  • Addressing Feedback + Feedback call + Thanks for the term

Posted by Hayden 🎉 Sunday 19 December 2021, 05:35:15 PM.

Want to share more of your thoughts on COMP6080? Join an unofficial feedback conversation tomorrow (Monday 20th December) from 5:00pm-5:30pm to share some of your thoughts on COMP6080 if you wanted to elaborate more. You can join the call here .

    Hi everyone,

This will be the last notice for COMP6080 in 21T3! Results were released during the middle of last week, and overall you did very well! More than 50% of students scored a distinction or high distinction in the course which I think speaks to the general quality of your knowledge and work ethic.

Some of you might know that this was only the third time that COMP6080 has ever run. The course was created only 16 months ago, so it's still a very young course. Since it's inception there have been things that we've wanted to change. Some we changed very quickly, and other things we wanted to leave alone and wait a couple more terms just to ensure we weren't being too reactive. The end of this third offering is the first time since it's inception that I'll be heavily investing into some changes - and your feedback is instrumental in that. So I just want to say thank you again :)

In terms of your feedback from MyExperience , I've collated it all and want to address 95% of it so that you're in the loop with how these things are received and what next steps we may take. Feedback is paraphrased.

    Things I'm committed to fixing

    • "More resources for testing":
      • Yes, I agree, we need to resource testing better - in particular UI testing
    • "More resources for accessibility":
      • I think accessibility is resourced OK enough, but I think providing more direction and structure on how to execute it would be very useful
    • "Big gap between tutorials and assessments"
      • Yeah, I think this is fair. We're going to try and investing into both more tutorial questions and also some more complex ones. Hard to give specifics but tutorials and exercises will be an investment for next year.
    • "[insert problem with] Canva lectures"
      • We've had this feedback for a while, but I wanted to camp on it to take the time to learn more and reflect.
      • It's not anyone's fault, it's just an inherently difficult problem to solve to have an external party teach core content in a dynamic course.
      • It's clear to me that whilst having guest lectures from industry is absolutely awesome, the thesis that has broken down is the idea that they can be used substantively as part of the core teaching narrative. When the course was started the intention was for industry to do 75% of the core lectures but I toned that back to 50% out of fear it was too much. It's clear now that 50% is probably also too much.
      • One of the main things I'm looking to invest in over the summer is trying to keep the same amount of industry lectures but treat them as "extra" stuff on the side of having more of the core content in house (by me). This isn't because I think I'm great at it, but it's becoming clearer that whoever runs the course (which is me currently) should have a firmer control over that narrative.

Things I'm comfortable addressing, but are more complex so we need to get into details

These are points that I think require some more unpacking and would love to discuss more with any students. This is the kind of thing you can join a call for tomorrow if you'd like to discuss more too! Your personal experiences always help inform the right direction.

    • "Assignments are too demanding"
      • This one is also complicated to unpack. A course can't be too demanding in a vacuum, but it can be broadened to say "too demanding to pass" or "too demanding to get an HD" etc. Now that your marks are back, especially given the number of high marks, it would be great to maybe hear from some of you again to see if that helped alleviate issues or if there are still lingering concerns.
      • I also won't get into it too much as part of this is likely to be "symptomatic". What I mean by that is if there are particularly aspects of assignments that are annoying, or that there is limited resources, or that lectures are confusing, it's going to inherently make assessments harder as a downstream problem. However, let's still address it!
      • There are two important things about COMP6080 that need to be taken into account:
        • It is a level 6 course, and generally a challenging one at that
        • The assignments are worth 75%, which is quite a lot for term assessments.. My philosophy has been to keep the exam small, because it feels a bit mean to judge you harsher over a 3 hour window just to make some assignments less work (where you have time and flexibility)
      • What I'd love to hone in on is anyone's personal experiences about what specifically they found too demanding. Where were the sink holes of time? A lot of answers may fall into the next feedback item below, too. So please join the call tomorrow or reach out via email to share any thoughts and get into detail with me if you're interested!
      • Regardless of what people share, we'll be looking at this both qualitatively and quantitatively to make sure the course is reasonable and also that it's clearer in the course outline what the expectations are for students going in.
    • "Ass1 / Ass2 are too tedious"
      • Where frontend differs from most of the programming you'll do elsewhere is that frontend is often a bit of a "breadth" topic. It requires you to tackle a broad array of relatively simple pieces of work and make them fit together. You're nearly never going to be solving deep algorithmic or intellectually challenging isolated problems, but rather playing this game of trying to fit cogs together the right way. This is compounded by the fact that frontend is also heavily focused on a lot of little pieces of precision, which when stacked up can feel tedious.
      • So what I would say is that when students give feedback about things tedious, your experiences are usually broken up into two categories of a varying amount:
        • 1) That feeling of tediousness is actually just some of the challenges inherent to the problems you're solving and skills you're acquiring
        • 2) That feeling of tediousness comes from unnecessary tedium in assessments that can be improved
      • Because of this, I'd like to hear from anyone (who cares enough) specifically what things felt tedious. What part of the assignments? What specific criteria? There is genuine improvement I can make on these things but it just helps to learn more specifics from people's experiences.
      • Regardless of what people share, we'll as always review the assessment to look at any areas we feel may be redundant in terms of learning outcomes.

