Dear Students,
A few updates and reminders as we approach the end of the course:
We will take approximately
three weeks
to finalise the Group Project marking. This allows sufficient time for a thorough review and moderation of marks to ensure consistency across all groups.
We will also adjust individual marks, where appropriate, to reflect individual contributions based on the information provided in the peer review forms.
The Peer Review Form
is
optional
. You will
NOT
receive any penalty if you do not submit it or if you submit it late. Moodle may display a “penalty” due to a default system setting that cannot be turned off. You do not need to submit it if you agree that all group members contributed appropriately/equally to the project.
In case you missed our previous announcement, example exam questions and some related information are available under
Assessments > Exam
.
The exam is centrally managed by the UNSW Exams team. You should have received a notification from the Exams team and be able to see the schedule and details for your exam on
Saturday, 15 August
.
Please make sure you check the official exam instructions carefully and present early, as advised by the Exams team.
Thank you to everyone who has completed the myExperience survey so far. If you haven’t participated yet, there are still a few hours left before it closes. Please log in to https://myexperience.unsw.edu.au/ to complete the survey to complete the survey.
On behalf of the entire COMP9517 team, and with special thanks to our course admin and 26T2 tutors who have supported the course throughout the term, we would greatly appreciate your participation and support.
If you have any questions, please continue to use the Course Forum or contact cs9517@cse.unsw.edu.au . We will continue to monitor these channels up until the exam day.
Good luck with your final exam, and thank you for being part of COMP9517 this term!
Best,
Dong

Please log into https://myexperience.unsw.edu.au/ or to Moodle course page and fill in the survey.
Best,
Dong
Hi everyone,
The peer review for all groups is now open. This is for each member of the group to enter a participation percentage for all their own group members, including themselves. Please complete this activity by Thursday, 13 August 2026, 18:00 PM.
To enter the peer review, login into Moodle and click on Review your project team contribution. Click 'Add submission' and submit an empty file. You will be taken to the review page, where you can select the percentages of all team member contributions, and optionally add comments. Comments, if any, should include a statement about your own contribution and the contributions of all other members. If applicable, please add links to any supporting evidence.
Here are a few notes for the submission:

Dear Students,
Thank you to everyone who has already completed the myExperience survey!
Your honest and constructive feedback is greatly appreciated. It helps not only improve this course, but also supports teaching staff across UNSW in making positive changes to their courses. Your feedback will benefit future students taking this course, just as feedback from previous students helps improve the courses you take today.
If you haven’t completed the survey yet, you can access it through the Moodle course page, via the link in your email, or by logging in to https://myexperience.unsw.edu.au/ .
As of today, our participation rate is above 10% . To ensure the survey results are meaningful and statistically representative, we encourage as many students as possible to take part.
If you have not yet completed the survey, please take a few minutes to do so before it closes on 13 August 2026 . I may send one final reminder closer to the closing date.
Thank you very much for your time and valuable feedback.
Best,
Dong

