  • Week 12 Update and Exam Information

Posted by Dean Wunder Wednesday 18 November 2020, 03:01:01 PM.

    Week 12 Lab A
The lab exam should now be working. You can access the lab exam by clicking on the link in the Week 12 Lab A page. Your marks from the lab exam will contribute to your week 12 lab marks. The lab exam is a similar format to the final exam, but the final exam will have more questions.

    Thursday's Prac Exam
We will have another prac exam on Thursday, in the usual 10:30am-11:30am Lab B timeslot. The exam is worth 2%. Attendance is compulsory, it will be a similar format to last week's prac exam.

    The Final Exam
The final exam is scheduled for Friday the 4th of December 12pm-6pm Sydney time. It has 6 hours associated with it, but the exam is designed to be completed in 3 hours. This is to allow for any time which might be lost due to technical issues. You can use all 6 hours if you want. You can start late or finish early if you want. There will not be a zoom call. You will be able to contact us on an email address if there are any issues. The format of the final exam will be similar to the format of this week's lab exam. You will only be allowed to submit answers during the 6 hour timeslot.

    In Person Workshop and Consultation
We will be holding a 2 hour exam workshop and consultation on the 2nd of December 10am-12pm. It will be in Room W301 of UNSW Global. I look forward to meeting any of you who can attend. It will be your opportunity to practice working on some revision questions we will provide, or bring your own questions and we will help you with any problems. My understanding is this workshop will be streamed for those of you who can not attend.

    Assignment 2
Please don't forget about assignment 2. There will be a consultation at 5:30pm-6:30pm on Thursday. Please attend if you need help.

Only a few more weeks now, keep the consistency.

  • Week 12 Notice

Posted by Dean Wunder Tuesday 17 November 2020, 01:56:18 PM.

    Hello everyone!

This week in the lectures we will be focusing on some extra content, not assessable in the final exam.

In the Lab A timeslot this week you will get access to a practical exam, along with some lab questions. The practical exam in Lab A is meant to give you an understanding of how the final exam will work. You can submit answers to the Lab A practical exam at any time this week before the Sunday deadline.

Apologies, I was a little bit confused in the lecture. There is also going to be our final prac exam on Thursday in the Lab B timeslot. That will be worth 2%. For the Lab B exam on Thursday, you must be in attendance. You must answer the questions in the allocated time.

    Hope this clarifies things,

    - Dean (on behalf of CP1511 teaching staff)

  • Week 11 Update

Posted by Dean Wunder Wednesday 11 November 2020, 09:06:55 AM.

    Hello everyone,

    Lab A Marks

Week 10's Lab A exercises have been marked. You can check them by clicking on "Submissions and Marks" in the left menu on WebCMS3. As always, if there are any issues with the marks, please let us know.

    Practical Exam Tomorrow
Don't forget! Tomorrow will be a practical exam, worth 2%. Please make sure you aren't late.

Accidental Email: Lab 12 Submission Reminder
I've heard reports that an email was sent to some student reminding them to submit lab 12 exercises before a particular date. This email was a mistake, and should not have been sent. Please ignore it. Lab 12 will be due on the Sunday at the end of Week 12, similar to previous labs.

    Let's Keep the Momentum!
Well done on the course so far, you have all been great students. Keep going. 1.5 more weeks of classes then the final exam. After that, take a break, but for now, keep your hard work, keep your determination and most importantly keep your consistency. We'll get through this together.

  • Week 10 Update

Posted by Dean Wunder Wednesday 04 November 2020, 09:16:26 PM.

    Hello everyone,

I hope you have enjoyed the course so far. We have two and a bit more weeks until the end of classes.

    Assignment 1 Marks

Assignment 1 marks (correctness and style) should now be available. You can view them by clicking on "Submissions and Marks" on the left menu of WebCMS3. Overall - well done to you all. The marks have been very pleasing

    Week 9 Lab A Marks

These marks should also be available in the same place - please let me know if there are any issues with these marks.

Second Chance at Last Week's Prac Exam

There were some technical issues with last week's practical exam, so I have decided to release these questions as a take-home exam in our Lab B exercises this week. You can submit answers to these questions on regular VLAB - you do not need to use the exam environment.

