  • Group Project Specification Released

Posted by Erik Meijering Friday 11 October 2024, 08:06:34 PM.

    Hi Students,

The group project specification and marking criteria are now available under WebCMS3 > COMP9517 > Course Work > Assessments > Group Project.

As announced earlier today, the course admins will finalise and announce the project groups on Sunday. In the meantime, have a look at the project specification so you're already up to speed when you start discussing with your group next week.

Have a great time in the coming weeks developing computer vision methods and solving the described problem with your group. We look forward to seeing the results in Week 10.

The weekly tutorial sessions continue in Weeks 6-10. Do make use of them to get feedback if you have any questions, or suggestions when you're feeling stuck. The tutors are there to help you.

    Cheers,
    Erik

  • Group Project

Posted by Andrew Gunawan Friday 11 October 2024, 04:28:25 PM.

    Hi Students,

Just a reminder to form your group projects of 5 (if you'd like to). We will be finalising groups on Sunday at which point there will be no more opportunity to change groups. At this time we will also assign any students without a group to one, and fill up any groups with less than 5 members.

    Thanks,

    Andrew

  • Tutorial Groups

Posted by Andrew Gunawan Wednesday 18 September 2024, 03:53:17 PM.

    Hi Students,

I have updated the spreadsheet for the tutorial groups. Please note, there shouldn't have been any changes made unless you have contacted us via email, so not to worry for most of you. We have had to swap a few tutors in the Thursday sessions around so don't worry if the names don't exactly match what you initially saw, the links on Moodle are correct and should take you to the right tute.

Let us know if you have any concerns at cs9517@cse.unsw.edu.au.

  • Lab 1 Specification Released

Posted by Erik Meijering Monday 16 September 2024, 05:40:52 PM.

    Hi Students,

    The Lab 1 specification is now available under WebCMS3 > COMP9517 > Course Work > Assessments > Lab 1.

Please note that some of the lab topics are covered in this week's lectures. So don't stress out when you read the lab specification and there are things in there that you haven't heard about yet.

Just repeating what I said in an earlier post: Each lab is about topics taught in the lectures of the same week. We release the lab specification early in the week to give you more time to have a look before coming to the lectures and prepare for the tutor session of that week.

The deadline for Lab 1 submission is Week 3, Friday 27 September 2024, 18:00:00 Sydney time.

If you have any questions, feel free to discuss with your tutors this week or ask on the forum.

The link to your tutor session can be found on the Moodle page under Online Tutorials.

    Erik

  • Tutorial Groups and Project Groups

Posted by Andrew Gunawan Monday 16 September 2024, 11:28:50 AM.

    Hi Students,

This week tutorials will start. Everyone should have been allocated to a Tutorial, which you can find in Tutorials>Tutorial Groups. Please let us know ASAP if you cannot see your zID in the list by emailing cs9517@cse.unsw.edu.au . Students should be able to see links in Moodle in the next day or so to join their tutorial.

As you might know, towards the end of this term, you will be completing a project in groups of 5. Students can form groups in the Groups section of webcms. Please note that forming groups is optional, students without a group will be assigned to one, and groups with less that 5 members will have additional members assigned to them. Also, students do not need to be in the same tutorial to join the same project group.

Have a great experience this term and let us know if there are any issues!

    Regards,

    Andrew

  • Lab Preparations

Posted by Erik Meijering Thursday 12 September 2024, 08:37:08 AM.

    Hi Students,

As mentioned in yesterday's lecture, the labs and online tutor sessions will start next week . The course admin will soon inform you which tutor group you're part of and how to access your tutor session.

In all labs in this course, you are required to submit your code in the form of a Jupyter Notebook (.ipynb file). Submissions in any other form will not be marked.

If you're not yet familiar with Jupyter, or Python, or OpenCV, you are highly encouraged to install the necessary software and learn the basics before the labs start . To help you with that, we have prepared a document with useful links. See WebCMS3 > Course Work > Assessments > Lab Preparations.

In the first tutor session, the tutors can help you with any questions about the software and the lab tasks . We plan to release the first lab early next week so that you can already have a look before coming to the session.

Please note that each lab is about topics taught in the lectures of the same week . Since the tutor sessions are centrally scheduled after the first lecture of the week, the lab specification may not make much sense to you until after the lecture. But at least it should give you some idea of what's expected and it will become clearer after you've heard the lectures.

To give you multiple opportunities to ask questions about any lab, we aim to release each lab early in the week, with a due date late the week after , so that there are always two tutor sessions between the release date and the due date. And, of course, you can always ask anything via the Q+A Forum on Ed.

    Cheers,
    Erik

  • COMP9517 Q+A Forum

Posted by Erik Meijering Thursday 05 September 2024, 03:44:41 PM.

    Dear Students,

Throughout the term there will be various ways to ask questions and get answers:

    1. During the lectures. Certainly in the class room. If you're following the lectures online, you should be able to use the chat function to post questions about the presented materials at any time. With so many students we'll have to see how it works, technically and timewise, for the lecturer to actually pick them up during the lecture. Otherwise, see options 2 and 3 below.

    2. Every week (except the first week) there will be a 1-hour tutor session (separate from the lectures) during which you can consult with the tutors of your tutor group regarding the labs and group project (more details on these will follow next week). Tutor groups will be created soon and we will post the links ahead of time.

    3. At any time, you can post questions in the Q+A forum. You will find the link to this forum in the menu on WebCMS3. The platform we are using for this is Ed. Please sign up and enroll as soon as possible using your UNSW email address to get access. The team will attempt to answer questions within 24 hours.

    Best wishes,
    Erik

  • Welcome to COMP9517 24T3

Posted by Erik Meijering Thursday 05 September 2024, 03:42:27 PM.

    Dear Students,

Welcome to COMP9517 2024 Term 3 starting next week . I hope you're all doing well and are ready to learn about Computer Vision!

Please have a look at the Course Outline (available in ECOS via the menu on WebCMS3) for more details on what to expect and what's expected in this course.

The course will be delivered in hybrid mode . That is, both the Wednesday and the Thursday lectures will be on campus and online at the same time, as per the Timetable (see the menu on WebCMS3). Links to the online lectures will be provided early next week (on the Moodle page of the course).

Please come to the on-campus lectures only if you signed up for them . This is because the room (Keith Burrows Theatre) has a maximum capacity of only 438 while we have 800+ students in the course this term. Of course, the lectures will be recorded, so you can also just watch them afterwards (attendance is not compulsory).

In the past few years we have broken the record in terms of student numbers every new term, which keeps challenging us. Clearly, interest in computer vision and its many applications is growing rapidly. Please bear with us as we do our best solving technical challenges in making the course an enjoyable experience for you.

While the lectures and the final exam will be on campus, everything else will be online this term. We will keep you posted weekly via WebCMS3 to help you stay on track with all activities.

On behalf of the entire COMP9517 24T3 Team, which includes Co-Lecturers A/Prof. Yang Song and Dr Sonit Singh, the two Course Admins Andrew Gunawan and Piumi Don Simonge, and our 30 Tutors, I wish you a great time learning about Computer Vision!

If anything is unclear, use the Q+A Forum on Ed for any questions about the course (see the link in the menu on WebCMS3). The forum is monitored daily and we do our best to answer within 24 hours.

    Erik Meijering
    Lecturer in Charge