Things I am curious to learn more about

These are things that students have said that I don't fully understand. Because feedback is anonymous it's hard to know what to do without learning more. Feel free to email me anytime. Some of these are slightly paraphrased.

    • "More clear requirements in the assignment before hand it out"
    • "Ass1 marking was unclear"
    • "Tutor said not to care about marks in assignment one"

Things that we probably won't do anything with at this time

    • "Teach or allow VueJS":
      • I understand where you're coming from
      • VueJS is way too much to teach on top of what we already teach
      • We wouldn't teach it in place of React as the policy for 6080 was to teach the most popular framework (thus making it arguably the most useful)
      • We also don't want to allow students to program in it, because assignment 3 and the exam are marked by tutors who are all proficient with one framework but maybe not all others
    • "Teach backend too"
      • I'd love to do this, we just don't have meaningful time for it right now. If that changes in future we'll add it in.
      • Thankfully understanding NodeJS + Backends is very easy to do after the course if you already understand the Javascript language
    • "More help sessions needed"
      • This one is challenging. I'm pretty sure I've managed to score one of the highest volumes of help sessions in a level 6 course in CSE. We're very lucky in 6080 and it would be hard to push that much further, but we all want the same thing which is as much support as possible.

Hope that was helpful to learn more about! A reminder again you can come say hi and share some more thoughts tomorrow afternoon (5:00pm-5:30pm) via this call .

Thanks again for the great term. I hope I see many of you around various places over the next years!!

  • Assignment 3 Marks Released

Posted by Hayden 🎉 Sunday 12 December 2021, 10:18:20 PM.

    Assignment 3

Your assignment 3 marks have been released. You will be able to view them in the grades section. Your mark comes in a total ass3 (/100) and also shows the breakdown of marks for each milestone along with mobile, ui/ux, code style etc. Any bonus marks are being collected separately and will be integrated into your final mark.

There will also be comments your tutor has left for respective components of the marks to provide high level comments to explain your mark.

If you see that there has been any errors in your mark (e.g. extension not taken into account, mark of 0), etc, please email the tutor who marked you no later than 11pm on Tuesday the 14th of December. We will be unable to process any reviews after that date!

    Exam

Your exam mark won't be released on Webcms3, but you can calculate it easily once you get your final mark (later this week) by finding the difference with your assignment marks. Exam marks were scaled up, particularly at the lower end!

    Thank you

It's been an incredible term, and I've had such a privilege to get to know a number of you (even if loosely). Thanks for always being such a great bunch of students and making it a great time for all! If you want to stay in touch add me on LinkedIn (especially add me if you're interested in applying for work at the company I run) :)

Please always look out for each other, the world can be a hard place for many.

Hoping to see you all around at one point or another in life!

  • Congrats for yesterday!

Posted by Hayden 🎉 Wednesday 08 December 2021, 09:05:15 AM.

    Hi everyone :)

Congrats on making it through your exam yesterday. A lot of great work was done.

We have quite a lot of marking to do at the moment. Your assignment 3 marking + exam marking needs to be wrapped up within the next 5 days, so please wish your tutors luck as they try and get through it all.

