  • Supplementary Exam and Second Attempt at hurdle

Posted by Sim Mautner Friday 20 May 2022, 11:31:43 AM.

    Hello everyone,

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to sort out all your marks.

Everyone who received a pass or above, well done.

For everyone else, I will be sending you through an e-mail by the end of today specifying if you have qualified for a second attempt at the hurdle (or not), and the specifics of that.

Both the Supplementary Exam and the Second Attempt to pass the course will be held on Thursday 26th May 2pm-5pm.

Please let me know asap if you are unable to do it at that time. (It is at the same time as the supplementary exam for this course, so I'm hoping you will be available.)

It is also up to you if you take this opportunity or not. It would be helpful for me if you let me know asap if you intend to take this opportunity or not.

    Regards,

    Sim.

  • Finalising of Grades - Let me know if anything's missing

Posted by Sim Mautner Friday 13 May 2022, 03:53:20 PM.

    Hello everyone,

As we finish up the term, I am doing my best to ensure that everyone's grades are in the grades system. Often though, despite all my best efforts, a couple fall through the gaps. It would help me if everyone could please check that all their grades (except for the final exam) are correct, and contact me if anything is missing or incorrect.

    Regards,
    Sim.

  • Late Exam Submissions

Posted by Sim Mautner Friday 13 May 2022, 09:30:27 AM.

I've received a couple messages from students who submitted 5 minutes late or less due to connection difficulties.

While I may be inclined to apply some penalty to students submitting after the deadline (in order to keep it fair to students who left more time to submit before the deadline), please be reassured that this penalty will not significantly affect your exam grade. At the moment I'm considering taking 1 or 2 marks off their total mark (out of 45) for students who submitted more than 1 minute late and less than 6 minutes late.

(I am open to hearing from students if there are any suggestions for a more fair approach to this situation.)

  • Practice Exam Feedback

Posted by Sim Mautner Tuesday 10 May 2022, 09:13:51 PM.

    Hi everyone,

I have now e-mailed personalised feedback to each student who submitted a practice exam before the deadline last week. If you were expecting feedback but haven't received any, please let me know and I'll double-check.

For those of you who received feedback, I hope it is useful to you and please excuse the brevity. (I had limited time to respond to each person.)

Good luck for the exam on Thursday.

    Cheers,

    Sim.

  • Update on Project Marking

Posted by Sim Mautner Thursday 05 May 2022, 09:24:10 AM.

    Hello everyone,

Due to unforeseen circumstances I have been later than I would have liked in getting your project implementation grades back to you.

For students who submitted on time (or within 72 hours of the deadline), and who demonstrated their project on the initially scheduled demonstration day, I've now entered your project grades into the system. They should show up within 24 hours of when you receive this e-mail.

I've also included a total lab mark in your grades. (These will also show up within 24 hours of receiving this e-mail.) I ended up not including Web Apps question 4 in the calculation as some students suffered from the API we were using being unavailable. The calculation is done by adding up all your lab marks, dividing by the total (24) and multiplying by 20 (the grade which the lab marks are out of).

I will keep working to release the last of the project marks as well as your feeback marks as soon as possible. If you have any questions about your grades and/or would like more feedback on how your grade was reached, please e-mail me or ask privately on the forum.

    Cheers,

    Sim.

  • Catch-up Demonstrations and Feedback Task

Posted by Sim Mautner Monday 25 April 2022, 10:53:16 AM.

Any students who had technology problems or simply failed to show up during demonstrations last Friday are invited to catch up this task between 9:30am and 11:30am on this Thursday 28th April. This applies also to students who had a group member show up, but did not show up themselves.

If you would like to take me up on this opportunity, you must e-mail me at cs1010@cse.unsw.edu.au to confirm that you will attend.

    Regards,

    Sim.

  • Demonstrations Tomorrow

Posted by Sim Mautner Thursday 21 April 2022, 05:25:47 PM.

Reminder: Project Implementations are due tonight.

Times have been finalised for the demonstrations and can be found here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1LrDjw6qjxc...

It is your responsibility to show up at the correct time (for the full hour).

Zoom links will be posted on the page above (with the demonstration times), before 9am tomorrow morning.

