Dear Students,
As required by the university, we have posted COVID safety information on the course website:
COVID-19 Factsheet
. To maintain the health and safety of the UNSW community, please read this factsheet and follow the instructions if you are attending the face-to-face labs.
Dear Students,
First, I would like to welcome everyone and I hope all of you are looking forward to learning about database systems.
In this notice, I will briefly outline how I plan to run the course in T2 2021.
Due to the COVID-19 situation, we will be running most of our course activities online. In the context of our course, this means lectures, consultations and lab sessions are done via a mixture of online platforms and tools. Some labs will be face-to-face offered to on-campus students.
Course management: We use WebCMS3 ( https://webcms3.cse.unsw.edu.au/COMP9311/21T2/ ) to manage the course (the very system you are reading this notice from). All announcements, lecture notes, lab notes, assignment spec, etc. are going to be posted here. Moodle is used to provide access to online live lecture and lecture recordings.
Lectures (lectures start from Week 1): We will deliver lectures live online at the scheduled lecture time - 11:00 to 13:00, Monday and Tuesday (Sydney time). We understand that many students are overseas with different time zones and hope this will not cause too much inconvenience to you. The reason we want to use live lecture delivery is to make the teaching as interactive as possible as I will be able to take questions during the lecture. In case you find it difficult to join the online lecture, you can always access the recorded video afterwards.
All lectures will be delivered and recorded via Blackboard Collaborate in Moodle. There are two ways to access the lecture: 1) we will provide a link to access the lecture (live and recording) in the Lectures tab, next to the lecture notes each week. 2) you may log into Moodle ( https://moodle.telt.unsw.edu.au ) first, find our course, click "lectures and recordings", click Menu (in up left corner), click "Sessions" to join a live lecture or "Recordings" to access the recorded lecture.
Labs (labs start from Week 2):
1) for online lab students:
Detailed lab notes will be provided and you are expected to follow the guide using your own computer. We will schedule online lab sessions throughout the course (via Blackboard Collaborate) and there will be tutors present to help you. Similar to lectures, a link will be provided in the Labs tab in WebCMS for each week, and you are also able to access via Moodle. All online labs will be recorded.
2) for face-to-face lab students:
We are able to provide some face-to-face labs to the students in Sydney. You can either use the lab computers or your own computer and the tutor will present in the lab to assist you. Due to the COVID situation, please wear a face mask if you cannot maintain the 1.5m physical distance. Every f2f lab student has to both tap the student card on the lab card reader and check in on the QR code. Please do not attend the lab if you feel unwell, and you can make up the labs by attending any of the online labs.
Consultation (consultation starts from Week 2): weekly consultation will also be presented via Blackboard Collaborate. You may join the consultation if you have any questions regarding the course. Consultations will be recorded. A link will be provided in the Consultation tab for you to join, also you may join via Moodle.
Assessment : All assignments, projects and final exam will be conducted offline. Generally we allow 2-3 weeks for you to work on assignments and projects.
You can start using the "Q and A page" Forum to ask questions and discuss with your fellow students. Tutors will visit the forum regularly to answer questions. Feel free to ask questions and talk amongst your fellow students in the class.
Looking forward to meeting you all soon.