I know there are dozens of students who maybe forgot to push a last commit, or had a tiny bug. For fairness in these exams we have to mark what you submitted. But please take comfort in that there are many many students who made little mistakes. Making mistakes in a time-constrained assessment is largely inevitable. So don't beat yourself up, many are in the same boat.

I'll hopefully be contacting you on Monday morning with an update about assignment 3! When you do get your marks back, if you feel there has been an error with the mark it's imperative you reach out within 24 hours.

I hope many of you have finished exams - so enjoy the rest of your week! We'll chat soon. I'll say a big thank you with the last notice but in the meantime just wanted to say thanks for being such an awesome group of students.

  • Exam on Tuesday

Posted by Hayden 🎉 Sunday 05 December 2021, 08:59:20 AM.

    Hi everyone!

Your exam is coming up on Tuesday afternoon. Any information about the exam has been covered either in the exam lecture or is listed on the Webcms3 exam page .

Expect to receive an email from me by 2pm on Tuesday outlining information about starting the exam including the exam spec. The email will be sent to your student email as well as posted as a pinned post on the ed forum. I have just sent a test email to you this morning that you should have received - this is the email address we will email exam info on to you throughout the exam.

I have also just pushed out your personal exam repos to gitlab (this is not the exam spec, that's a different repo). This is the EXACT personal repository you will be doing your work in during the exam. It's literally just an empty create-react-app with react-router-dom added to it. I would recommend you clone this repo and do a "yarn install" before the exam.

On the topic of assignment 3, due to high marking load in the middle of exam period sadly these marks won't be released before your final exam.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, and good luck on Tuesday! The term is nearly over :)

  • Last chance for MyExperience

Posted by Hayden 🎉 Tuesday 23 November 2021, 08:00:47 PM.

    Hi everyone,

Last reminder to fill out MyExperience :) It closes in about 48 hours and we still have less than 1 in 4 students having completed it! Please do your best to have a go at filling it in . We love to hear about how you found the course.

    Have a good week!!

  • 🌷 End of week 10 updates, MyExperience

Posted by Hayden 🎉 Sunday 21 November 2021, 11:56:06 AM.

    Hi everyone!

Did you know that 4 in 5 students in COMP6080 have yet to complete MyExperience? It would be really amazing if you took the time to fill it in . Both myself, CSE, and the university really appreciate the feedback and understanding how a course is going. Personally, I love the opportunity to hear how you found the course - it's all very useful! It only takes a few minutes, and the comments are largely optional too. It closes really soon to.

    Complete MyExperience now !

Beyond that, I don't have any major updates for week 10. We're going to start marking your third assignment next week and I'll be sending a reminder about your exam in a couple of weeks.

I hope you're all chugging along well, and congratulations to nearly everyone for having completed 75% of the course already. We're nearly there! Really proud of everyone for having made it through so far, particularly given the fatigue that comes with the third term.

    Have a great Sunday :D

  • 🙉 End of week 9 updates

Posted by Hayden 🎉 Saturday 13 November 2021, 05:59:05 PM, last modified Saturday 13 November 2021, 06:02:52 PM.

    Hi everyone!

Our final week is upon us next week. I hope you're all tracking OK for assignment 3. We'll be here to support you. It's once again really incredible seeing how fast you've all learned and progressed your work.

    Some updates below!

    MyExperience

Filling out MyExperience is one of the most helpful things you can do for the teaching team here in COMP6080. It would really mean a lot if you could just take 5 minutes to fill it in. The information is extremely useful for us in understanding how we're doing and where we need to focus attention.

Click here to fill it in!

    Exam & Sample Exam Info

Information about your final exam for COMP6080 can be found here . This page also includes links to a sample exam

    Assignment 2 bonus mark clarification

If you received bonus marks for assignment 2 you may have noticed it was not included in your final assignment 2 mark. This was by design, as we will include it in your overall marks at the end of term :)

Last note: My tutorial is being moved for week 10 to 4-5pm on Thursday.

Have a great weekend - we're nearly there! Keep it up.

  • 🦄 End of week 8 updates

Posted by Hayden 🎉 Saturday 06 November 2021, 12:10:56 AM.

