Hi everyone,
Thanks to all of you who have completed the myExperience survey so far. If you haven't yet participated, you can find the myExperience link on your Moodle course page or look for the link in your student email.
Tomorrow 1st May is the last day for filling out this survey. Your constructive feedback is valued, and helps not only students taking this course, but myself and teaching staff across UNSW to create positive changes in their courses moving forward.
On behalf of the entire COMP9517 team, and with special thanks to our two very hardworking course admins and 24 tutors, I would really appreciate your support.
Hi everyone,
The peer review for all groups is now open. This is for each member of the group to enter a participation percentage for all their own group members, including themselves. Please complete this activity by Tuesday, 29 April 2025, 6:00 PM.
To enter the peer-review, log in into Moodle and click on Review your project team contribution. Click 'Add submission' and submit an empty file. You will be taken to the review page, where you can select the percentages of all team member contributions, and optionally add comments (refer image below for the interface with a slider and comments section). Comments, if any, should include a statement about your own contribution and contributions of all other members. If applicable, please add links to any supporting evidence. Here are a few notes for the submission:
If you have any questions or there are any issues, please get in touch via email cs9517@cse.unsw.edu.au

Hi everyone,
For the video submission, please read the "Project Submission Instruction" below posted by Haonan three days ago. If you still encounter error after following the instruction, please indicate clearly in your Ed post or email that you've used give but still couldn't submit it. In that case, we'll need to ask for system support to resolve the issue.
Considering that there might be difficulties with the submission, we will not apply any late penalty if the project submission is within a one-day delay, meaning submission before 6pm 26 April . Hopefully this will avoid some tense moment and make everything more easily manageable.
However, please be mindful that avoid submitting it multiple times so that we can minimise the risk of overwhelming the system.
Hi everyone,
You should have received an email about exam allocations . Please read the email carefully, and the allocation is here: https://cgi.cse.unsw.edu.au/~exam/25T1/seating/register.cgi/allocations/ . Any questions or concerns please email cse.exams@unsw.edu.au.
I suppose the projects are almost done. We'll release the peer review form on Moodle this Friday morning, to be completed by Tuesday next week. A notice will be posted here when it's available. Please do utilise the form if you have any concerns about peer contributions within your groups.
We'll need about 3 weeks to finalise the project marking , because we need to make sure the marking is done consistently across all groups. So we need time to double check all marks. We'll also ensure the marks are adaptive to individual contributions based on the information entered in the peer review forms.
Finally, as usual, please do complete the myExperience survey. That will be very helpful for us.
And good luck with your final exam!
Hi everyone,
Please be reminded to submit only one copy of your project per team (one member of the team should submit the project on behalf of the group).
give cs9517 projectvideo file1 file2 file3 ...
command through the VLab terminal, as WebCMS may have difficulty handling large file uploads.
As we are currently working with limited disk storage, we kindly ask all teams to avoid uploading multiple submissions. This will help ensure smooth handling of all submitted files and avoid potential conflicts during the submission process.
Thank you for your cooperation.
If you have any questions or run into any issues, feel free to reach out via cs9517@cse.unsw.edu.au .
Kind regards,
Haonan
Hi everyone,
This is a reminder that this week, the Tuesday lecture will be dedicated to lecture revision. We’ll go through all the important slides from the past nine weeks, which will be very useful for studying for the final exam. You can attend the lecture or watch the recording afterwards.
The Wednesday lecture will be focused on answering questions about the project and the final exam. We’d prefer to do this in person, but if you post messages in the chat during the online stream, we’ll be able to see them and reply too.
Hi everyone,
We've updated the access permission for today's tutorial sessions; you can be able to access the tutorial session now.
Kind regards,
Haonan

Hi everyone,
As Fridays in Weeks 9 and 10 are public holidays, the Friday tutorial session links will be unavailable, they will be rescheduled to Wednesday 4-5pm, Thursday 4-5pm and Thursday 5-6pm. Students enrolled in the Friday 12:00–1:00 PM sessions (tute10–12 groups) are welcome to attend any of the available tutorial sessions during those two weeks, as all sessions will be open to you. However, we kindly ask that you attend your originally assigned session where possible to maintain a balanced distribution of students across sessions.
If you have any questions or there are any issues, please get in touch via email cs9517@cse.unsw.edu.au

Hi Everyone,
Welcome to Week 9.
The slides for this week have been uploaded. See you tomorrow!