Familiarise yourself with what we are looking for in the Feedback Task .

See you tomorrow - I'm looking forward to seeing what you've all created. :)

  • Project Demonstration Times

Posted by Sim Mautner Monday 18 April 2022, 09:23:35 AM.

    Hi everyone,

According to my records there are currently 66 students enrolled in this course.

I have received requests from 39 students for a demonstration time.

You can check if you have received a demonstration time by looking at this page . If you don't appear on that page, please fill out this form by the evening of Tuesday 19th April.

It is easier for me, and I believe for you as well, if you submit your preference for when you want to demonstrate your project, rather than having me allocate students randomly. So please do this.

I hope you're having an enjoyable weekend.

    Cheers,

    Sim.

  • Reminder: No lecture tomorrow

    Hi everyone,

In today's lecture I forgot that there's no lecture tomorrow.

I'll let you know when I know my availability for consultations over the long weekend.

    Cheers,

    Sim.

  • Week 8 Announcements

Posted by Sim Mautner Sunday 03 April 2022, 08:27:40 PM.

    Hi everyone,

    This announcement covers 4 topics:

    1. Choosing topics for the rest of the term
    2. There is no lecture on Wednesday of Week 9 (13th April) - let me know when you'd like it rescheduled to
    3. How to make consultation times with me
    4. When you will get your proposal grades

Topics for the Rest of Term

It's the start of week 8 which means we have only 3 more weeks of term. In our classes, we have almost finished what I consider to be the core content of this course. Beyond this, I want to focus on what students would find most relevant, interesting and/or useful.

Here are some of my ideas:

    • Is there a feature you're struggling to implement in your assignment? Something which would add value to your assignment? Starting now, I'm taking requests for things which you'd like to learn which can relate directly to your assignment. I'll teach them in weeks 8 and 9 and make those skills available to all the students.
    • We could work on one of the applications we have started, but left TODOs in. One example is we could make big improvements to our "Chat Bot" program, and learn a lot about data structures and programming along the way.
    • Do more programming questions to prepare for the exam. (I intend to do this in week 10 anyway, but if you'd like more of it, earlier, then that's an option.)
    • Take a look at an extra, optional topic such as:
      • Exceptions (what causes all those red lines when an assert fails or our program crashes). Where do they come from? How do they work? How can we make the best use of them? Can we make some ourselves?
      • Databases. Are there better ways of storing data in our Python applications and on the server? Could we just read/change the pieces of data which we are interested in, rather than reading in a whole file (like in csv and json formats) and searching through it line by line?
      • PyGame. How are games such as Flappy Bird implemented in Python? Can we implement games like these ourselves?
      • How is Python useful in everyday life? How might someone who is not a software engineer or computer scientist, use Python to make their life easier? I can show you some of the short Python programs I use as a university lecturer.

Please let me know your preferences by posting them on this thread on the forum (anonymously if you'd like). You may also comment on existing comments to add a vote to any existing requests.

No Lecture on Wednesday of Week 9 - when would you like it instead?

On Wednesday of week 9 I am unavailable during our usual lecture time. My preference would be to do the lecture at another time and record it so that students can watch it at their convenience. Alternatively, I could post some pre-recorded lectures. If you'd like me to do a lecture like I normally do, but at a different time, please indicate your preference(s) here . (Sorry there are so few options.)

    Consultations

I am available for consultations throughout the week at varying times. Please e-mail me or post on the forums if you'd like to make a time. Include which days/times are best for you. (cs1010@cse.unsw.edu.au)

    Proposal Grades

In case anyone is wondering, I plan to get your proposal grades to you by Tuesday of Week 9. Ideally, even sooner.

  • Tutorial and Lab 1 Released

Posted by Sim Mautner Tuesday 15 February 2022, 05:15:10 PM.

I've now released the lecture slides for tomorrow as well as the tutorial and lab content.

I find it helpful in learning to read through all the material before coming to class.

Tutorial content your tutor will demonstrate for you (but it's great learning experience to attempt them on your own first).

Labs you are expected to complete on your own as much as possible. (Ask you tutor for help during your lab time if needed.)

Week 1's lab is due, at the latest, in your lab class in week 2.