Hi everyone,
Project submission links are available under WebCMS3 > COMP9517 > Assessments > Group Project.
Please be reminded to submit only one copy of your project per team (one member of the team should submit the project on behalf of the group), and be aware of the submission file size limitation.
As we are currently working with limited disk storage, we kindly ask all teams to avoid uploading multiple submissions . This will help ensure smooth handling of all submitted files and avoid potential conflicts during the submission process.
The peer review form will be available this Friday in Moodle. You will get more detailed instructions about how to fill out the peer review form later this week.
If you have any questions or run into any issues, feel free to reach out via cs9517@cse.unsw.edu.au .
Kind regards,
Haonan
Hi Everyone, The slides of the Week 9 lectures are now available under WebCMS3 > COMP9517 > Course Work > Lectures > Week 9. Best, Dong
Dear all,
The group project is due Friday 7 August 2026 — about two weeks from now. If your group has not started yet, please start as early as possible. Training and evaluating models, recording a 10-minute video with every member presenting, and writing the report do not compress well into a couple of days.
Please also read the Project Specification carefully and make sure your report covers all the required content. You do not want to lose marks simply because something was not reported, even though you did the work. :)
Please
contact your group members and contribute to the project meaningfully
if you have not already. Agree early on who does what, and remember that all members are expected contribute to the methods, code, and experiments, not only to the video or report.
Check and manage your project progress (of all members) regularly to ensure that planned tasks are completed on schedule. If any delays or issues arise, identify them early and adjust your plan or adopt alternative plans as soon as possible, for obtaining expected marks.
If you cannot reach a group member, please keep a record of your attempts to contact them and of their lack of response. (Optional) More generally, it is useful to keep work logs as part of your working notes, or some other record of contributions. For example, Git logs can be a good record if you use Git (GitHub or any similar service) to manage and collaborate on your project.
As mentioned in the Project Specification, you will have the opportunity to submit a
survey
on the peer-evaluated contributions after the due date, together with the records above if needed. Submitting it is
optional
— do so if there is something you would like us to take into account. We will consider the critical information when determining the marking, and the Course Admin and I will handle the process accordingly.
There is still enough time to do this well — it is a genuinely interesting problem, and the process of working through it is worth experiencing. I hope you enjoy it.
Good luck!
Best,
Dong

Hi everyone,
We have now finalised the groups you will be working in for your projects. Please find the list under Assessments > Group Project > Project Group Assignments. Please note that we will no longer be using the groups function in WebCMS, please refer to this PDF file from now on, as this is how you will be marked.
All students should be in the groups they joined via WebCMS by last week Friday or assigned to some group if you didn't join a WebCMS group. There should also be 4 or 5 members in the groups. As noted in the previous posts, no changing of groups will be possible unless in extreme circumstances. Forgetting to join a group on WebCMS will not be considered a reasonable excuse.
If you have any questions or there are any issues, please get in touch ASAP via class email: cs9517@cse.unsw.edu.au . Hope you enjoy the project!