    Hi everyone!

I hope you've had a great week :) Once again we don't have that many updates for you this week.

    Some key items:

    • Reminder that your assignment 3 is due on the Friday of week 10 (2 weeks away)
    • Your assignment 2 marks will be released on Monday with information below
    • Remember that if you're feeling stuck on starting your ReactJS assignment 3 you can check out the live lecture(s) from weeks 7 & 8 - we spend a lot of time getting hands on in those.

    Assignment 2 marks

Your assignment 2 marks will be released on Monday at 10pm (week 9) . You will be able to view them in the grades section. Your mark comes in a total ass2 (/100) and also shows the breakdown of marks for each milestone along with mobile, ui/ux, code style etc.

There will also be comments your tutor has left for respective components of the marks to provide high level comments to explain your mark.

If, on Monday, you see that there has been any errors in your mark (e.g. extension not taken into account, mark of 0), etc, please email me cs6080@cse.unsw.edu.au.

Other than that, I hope you all have an excellent weekend and look after yourselves. In 2 weeks we'll be 75% through the assessment and getting ready to take a break! So keep going strong.

  • Gitlab down 11am-5pm

Posted by Hayden 🎉 Wednesday 03 November 2021, 09:18:20 AM.

    Hi everyone,

The school of computer science will be taking Gitlab offline from 11am-5pm today for some relatively urgent security upgrades. Sometimes these things take a bit longer or done a bit quicker than expected, so check back this afternoon.

This affects all courses in CSE that use gitlab, so we appreciate your patience!

    Thanks

  • 🌻 End of week 7 updates

Posted by Hayden 🎉 Saturday 30 October 2021, 12:11:09 AM.

    Hi everyone,

Not many updates this week! Just sending this notice to keep things consistent.

Our intention is to make assignment 2 marks available to you at the start of week 9. I'll update you if that changes - tutors are working very hard!

The week 7 lecture covered a lot of tying ReactJS concepts together. Afterward we discussed assignment 3 briefly.

In week 8, our lecture will focus on a more hands on guide to starting assignment 3.

Keep up the hard work - it has been awesome seeing some of the great work produced for assignment 2. It's wonderful watching how fast you all learn.

    Have a great weekend :)

  • ❄️ End of week 6 updates

Posted by Hayden 🎉 Friday 22 October 2021, 11:40:04 PM.

    Hi everyone!

I hope you've had an OK flex week. No doubt many of you are still working hard.

    Assignment 2

Don't forget that assignment 2 is due on Monday 25th October (week 7) at 8pm!

Please remember that you need to:

    • Ensure your master branch on gitlab has your most up to date code on it, then
    • Submit via the "6080 submit ass2" command to confirm your submission

Remember that nearly all students won't complete everything - so balance your ambitions whilst also not putting unrealistic expectations on yourself. I believe in you!

    Assignment 3

Assignment 3 has been released. It's due in 4 weeks.

Because some of you are working solo and others are working in pairs, I've basically set up "groups" for this assignment. Some groups have 1 person in it (solo) and some groups have 2 people in it (pair).

A list of all student's (by zid) and your groups can be found HERE .

For those of you who requested to be in a pair with a stranger, I've allocated you a stranger :) You can email them with their zID.

Because of this it's difficult to automatically link you to your repo, though if you go to the homepage of gitlab you should see a repo there you have access to.

    Informal Hangout

I've been running a monthly informal hangout where I invite students in courses I teach to come and hangout to chat for an hour on the last Thursday of every month. It's just a zoom call with no agenda other than to breakup the monotony people have felt during COVID.

The next one is 8pm-9pm on Thursday the 28th October.

    Zoom link: https://unsw.zoom.us/j/89858064658

If you want to come say hi, ask me any questions, have me ask you questions, talk about CSE, degrees, or really anything random. Anyone is welcome, including people who aren't doing this course.

Last time we had about 30~ people there, a bunch of which were chatty and others just wanted to hang out quietly and listen in :)

Don't forget to go outside for a few minutes a day.

See you on Wednesday! In week 7 we'll be doing something similar to week 3 where we build a little web page together - except this time it will be with ReactJS instead of vanilla JS.

