Hi everyone,
We're over halfway through the exam time now. I have no updates to give other than a reminder to make sure you save all your work before submitting it.
Rob
Hi everyone,
If you go to the Exam Information page on the course website there is a link that will let you access the exam paper. Please ensure you read and understand all exam rules .
Good luck!
Rob
Hi everyone,
Firstly, the project marks are now available via the course website. On the whole, you all did very well. I took a look at a lot of them and it's great to see how far you've all come given most of you didn't know how to program at the start of the course. It's also great to see the creativity in the projects you chose to do.
Secondly, as the exam is in 2 days, I suggest you all make sure you're prepared to sit it. By that I mean, you should decide what environment you're going to use (Colaboratory or Visual Studio Code) and that you have everything you need to use it. If you're using Visual Studio Code, make sure you've got everything installed you need. If you're using Colaboratory, make sure you will have internet access for the duration of the exam. If you're able to run all the cells in the solutions to the revision exercises, you should be ready to go.
There's a link on the Exam Information page that will go live at the start of the exam on Wednesday. I will also post a notice at the starting time. If there are any corrections that need to be made or other information that needs to be communicated, I will post another notice during the exam.
Rob
Hi everyone,
Just a quick announcement to let you know I've put up solutions to the exam revision exercises on the 'Exam Information' page. They are available as a separate file so you can still try the questions yourself spoiler-free. If you've not done so already, I strongly recommend giving the exercises a go yourself before looking at the solutions.

Hi everyone,
Unfortunately, the lecture recording system in the lecture theatre didn't record the in-person revision session on Tuesday. Fortunately, I did foresee this being a problem, so I did a backup recording on my laptop. I've put a link to this recording up on the course website, however, I will prewarn you that the audio quality is not very good. Tomorrow's lecture will also be revision focused, so you can use that as an opportunity to ask any revision/exam questions.
Rob
Hi everyone,
As discussed in the lectures this week, I'm going to hold another in-person revision session at the Tuesday lecture time next week. There will be no zoom lecture on that day, but the recording of the revision session will be posted shortly afterward. The Thursday lecture will be run via zoom as usual and also focus on revision, so everyone has a chance to ask any revision related questions they might have.
The in-person revision session will be held in
AGSM John B Reid Theatre (map reference G27, room G07)
. I look forward to seeing some of you there.
Rob
Hi everyone,
Just a quick note for all of you doing this course from overseas. Daylight savings ended in Australia over the weekend. You may need to adjust your calendars to account for the fact Australia is no longer on summer time. At the time of posting this notice, the lecture is due to start in 35 minutes.
Rob
Hi everyone,
Just to let you know, there is planned downtime for the servers that host the course website between 7PM tomorrow (Friday) and 8PM Saturday. During this period, you will not be able to access the course website itself, but Colaboratory will still be available. In case you haven't already got them, this is a link to the project proposal template, and this is a link to lab 5.
Rob
Hi everyone,
First of all, Musk or Bot is now available for everyone to take part in. Click here to give it a go . I would encourage everyone to do it a few times. The more data we get, the more we can do with it.
Secondly, as anyone in Sydney is aware, we're experiencing quite severe weather at the moment and it is predicted to last for the next few days. At the moment, the revision session on Tuesday is still going ahead , but make sure to keep an eye on your email, both from this course and the university generally. If the university starts advising people not to hold classes on campus then the revision session will be moved online. If I am given any such advice I will post a notice here.
Rob
Hi everyone,
I've just got confirmation of the room booking for our revision session next week.
The Revisions session will be at 1PM on Tuesday in AGSM G07 John B Reid Theatre
For those who don't know where that is (like me), it's at the very end of the campus near Botany St at map reference G27.
If you're not able to attend in-person, there will be a recording, but we won't going through any new material. I will mostly focus on going through the lab exercises from weeks 1-4 and answering any random questions people may have.
Rob
Hi everyone,
Firstly, for those who may not be caught up on lectures, the project spec has been released . It's available via the course website. While there is nothing due for it till week 7, we recommend, if you want to work with a partner, that you try to find one soon . If you're unsure how best to find a partner, contact your tutor. They can help connect you with other people also looking for partners.
Secondly, I've put detailed instructions up on the course website for how to install Python on your own computer. This is not something you need to do till you attempt the week 5 lab, but we recommend doing it sometime this coming week in case you have any problems . I expect for most of you it should be fairly straightforward, but there is always the possibility that something will go wrong. If you have any problems at all, I encourage you to post a comment on the page. You can also talk to your tutor about it during your lab. On the topic of the week 5 lab, because of flexibility week and the project, it won't be due till week 8 . The week 4 lab will be due in week 5 as normal. I'll talk about this more on Tuesday.
Rob
Hi everyone,
Welcome again to COMP1010! First of all, if you've not already filled out the survey from last week, please do so soon. It really helps us get a better idea of who you all are and what you want to get out of this course.

Secondly, for the first 2 or 3 weeks of the course, we'll be using Colaboratory as a teaching tool. It's a service provided by Google, so it does require a Google account to use. I imagine many of you will have Google accounts, but if you don't, or you'd rather not use your personal Google account for course work, you'll need to create one. It is free to do so, and you can use one of the email addresses UNSW provides you. If you go here to this Colaboratory notebook , you can check that it's all working for you.
Setting up your account is not something you need to do immediately, but you may wish to do it before the lecture on Tuesday and should try to do it before your first lab. If you run into a problem you can't resolve, don't worry. There will be the opportunity to ask questions during the first lecture, and you can get one-on-one help in your lab too.
If you are living somewhere where certain websites are restricted, it may be the case that you have issues accessing Colaboratory. I have been informed that Colaboratory is accessible from mainland China, but I cannot confirm that nor am I confident that all its features work. If that is the case for you, I have provided an alternative way to access the notebook from above. If you are unable to use Colaboratory and have to use this alternative, please email me at robertce@cse.unsw.edu.au . That's so that I know to keep on providing links to it and instructions for it.
I'll see you on Tuesday!
Rob
Hi everyone,
Welcome to The Art of Computing for term 1 2021! First of all, I'm posting this notice to introduce myself. I'm Rob, the lecturer for the course. I hope to meet you all over zoom next week.
If you're reading this in an email, you can access the class website by clicking here . You may wish to bookmark it. There's not much there now, but more will be added over this week, like links to zoom meetings for the classes.
The second reason I'm posting this notice is I don't know very much about you. This course attracts students from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Some of this is reflected in the information the university gives me, like what program you're enrolled in, but most of it I don't know, like why you're doing this course. Because of this, I would ask you all to complete a survey. It shouldn't take more than 5 minutes, but it will help me learn more about you and what you hope to get out of this course.
