Dear students,
Labs start next week. Lab 01 materials have been released. You can try it yourself. Please let me know if you cannot connect to the CSE machine. To attend a lab, you will need to bring your own laptop . There may be charging ports in the lab room, but we have ~26 labs spread across the campus, so we don’t know the details of each lab room. Before you go, you’d better check it yourself. CSE has a laptop-lending machine. You could borrow one for your lab if you forget your laptop or it is not working.
Assignment 1 on Data Modelling and Relational Algebra will be released next Monday and due on Friday of Week 4 . You’ll have ~3 weeks to complete the assignment.
Best Regards,
Junhua
Dear Students,
We are delighted that so many of you attended today's lecture, both in person and online. It's great to you find that today's lecture both useful and inspiring for all of us. After this first session, there are some matters about attending the lectures we'd like to address.
Because we have a large number of new students this semester, our current classroom space is insufficient to accommodate everyone. We have noticed that several students enrolled in the online version of this course have chosen to attend today's lecture in person. While we're pleased with your enthusiasm, this has resulted in a shortage of seats for those registered to attend in person, forcing them to leave.
For fairness, if you're taking the online course, please keep participating online for now. We anticipate that there may be more seats available starts from week 2 or 3. Before you decide to attend in person, please make sure that there are enough seats available for those students who registered for the in-person lectures; otherwise, please attend online lectures.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
Best regards,
Junhua
Hi Students,
Firstly, welcome to the course COMP9311. This week is the O-Week. I hope you look forward to learning about database systems. In this opening notice, I outline how the course is run in 2023T3 and provide some important information that you may find helpful.
As required by UNSW, all students must return to campus from 2023T2. In this term, we will run multi-modal courses. Specifically, lectures are delivered in hybrid mode with recordings. Lab sessions are face-to-face in classrooms on yourown laptops. We will also run an online forum and online help sessions (i.e., consultations) where you can get help from our tutors and staffs.
The main course materials reside on WebCMS3 ( https://webcms3.cse.unsw.edu.au/COMP9311/23T3/ ). All announcements, lecture notes, lab notes, assignment specs, etc., will be posted here. If you're reading this notice, congrats, you've found us.
Moodle( https://moodle.telt.unsw.edu.au/course/view.php?id... ) provides access to online lectures, recordings, consultations, and assessment submissions.
Lectures start from Week 1. The face-to-face lectures are scheduled to
14:00 - 16:00 Monday at Ainsworth G03 (K-J17-G03)
16:00 - 18:00 Thursday at E19 Patricia O'Shane 104 (K-E19-104).
The online lectures are scheduled at the same time as the f2f lectures. The links to them will be posted on WebCMS3 before each week.
All lectures will be recorded, which can be found on Moodle after the first lecture. All lectures will be delivered via Blackboard Collaborate and recorded via ECHO360 in Moodle. There are two ways to access the lecture: 1) We will provide a link to access the lecture (live and recording) in the Lectures tab, next to each week's lecture notes. 2) You may log into Moodle ( https://moodle.telt.unsw.edu.au ) first, find our course, and click "Blackboard Collaborate" to join a live lecture. You may click "Lecture Recordings" to access the recorded lectures.
Labs start from Week 2. Due to the limited space of school labs, this term we have to run BYOD labs face-to-face in classrooms. So you need to bring your own laptop and make it fully charged. CSE has a laptop-lending machine, so if you forget your laptop or it is not working properly, you could borrow a laptop for a class: https://taggi.cse.unsw.edu.au/FAQ/Borrow_A_Laptop/. During the lab, a tutor will be present to assist you and answer your questions.
Consultation starts from Week 1. Weekly consultations will also be presented online via Blackboard Collaborate. You may join the consultation if you have any questions regarding the course. Consultations will be recorded. A link will be provided in the Consultation tab for you to join. Also, you may join via Moodle. Consultations will be held 10:00-12:00 Friday each week.
Ed Forums. You can use the Ed forums (linked on the WebCMS menu) to ask questions and engage with other students. Tutors will visit the forum regularly to answer questions. Please let me know if you are unable to access it.
Best of luck, and I look forward to meeting you all soon.