  • Assignment 1 Marks Released

Posted by Hayden 🎉 Monday 18 October 2021, 11:40:42 PM.

    Hi everyone,

Your assignment 1 marks have been released. Click here to view them in your grades section. Your mark comes in a total ass1 (/100) and also shows the 4 questions broken up into marks out of 25.

There should also be 4 "grades" that are comments your tutor has left for respective questions to provide high level comments in relation to the mark you were awarded.

Congratulations to everyone! I had a look at a number of random assignment submissions and it's incredible to see the work you all produced within a few weeks of starting the course. And if you didn't do so well, just remember that assignment 1 is only 15%. it was made lighter to take the stress off the first assignment.

If there has been any errors in your marks (e.g. extension not taken into account, mark of 0, etc, please email me cs6080@cse.unsw.edu.au).

Enjoy the rest of your flex week!! :)

  • 🎩 End of week 5 updates

Posted by Hayden 🎉 Saturday 16 October 2021, 12:11:50 AM.

Most important: For assignment 3, you can work as a pair (there is slightly more work) - either someone you find or we can find one for you. If you do want to work as a pair, you HAVE to preference that pair no later than Friday the 22nd of October @ 12pm via this URL . See below for more info.

    Hi everyone!

Flex week is upon us next week. I know you have a big assignment due shortly after, but I hope you can at least use the time to enjoy the lack of class and focus in on some deeper work or a few moments of taking a breath.

Help sessions continue to run in week 6, and we'll continue to have support on the forums. So we'll be here, don't worry!

Jamie Domingo (teaching staff) has produced a useful 30 minute lecture that we've thought would be really useful to give you some practical tips on how to improve your UI & UX in your applications. It's a great supplement to other lectures, and you can find it on the lectures page .

If you need help with assignment 2, remember that the week 4 & 5 live lecture were completely devoted to practical tips to get into it!

Please read - assignment 3 release & pairs

For assignment 3, you have the option to work alone or to work in a pair. If you work in a pair, you'll have to do a little bit more work (it will be described in the spec).

Due date : 63% of voters said that they want assignment 3 to be due on Friday of week 10 (19th Nov). So that's when it shall be!

Release date : We'll be pushing you a copy of assignment 3 to your repository (for you to work on) on Friday the 22nd of October in the evening (4 weeks before it's due). I'll update you about this in next week's notice.

Pair/solo preferences : If you want to work as a pair for assignment 3, you need to fill in this preference form no later than 12pm on Friday the 22nd of October . We won't accept late submissions. You can fill in the form even if you don't have someone to pair with (we will find them for you!). If you want to work solo, we don't mind whether you fill in the form or not.

If you're wondering "gosh, how much extra work for pairs?? I need that info to decide" I've released a draft master copy of the specification you can read here . It's subject to change, but the workload difference is ballpark within 20%, and will give you a sense of what it's about so you can decide if you want to work alone or in pairs. The main challenge with the pair isn't actually so much that there is a tonne more work, the bigger challenge is that we expect to see even contributes to git so you're actually required to focus on distributing work and coordinating that (typically far less flexible working environment).

I don't normally like putting small "todos" (even just a 5 minute form) in flex week - but - I can't deploy your repos until I confirm groups, and I figure you'd rather have the assignment for 4 weeks instead of 3!

See you in week 7! :)

  • 🌷 End of week 4 updates

Posted by Hayden 🎉 Sunday 10 October 2021, 06:19:57 PM.

    Hi everyone!

I hope you've had a good week :) Congrats again on getting your assignment 1 submitted earlier this week. Just a few key updates for you:

    Assignment 2

Don't forget that assignment 2 is due in 15 days (Monday of week 7). I think it's amazing seeing so many people get started and get stuck into things - it will make your live(s) much easier.

Please don't forget to use the 6080 submit ass2 command to submit this one - we will be less lenient this time!

    Week 5 lecture

The week 5 lecture is meant to be an "assignment 2 help lecture". I'm crowdsourcing the conversation we want to have on Wednesday, so checkout this thread on the forum to contribute . Happy to make this go in the direction that is most useful.

