Dear Students,
A sample exam paper and its solution are released. Please note that this is only intended to provide a good idea of the difficulty level you can expect from the final exam, so do not expect the scope or question types to be the same. Also note that, unlike our final exam which is a 3-hour exam, this sample exam is designed for a 2-hour exam.
Best, the COMP9311 team
Afternoon all,
A gentle reminder that Assignment 2 is released, and is now accessible under the Assessments section.
The scope of assessment focuses on the learning outcomes below.
Note: While we are still covering material relating to transaction management, you should be to attempt the first question on normal forms based on what we have covered up until now.
Do endeavor to start early, the deadline for the assessment is on the 2nd of April.
Sincerely
Michael
A gentle reminder for students taking the course remotely outside of Australia.
Daylight savings ended at 3:00 am on Sunday 3 April 2022. Consequently, the local time in Australia has
moved backward
by an hour.
It occurred to me that some students might not be aware of this and show up too early for the scheduled lecture.
The Monday lecture will begin at 6:05 pm Sydney local time as usual.
Kindly note the new time difference.
Hope this makes it to you in time,
Michael
UPDATE:
I've managed to upload the somewhere other than webcms3 or Moodle (200Mb Size limit).
Week 5 now contain
two
more links, both contain the same .mp4 video recording.
Note: students currently overseas should
be able to at least access
the One Drive link without a VPN.
(The additional link is there just in case the first link stops working)
Video Recording for WK5 normal form content
The video recording for the wk5 content Normal Form is available.
It is uploaded as the power point file
Normal Forms (PPT) - with narration/recording
.
The file contains the both recording and the drawings, you will be able to see them by starting the power point slide show. I am grateful for everyone's patience.
(Contents uploaded under the Week5 header)
Note: You are able to use the power point folder to generate your .mp4 files to the export quality of your choosing. This is done to bypass the problems from uploading the almost 700MBb .mp4 file.
Assignment 1 Marks
We've finished marking your assignment 1, please expect to see your marks as well as comments left by the marking tutor within sometime today or tomorrow.
Quiet Week
There are no lectures, labs, or consultations scheduled this week 6.
Tutors will continue to monitor the forum for questions from students.
Thank you for your attention, there should be no other notice for this week.
Best of luck with your quiet week studies.
Michael
Project 1 and supporting files released (see Project under Course Work)
The scope of assessment focus on the following learning outcomes.
The deadline for project 1 is
1st of April (Friday) at 16:59:59
Important Advice
:
Familiarize yourself with the project/database first, there is a lot of information in this large database we've provided. So before attempting the queries straight away, try to (1) examine what each relation holds and (2) find out how relations might related to each other. This initial work will will make the project easier for you in the long run.
Best Regards,
Michael
P.s.
We recommend setting up the project database asap so the course staff can immediately assist you with any related issues.
Good evening everyone,
Wk5 Monday content (Functional Dependencies) pushed back due to internet issues during Lecture
I experienced a few internet issues today when delivering the lecture content on campus, mainly me disconnecting and reconnecting to the blackboard session. Unfortunately, the issue seemed to be intermittent and troubleshooting was not successful.
The consequence is that today's lecture (wk5 Mon) on Functional Dependencies was not covered. My apologies for the unexpected issues, and thanks to the students for being patient.
Instead, there was an attempt at a simple project demo on some aspects of the project, places that students usually run into issues the most, as well as a short Q and A session with students.
As for how to proceed from here... Since Thursday's lecture (Normal Forms) is a continuation of the contents of Monday's lecture, the plan now is to cover the Monday content on Thursday and follow up with me uploading a video recording of the Thursday Lecture.
This setback shouldn't affect your ability to work on the Project, no worries there.
Best Regards,
Michael
Good evening everyone, this notice is here to inform all students that...
(1) Assignment 1 is released
(see Assessments under Course Work)
The scope of assessment focuses on the following three learning outcomes
*(2) and (3): I will cover in the wk2 Thursday lecture
By the time we finish the wk2 Thursday lecture, you will have all the skills/knowledge needed to attempt assignment 1.