Hi everyone,
Our final exam will be in CSE labs. My understanding is that May 7 should be the date, and there should be two sessions on that day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. You should be receiving emails next week about choosing one of the two sessions, and the selection will be first come first serve.
The exam itself is 2 hours plus 15 minutes setup time. I'll let you know if we receive any further information.
Hi Students,
There seems to be some confusion in some groups regarding who is assigned to which group.
As previously announced, please note that we will NOT be using the group function in WebCMS.
Instead please refer to the PDF under Assessments>Group Project> Project group assignments for the official allocation of students. This is how you will be marked so please strictly follow what this document indicates.
You can get in touch with other students via email by using the zID followed by @ad.unsw.edu.au
e.g. z0000000@ad.unsw.edu.au
Let us know ASAP if there are any issues or you do not understand which group you are in.
Andrew
Hi Everyone,
Welcome to Week 8.

Hi everyone,
We are just told that students might have received the provisional timetable of final exams, although they are not released to lecturers yet.
However, the School told us that the timetable is not correct and they are fixing the issue and will let everyone know as soon as it is fixed.

Hi everyone,
1) Sample exam questions and answers are now available under Assessments => Exam . You can use them as guidance for preparing for the final exam. Tuesday lectures in Week 10 will also be dedicated to reviewing lecture materials. Note that there are no additional requirements in this course like double pass or hurdle, etc.
2) Some additional information about the group project is uploaded under Lectures => Week 7 . We'll go through them during the second hour of the Wednesday lecture.
3) In Weeks 9 and 10, Fridays are public holidays, so we will need to move the Friday tutorials to the Wednesday and Thursday slots. Currently we have three Friday tutorial sessions, so we'll just move each of them to Wednesday 4-5pm, Thursday 4-5pm and Thursday 5-6pm. To avoid potential conflicts in your timetable, all tutorial sessions will be open to everyone during those two weeks, so that you can join any tutorial. However, please stick to your original tutorial group whenever possible to ensure a balanced number of students across sessions.
Hi Students,
Due to webcms allowing multiple groups with the same name to be formed, a number of groups were incorrectly created. We have reassigned a number of students to correct this error.
Please recheck your allocated groups in case and again let us know if there are any issues.
Apologies for the inconvenience
Andrew
Hi Students,
Project groups have been finalised and release under Assessments>Group Project>Project group assignments.
We will no longer be using the groups function in webcms. The groups in the PDF will be how we assess everyone, so please check and follow the official groupings. Those who formed groups in webcms should be paired together.
To keep the group project fair and minimise disruption, there will be no changing of groups. Please contact your fellow group members and work together to complete the project.
If there are any issues, please contact us ASAP.
Andrew