Hi Students,
The Lab 1 specification is now available under WebCMS3 → COMP9517 → Course Work → Assessments → Lab 1.
Please note that some of the lab topics will be covered in this week's lectures (Week 2), so don't worry if you come across concepts that you haven't seen before. As mentioned previously, each lab is designed to reinforce the topics taught in the lectures of the same week. We release the lab specifications early to give you time to familiarise yourself with the material before attending the lectures and tutor sessions.
The deadline for Lab 1 is Friday, 19 June 2025, 10:00 PM (22:00), Sydney time.
If you have any questions, please discuss them with your tutors during this week's sessions or post them on the course forum.
The link to your tutor session can be found on Moodle under Online Tutorials.
Please find your tutorial group in the list provided under the Tutorials heading. There, you will find your zID, tutorial group number, and the tutors assigned to your group. If you have any questions or encounter any issues, please contact us at cs9517@cse.unsw.edu.au. More details can be found in the previous post,
“Tutorial Times and Assignments.”
Cheers,
Dong
Hi Students,
To clarify the project group arrangements, please form your project groups by Friday of Week 5 . All groups must be registered on WebCMS3 using the Groups function (the Groups section in the menu).
Each group should consist of 5 students . Group members may come from different tutorial groups. Groups can also include a mix of undergraduate and postgraduate students if you wish.
After Week 5 Friday, if you have not joined a group, we will assign you to one.
Similarly, if your group has fewer than 5 members, we may allocate additional students to complete the group. We expect all project groups to be finalised by the end of Week 5.
Please start forming your groups as early as possible. We want this project to be a positive and productive experience for everyone. Once groups are finalised, group changes will not be permitted after the deadline (end of Week 5) .
Best,
Dong
Hi Everyone,
We have now allocated students to their tutorial groups and times, along with the corresponding tutor pairs. You can view the full assignment list under Tutorials >> Tutorial Times and Assignments .
Online tutorials will be started next week and held via Blackboard Collaborate. Access links are available in Moodle >> COMP9517-Computer Vision - 2026 T2 >> Online Tutorials . Please make sure you join the session link that matches your assigned Group Number + Tutorial Time + Tutor Pair.
This term, tutorial links are open to all students, so you may attend a different session if necessary. However, to ensure a balanced workload across sessions, we strongly encourage you to attend your allocated tutorial whenever possible. The allocations are based on the time slot you selected through myUNSW, so please double-check that your assigned day and start time are correct.
If you have any questions or there are any issues, please get in touch via class email cs9517@cse.unsw.edu.au
Regards,
Haonan
Hi Students,
As mentioned in today's lecture, the labs and online tutor sessions will commence next week (there will be no tutor sessions this week). The course admin will soon inform you of your tutor group allocation and how to access your tutor session.
For all labs in this course, you are required to submit your code as a Jupyter Notebook (.ipynb file). Submissions in any other format will not be marked.
If you are not yet familiar with Jupyter, Python, or OpenCV, you are strongly encouraged to install the necessary software and learn the basics before the labs begin. To assist with this, we have prepared a document with useful resources. Please see WebCMS3 > Course Work > Assessments > Lab Preparations.
Detailed submission instructions on how to use the submission system will be provided together with Lab 1.
During the first tutor session next week, tutors will be available to help with software setup issues and answer questions about the lab tasks. We plan to release Lab 1 early next week so that you can review it before attending the session.
Please note that each lab is designed to reinforce the topics covered in that week's lectures. As a result, when the lab specification is released early in the week, some tasks may not be fully clear until after the corresponding lectures. However, reviewing the lab beforehand will give you a good idea of what to expect, and the requirements should become clearer as the week's lectures progress. The corresponding lecture slides will also be released around early of the week, the similar time as the lab, providing additional guidance and context.
We release each lab early in the week, with a due date late the week after (at the end of Friday), so that there are two tutor sessions between the release date and the due date/time.
As always, if you have any questions, please post them on the Discourse forum.
Cheers,
Dong
Hi Students,
If you are attending the lectures online (starting this afternoon later), you can access them via
Moodle → Lecture Recordings
. Simply click on the current lecture, and the live stream should become available at the scheduled lecture start time.

Hi everyone, the slides of the Week 1 lectures are now available under WebCMS3 > COMP9517 > Course Work > Lectures > Week 1. These slides are for the lectures on Wednesday and Thursday. Cheers, Dong
Dear Students,
Welcome to COMP9517 26T2 starting next week. Please have a look at the Course Outline (available in ECOS via the menu on WebCMS3) for more details about the course structure, expectations, and assessment.
The lectures will be delivered both in-person on campus and online via the Live Streaming option in Echo360 . All lectures will also be recorded. The links to lectures in Echo360 (both live streaming and recordings) can be accessed via Moodle (under "Lecture Recordings").
Tutorials will start in Week 2 and will be online via Blackboard Collaborate, which will be accessible via Moodle. You will be allocated to a tutor group later in Week 1 based on your enrolment information, after which you will gain access to the Blackboard Collaborate links in Moodle.
There are no tutorial sessions in Week 1 but we will release some pre-lab preparation material in Week 1.
We will upload lecture slides here (under Course Work => Lectures) every Monday for that week.
We will post more instructions here regarding the assignments, project groups, final exam, etc.
For discussion forum , we will use Discourse (see the "Course Forum" link in the menu on WebCMS3). The forum is monitored daily and we do our best to answer within 24 hours. For more individual questions, please email the class account: cs9517@cse.unsw.edu.au .
In the past few years, we have consistently had large student enrolments each term, which continues to challenge us. Clearly, interest in computer vision and its wide range of applications is growing rapidly. Please bear with us as we work through the technical and organisational challenges and do our best to make the course an enjoyable and rewarding experience for you.
On behalf of the entire COMP9517 26T2 team, including our course admin Haonan Zhong and all tutors, I hope you enjoy the course and have a rewarding journey learning Computer Vision.
Best,
Dong Gong
