An enhanced list of requirements for project presentations, demos and reports has been compiled and released at https://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~cs4601/20T1/protected/proj-reports.html#W11 . The page was updated on 22 Apr @16:40; please refresh the page if you do not see this date recorded at the top of the page. Please read the requirements carefully and contact Oliver if you have any questions.
Also, please send me your seminar evaluations if you have not done so already.
The lab books and project plans have now been marked - you should be able to see these by clicking on the small bar chart icon bottom-left of the course web page.
Also, I should mention that consistent with other project courses in the faculty, COMP4601 will continue to be graded with an actual mark.
Finally, please forward your seminar evaluations as soon as you can after the seminar has been concluded.
Seminars start tomorrow at 3:00pm - please join the Team meeting for live streaming of the first two topics. Please read the instructions on the Seminars page of the course website . Executive summaries for tomorrow's seminars are overdue - please email these to me ASAP. Email a draft of your slides by midday tomorrow and a final version after your seminar tomorrow afternoon. I will post these on the Seminars page. Please note that students who are not presenting are expected to participate in the discussion of the seminar (use of the chat function in Teams for recording questions during the presentations is encouraged). These students are also expected to complete one Seminar Evaluation form [ PDF | Word ] for each topic presented. These should be emailed to me after tomorrow's presentations.
Thanks again for all your hard work in preparing and presenting your Project Plans. Thanks also for posting these to the wiki. I will take a look at these before finalising the Project Plan marks. As foreshadowed, I don't think it is worthwhile asking you to prepare an update for next Friday. Instead, I will award the marks that were intended for the update to the project plans as well. Please don't work on an update for this Friday, but work on your projects instead. Tony and I will be available for consultation from 9-12 on Friday.
I have read about half of your lab reports and intend finishing their marking this week as well.
The Engineering Faculty is proposing moving all courses (apart from project/thesis courses) to SY/FL by default this term. If we adopted this proposal for COMP4601, this would mean it would not be counted in WAM calculations, but anxiety about marks would be aleviated. Do you think we should rather stick with a grade for COMP4601?
Would you please respond to the poll in Teams before 4pm on 26 March? Thanks!
In case I have not been clear, please vote that you STRONGLY DISAGREE if you would like to move to SY/FL in COMP4601.
Thanks to everyone who voted... the results are in and can be viewed in the general chat on Teams.
This morning we had our first virtual COMP4601 lab session. Joanne, Puneeth, Edward, Renhao and Nathan joined Tony and me for a discussion and Q&A session on Teams that went quite well. I guess most of the rest of you were sleeping off the effort to lodge your Project Plans? I will read these over the coming week. (Along with finishing off the marking of your lab diaries!)
Some of you will have already noticed that I have created COMP4601 Microsoft Team "channels" for you to discuss your projects and seminars in private, and that Tony and I have both created future meetings for lab sessions, project and seminar presentations. Please familiarise yourself with Teams if you have not yet used it and please let me know if you are not able to join future meetings for some reason. I'm expecting everyone to participate.
One of the outcomes of this morning's discussion was that I have decided to hold a live Project Plan presentation session next Friday 27 March, meeting in Teams at 9:00 am for a 9:30 am start . This is instead of getting you to create a recorded presentation. I hope this approach will simplify things a little. Next Friday will also serve as a good practice run for the first Seminar session that is scheduled for 3:00 pm on Monday 30 March . For both the Project Plan and Seminar presentations, I think sharing a Google doc or a PDF or a PowerPoint presentation and handing off from speaker to speaker is easier than creating a recording. Please practice these skills though before next Friday! We will also trial online discussion of the presentations to assess the viability of doing so for the seminars.
There are probably numerous other things to discuss, like installing the Microsoft Teams app to have the best possible experience, but I'm going to stop here. Stay safe, and I look forward to meeting you all next Monday at 3:00 pm in Teams.
Hi all. I guess with all the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 you may be wondering how things are going to go forwards with COMP4601 given it is a very group-oriented course involving team-based projects and joint seminar preparation and presentation?
I have just commenced a forum-based discussion of these questions at the bottom of the Course Outline page on this website. Please let me know if you are not notified about new contributions to the discussion.
Note that you may need to SUBSCRIBE to the forum thread to receive notifications about it.
Please respond to forum entries at the foot of the Course Outline page
Lab diaries are due tomorrow at 9am. I will collect physical diaries at the lab. If you have an electronic diary, please email a PDF copy named lablog-<Your-surname>.pdf e.g. lablog-Diessel.pdf, to odiessel@unsw.edu.au by 9am tomorrow.
Thanks
Please note that you are expected to complete all lab work by 9am on Friday, 13 March and have your lab diary ready for collection at that time.
Your diary should include answers to the extended exercises for Labs 1, 2 and 6, as well as exercises 6.a - 6.c of the Custom IP lab.
Remember to head to the STRINGS lab next Monday at 3pm - next week's lab sessions will allow you time to work on your projects and develop the plan for presentation on Friday, 20 March (Week 5).
I have added a copy of The Zynq Book , an ebook with lots of useful resources and information on the Xilinx Zynq device, to the Course Resources on the 4601 website.
Hi all,
If you and your group have not yet notified me of your plans to team up, would you please email me the list of your group members please and the top three preferences you have for a project topic?
Thanks,
Oliver
The Doodle Poll for registering your interest in a preferred topic is now open.
You may need to view the Seminars page in its own browser window to access the poll.
It's taken me much longer than hoped to put in place the framework for this year's offering of COMP4601, but I think I now have something to show you. The web is live! You should be able to access the COMP4601 course website via WebCMS or the URL https://webcms3.cse.unsw.edu.au/COMP4601/20T1/
Please read the Course Outline and have a browse of the resources that have been provided under the Course Work menu. I hope you find the COMP4601 Wiki particularly helpful.
I shall see most of you next Monday at 3pm and I hope those of you arriving a little later are able to access the resources on the website. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.