Hi everyone, we've just uploaded a file under Assessment => Lab 1 showing the sample answers, especially the parameter settings that are quite important to obtain the various outputs. It might be useful.
Hi everyone,
A few updates:
Marks for Lab 1 have been released. You can check via Give.
Submission link for Lab 3 is available now here under Assessments => Lab 3.
Specification for Lab 4 has been uploaded.
Specification for the group project has been uploaded under Assessments.
There's no tutorial in Week 6, so the tutorials this week will be a good opportunity to ask questions if you are unclear about the project requirement. Dr Hao Xue will talk about the project during the lectures this week as well.
In Week 7, 3-4pm Wednesday will be dedicated to the project, and both Hao and myself will be in the lecture room to talk about the project and provide consultations.
Also, Fridays in Weeks 9 and 10 are public holidays, so we'll have to move the Friday tutorials to other days, using the Wednesday or Thursday tutorial times. We'll confirm soon.
Hi Everyone,
Welcome to Week 5.
Lecture slides for this week have been uploaded.
Best,
Hao
Hi Everyone,
Lab2 submission issue is fixed now; please try to re-submit your lab2.
Haonan
Hi Everyone,
Some of you might have encountered an error trying to submit your labs. We are aware of the issue and working on fixing it. Please try again later. We will of course take into account the disruption and will not apply a late penalty for reasonable delay
Andrew
Hi Everyone,
Just a reminder to form your project groups by the end of next week (Friday). All groups need to be registered on WebCMS by using the 'Groups' function. The maximum number of students in one group is 5. If your group by the end of next week has less than 5 members, we will assign additional members to fill it up. Group members do not have to be in the same tute.
If you don't have a group by the deadline that is ok, we will assign you to a group after the deadline has passed.
Please form your groups now as we want this to be the best experience for you and there will not be an opportunity to change groups after the deadline.
If you have any questions let us know at cs9517@cse.unsw.edu.au
Thanks,
Andrew
Hi everyone,
Same as last week, the submission link for Lab 2 is now available here under Assessments => Lab 2.
Spec for Lab 3 has been released under Lab 3. Lecture slides for this week have been uploaded here as well.
For the group project , we will release the spec around mid next week. And a reminder that the project groups must be finalised by next week. If you have not joined a group of 5 by Friday next week, we'll assign you to a group and also fill any groups with less than 5 members.
Hi everyone,
The submission link for Lab 1 is now available here under Assessments => Lab 1.
Spec for Lab 2 has been released under Lab 2.
Lecture slides for this week have been uploaded here as well.
Dear Students,
Due to the large size of the course, unfortunately we are unable to accommodate all individual requests regarding which tute group students are placed in. Additionally, to maintain a balanced number of students per group, we have allocated students based on the selected tutorial time in myUNSW.
If your enrolled time does not match your allocation please get in touch letting us know the time you are supposed to be in, and evidence from myUNSW. Otherwise, we will not be able to swap your group.
If your group members are in different tute groups, that is totally fine, there is no need to swap groups.
Thank you for your understanding
Andrew
Hi everyone,
Please note that lecture slides for this week have been uploaded here.
The specification for Lab 1 is also available now under the "Assessments" tab. Submission is due Friday next week (7 March). Submission link will be posted here next week.
Tutorials start this week, so if you have questions regarding Lab 1, you can ask during the tutorial sessions this week and next week.
Do check if you can see your Blackboard Collaborate link in Moodle for the tutorial sessions. If you have enrolled in this course in the past few days, you might not have been allocated to a tutorial group. In that case, please email the class account (cs9517@cse.unsw.edu.au) specifying the tutorial session that you enrolled, so we can assign you to the correct group.
Hi Everyone,
Please find your tutorial groups in the list provided under the Tutorials heading.
There you should be able to find you zID along with the tutorial time and the tutors who will be taking the group.
You should also shortly see a link to join your tutorial each week in Moodle.
If you have any questions or there are any issues, please get in touch via email cs9517@cse.unsw.edu.au
Andrew
Hi everyone,
We'll have the first lecture tomorrow. Lecture slides will be uploaded here tomorrow morning.
Tutorials/labs will start next week. We'll let you know which tutorial group you are assigned to, either later this week or early next week. Each tutorial group will have a Blackboard Collaborate link in Moodle.
Before the labs start, there are some preparation steps to set up the Python programming environment as well as some OpenCV tutorials that you might want to try. Please refer to the " Lab Preparations " section under the "Assessments" here in WebCMS3. Questions related to these will be answered during the first tutorial session next week.
You can also start forming project groups. This is needed for the "Group Project" component (spec to be released in Week 5). Each project group should have 5 members. You can form groups in the " Groups " section of WebCMS3. Please note that forming groups is optional, students without a group will be assigned to one, and groups with less that 5 members will have additional members assigned to them. Also, students do not need to be in the same tutorial to join the same project group. Project groups should be finalised by Week 5.
And while lectures, labs, and projects can be conducted online, the final exam will be in-person in CSE labs. More details will be released later.
Dear Students,
Welcome to COMP9517 starting next week in T1. Please have a look at the Course Outline (available in ECOS via the menu on WebCMS3) for more details on what to expect and what's expected in this course.
We will use WebCMS3 as our main platform. Lecture slides, assignment specs, tutorial groups information, etc., will be through WebCMS3.
The lectures will be delivered both in-person on campus and online via the Live Streaming option in Echo360 . The links to lectures in Echo360 (both live streaming and recordings) can be accessed via Moodle .
Tutorials/Labs will be conducted online via Blackboard Collaborate , which will be accessible via Moodle.
For discussion forum, we will use Ed ((see the link in the menu on WebCMS3). The forum is monitored daily and we do our best to answer within 24 hours. For more individual questions, please email the class account: cs9517@cse.unsw.edu.au .
In the past few years we have broken the record in terms of student numbers every new term, which keeps challenging us. Clearly, interest in computer vision and its many applications is growing rapidly. Please bear with us as we do our best solving technical challenges in making the course an enjoyable experience for you.
On behalf of the entire COMP9517 25T1 Team, which includes Co-Lecturer Dr Hao Xue, Course Admins Andrew Gunawan and Haonan Zhong, and our 24 Tutors, I wish you a great time learning about Computer Vision!
