opportunity to ask questions and get feedback on your work (the assignment and labs in weeks 2-5 and the group project in weeks 6-9). The idea is similar to the face-to-face lab sessions we had in the past: you could call one of the tutors to discuss your work one-to-one. If there was an issue that required discussion with the whole class, the tutors would call everybody's attention and give general instructions.
Similarly, with the online consultation sessions in Blackboard Collaborate, it is like everybody is in a lab room, you can ask a tutor to go into a breakout room to discuss your work without showing it to the others , and if it concerns broader issues, these can be discussed with the whole group and if needed they will also be announced here on WebCMS3.
Because of the large number of students in the course, to be able to give this level of personal feedback, we will split the consultations into eight parallel streams, with two tutors each. The course admin will assign your project group to one of the parallel consultation streams . To make sure the workload is and remains equally divided among the tutors, it will not be possible for you to join other streams, but everyone in your project group will be assigned to the same stream.
Because of their number and nature, similar to face-to-face labs, these parallel consultation sessions will not be recorded . Attending these sessions is not compulsory but an opportunity within a centrally scheduled course hour to get help if you have any questions or are stuck with any of the labs or the group project.
Hi Students, at the request of Professor Louise Lutze-Mann, Director of Education and Pro Vice-Chancellor Education & Student Experience Portfolio, I have uploaded a separate slide with information on support available for students at UNSW across a range of areas (health and wellbeing, academic and study skills, equitable learning and special consideration). You will find it under Course Work > Lectures > Week 1. Cheers, Erik
Dear students,
As you know, COMP9517 has a group project. A tutor will be assigned to mentor you for your labs and the group project, so you will have the opportunity to get to know that tutor throughout the term.
Please form your project groups this week, and we will create lab groups by combining project groups. There must be 5 students in each project group. If anyone has not been able to form a group by Monday 6 June, we will allocate you to a group.
We have set up a separate session Project Group Formation in the Q&A forum Ed . Here, you can post messages if you need other students in the course to join your group.
To register your project groups:
If you have any problems, please post on the Ed forum.
Regards.
The recordings of the Week 1 lectures have now all been uploaded to Echo360 (link available via Moodle or via WebCMS3 > Course Work > Lectures). Today's recordings are currently being processed by the system and should be viewable within the next few hours. All future lecture recordings will be available a couple of hours after the lecture has ended.
The slides of the Week 1 Tuesday and Friday lectures are now available under WebCMS3 > COMP9517 > Course Work > Lectures > Week 1.
Dear Students,
As explained in the Course Outline, the COMP9517 lectures will be livestreamed using BlackBoard Collaborate. Each lecture is a separate livestream and you will find the corresponding links in the Moodle page for this course (at present only the links for the first two weeks have been created, the rest will be added later).
Best regards,
Erik
Dear Students,
Throughout the term there will be various ways to ask questions and get answers:
1. During the livestream lectures, you can use the chat function to post questions about the presented materials at any time, and the lecturer will pause once in a while to answer them.
2. Every week (except the first week) in the second hour (2-3pm) of the Friday lecture time slot, you can consult with the tutors of your tutor group regarding the assignment, labs, and group project. In the first week, this time slot will be used to give a tutorial on the software tools we'll be using in the course, and you'll be able to ask questions about that during the session.
3. At any time, you can post questions in the Q&A forum. You will find the link to this forum in the main WebCMS3 panel. The platform we are using for this is called Ed. Please sign up and enroll as soon as possible using your UNSW email address to get access. The team will attempt to answer questions within 24 hours.
Best wishes,
Erik