Poll for assignment 3 due date

We have some options about when the assignment 3 due date will be. The later it's due, the less likely you'll get the marks back before the final exam. Please fill in this poll sometime before Thursday evening if you want your opinion counted .

    See you on Wednesday!!!

  • CSESoc Community Discord - passing on a message

Posted by Hayden 🎉 Tuesday 28 September 2021, 01:11:33 AM.

The following message is from the Computer Science and Engineering society (CSESoc)

CSESoc has a community Discord server with almost 3000 verified members! It's a space for students currently studying or interested in CSE to interact socially and academically despite the difficulties of lockdown. We also have unofficial course chats for most CSE courses so students can meet new people, stay in touch, and discuss with peers!

Some other things we do on the server include:
    - Run game nights every 8pm on Fridays.
    - Post job opportunities.
    - Announce social/career/technical events.
    - Give access to our Minecraft server.

Students can join via http://cseso.cc/discord then verify themselves using their zID.

    Hi everyone!

Congratulations for getting through the second week :D There are very few updates this week.

    • Submission instructions for assignment 1 have been updated late last weekend and these updates have been pushed to your repo. It basically says you need to do an extra "submit" step on a CSE terminal rather than us just pulling from your master branch.
    • Tutorial 2 & Exercise 2 solutions have been released.
    • Assignment 2 will be released on Wednesday week 3 @ 6pm (for the start of the lecture)

In week 3 our lecture will focus on building a simple classic webpage with HTML + CSS + Javascript as a demo. Make sure you watch the pre-recordings before the lecture :)

Have a great weekend and I'll see you next week!

A recap of week 1 for you :

    • The live and pre-recorded lectures can be found on the lectures page . Make sure you watch at least week 1's lectures
    • The tutorial and exercises for week 1 are found here . If you missed your tutorial in week 1, we recorded one for you .
    • Assignment 1 was released, and you can find it here . I would recommend trying to finish this by the Monday of week 3 - so start this weekend. Giving yourself some breathing room for assignment 2 will be helpful.
    • Tutorial 1 + Exercise 1 solutions have been released (solutions are released over the weekends)
      • Tutorial solutions are just pushed to the same repo
      • Exercise solutions can be found on the solution branch of your repo

Things to keep an eye on for week 2 :

Have a great weekend, look after yourself and we'll see you on Wednesday!

    Hi everyone!

My name is Hayden and I'll be your primary lecturer & course convenor in 21T3.

We have 350 students across the whole course, and I'm very excited to have you here! I would strongly recommend you all take the time to read the course outline, as it pretty much covers all the key points in the course .

We will be going through an overview of the course in our first lecture tomorrow (Monday 13th September from 6pm-8pm). The lecture link will be posted 5 minutes before the lecture on the lecture timetable page .

In the meantime here are some quick summaries:

    Lectures

The course is made up of two types of lectures:

    Tutorials, Exercises

Tutorials in this course are just like your standard UNSW tutorial - 1 hour with a tutor going through problems. Tutorials are not compulsory to attend.

Please be aware that due to availability there isn't a complete match-up between tutorials on the UNSW timetable and the ones that we're running. The tutorials timetable clearly lists the tutorial times you can attend, and you are able to attend any tutorial time that suits you. We also record at least 1 tutorial a week and share it, for those who miss them.

We do not have lab classes in this course, though they are a series of exercise questions each week that are available for every week of the term.

Both tutorial and exercises content can be found here .

    Help Sessions

Throughout the course we run a series of consultations / help sessions to support your learning, particularly in more assessment heavy weeks. These are drop-in clinics where you can queue up, and once a tutor is available, ask for some help.

All of these times can be found on the schedule page .

    Assignment 1

Assignment 1 will be released tomorrow (Monday the 13th) at 8pm. It will be in a draft state until 8pm on Tuesday the 14th of September. We will try and talk about it in the lecture tomorrow. You have basically 3 weeks to complete it, so don't stress! It's meant to be an easy entry to the course.

Keep an eye out for it on the assignments page !

    Forum

If you haven't already, please join the forum here . It's where you can ask questions throughout the course. And if you have a spare few minutes, introduce yourself .

Other than that, we'll be chatting tomorrow!

    Hayden