For brevity sake, the
deadline for assignment 1 is set for the 11th of March (Friday) at 16:59:59
(See other details e.g. submission instructions in the assignment PDF)
(2) Practice Set 1 is also released (see Practices under Course Work)
Practice set questions are there to aid you in your learning.
This is a good indicator to see if you've understood the concepts taught.
(We recommend attempting the practice questions before inspecting the solutions for maximum value)
Best of Luck,
Michael
From comp9311,
A gentle reminder that
the lab component of this course
begins in week 2
, especially for students who might have missed the message yesterday.
There are
no comp9311 labs in week1
(for both online and f2f labs).
Best, Michael
Hi Students,
Firstly, welcome to the course COMP9311. I hope you look forward to learning about database systems. In this opening notice, I outline how the course is run in T1 2022.
With no thanks to COVID-19, we will run a significant majority of our course activities online. Specifically, lectures, consultations are held online. Lab sessions are all online with the expectation of a very small number of labs with face-to-face available.
We manage the course with WebCMS3 and Moodle
(
https://webcms3.cse.unsw.edu.au/COMP9311/22T1
).
If you’re reading this notice, congrats, you’ve found us.
All announcements, lecture notes, lab notes, assignment spec, etc. are going to be posted here.
Moodle is used to provide access to online live lectures and lecture recordings.
Lectures
start from Week 1
:
We will deliver lectures live online at the scheduled lecture time 18:00 – 20:00 Monday and 16:00 – 18:00 Thursday (Sydney time). We understand that many students are overseas with different time zones and hope this will not cause too much inconvenience to you.
The reason we want to use live lecture delivery is to make the teaching as interactive as possible as I will be able to take questions during the lecture. In case you find it difficult to join the online lecture, the option of going at your pace via the recorded video is an option.
Lectures will be delivered in Blackboard Collaborate in Moodle.
Lectures are also recorded in Blackboard Collaborate in Moodle.
There are two ways to access the lecture:
1) You can access it directly from Moodle (
https://moodle.telt.unsw.edu.au
), find our course, click "lectures and recordings", click Menu (in up left corner), click "Sessions" to join a live lecture or "Recordings" to access the recorded lecture.
2) We will provide a copy of the link to access the lecture (live and recording) in the WebCMS
Lectures Tab
, next to the lecture notes each week.
Labs start from Week 2:
1) Online Labs: Detailed lab notes will be provided, and you are expected to follow the guide using your own computer. We will schedule online lab sessions throughout the course (via Blackboard Collaborate) and there will be tutors present to help you.
A related copy of the link will also be provided in the
WebCMS
Labs tab
each week, and you are also able to access via Moodle. All online labs will be recorded.
2) Face to Face Labs: You may either use the lab computers or your own computer. A tutor will present in the lab to assist you. You are required to follow the university guidelines and wear a mask indoors. You will be required to abide by the latest physical distance restrictions. Every f2f lab student must tap the student card on the lab card reader and must check in on the QR code.
Do not
attend the lab if you feel unwell, and you can make up the labs by attending any of the online labs.
Consultation
starts from Week 2:
Weekly consultation will also be presented via Blackboard Collaborate. You may join the consultation if you have any questions regarding the course. Consultations will be recorded. A link will be provided in the Consultation tab for you to join, also you may join via Moodle.
We will update the consultation time slot when it is finalized
On Assessments:
The final exam will be conducted offline
(Update: The 22T1 exam is online, and will not be in person. The same will be true for all other assessment. I meant that you
do not need to stay online to complete the exam
remotley). For remaining assessments, we generally give 2-3 weeks for you to work on assignments and projects.
You can start using the WebCMS "Q and A page" section to ask questions and engage with other students. Tutors will visit the forum regularly to answer questions.
Best of luck, and I look forward to meeting you all (in some capacity) soon.