When marking this prac exam, we will give whichever mark is greater out of the mark you receive from your submissions in the exam last week, or the mark you receive in the Lab B this week. For this reason, the Lab B will be an opportunity to retry those questions which contribute to 2% of your final grade.

You will have until this Sunday 8pm to complete these Lab B exercises.

    Assignment 2

Please remember about assignment 2. If you haven't started already, now is a good time to start!

    Assignment 1 Marks

Assignment 1 correctness marks have been released. The correctness marks are the results of your Slide assignment's performance against our automated testing. You should be able to view them by clicking on the on the "Submissions and Marks" option on the left menu of WebCMS3, then click on the blue button next to "ass1_slide". The style marking of your assignment may not be complete yet, I will let you know when that is available.

Overall, having looked at the marks for the assignment - can I just say how incredibly proud I am of your progression! Cast your minds back to the beginning of the term and think about how far you have come. You have all done an amazing job. Keep it going. Stay on track. Learning can be difficult, but consistency and perseverance will continue these great results through to the end of the term.

    Congratulations!

Posted by Dean Wunder Tuesday 20 October 2020, 09:30:44 AM.

    Hello everyone!

    Week 8 Content

I hope you've all enjoyed last weeks lectures where we revised the content of weeks 1-6. This week we will be continuing with a new chapter of the course content - linked lists. Like arrays, linked lists are a very important part of the course, and assignment 2 will be heavily based on them. The goal of lectures this week will be to prepare you with all of the concepts required to start assignment 2.

    Assignment 2

Assignment 2 is Castle Defense! In this game you will build towers to defend Chicken the cat from approaching enemies in the realm. It has been released, and you can read through the spec by clicking on the "Assignment 2 - Castle Defense" link in the left menu on WebCMS3. At present you haven't been taught everything you need to start this assignment, which is why we have some more time before the due date compared to assignment 1.

    Week 7 Lab A Marks

Week 7 Lab A marks should now be available. You can view them by clicking on "Submissions and Marks" on the left menu on WebCMS3. As always, please let me know if there are any issues.

I can't wait to show you all linked lists. In my mind they are such a beautiful concept. Please reach out to me if you need any assistance at all. I am here to help you all.

  • Welcome to Week 7!

Posted by Dean Wunder Monday 12 October 2020, 09:48:27 AM.

    Hi everyone,

Welcome to week 7. We are officially more than half way through the course. Congratulations!

This week in lectures we will be doing a week of revision. I hope I can cover everything we have learnt in the term so far. Tutorials and labs will continue - this week they will cover the content of last week's lectures (pointers and structs).

I hope you are all going well with the assignment. Please feel free to post on the course forum or email me if you are stuck on anything. Feedback is essential in the process of learning.

Apologies for the delay in releasing Week 5 test marks. They should be released soon.

  • Catch Up Tutorial and Marks

Posted by Dean Wunder Tuesday 06 October 2020, 06:03:24 PM.

    Hi everyone,

Please note if you wish to join the tutorial now, you have to go to the next page on the sessions on Blackboard Collaborate. It is a bit difficult to find.

Also, there are issues with the marking for first_middle_last.c and the test from week 5. I will be investigating this soon and will fix.

    - Dean (on behalf of CP1511 teaching staff)

  • Welcome to Week 6!

Posted by Dean Wunder Tuesday 06 October 2020, 10:05:24 AM.

    Hi everyone,

    Sydney Timezone Change

Please note that Sydney's timezone has now changed by 1 hour due to daylight savings. If you are not in south-east Australia, please make sure to check the timezone conversion as it has likely changed. This will affect deadlines and class times. Also note that the Lab deadline for this week is back to Sunday, not Monday.

    Week 5 Exam Results

Week 5 Exam results can be viewed using the command 1091 classrun -sturec. If you did not do well on this exam, don't worry. Not many people did well at all. I now think that the exam questions might have been too hard. Please do not be discouraged by your result. I will try to make future exams more approachable.

    Week 6 Content

This week we will be focusing on some new content: pointers and structs. Pointers are a difficult concept to understand. Students usually need it explained about 4 times before they truly understand pointers. This week's content doesn't really have much prerequisite knowledge from previous weeks, so if you are behind please come anyway.

    Week 7: Revision Week

In week 7 we will not be introducing any new content at all. We will cover the entire content of the course in fast mode in week 7's lectures. In the first lecture we will cover content from weeks 1-3. In the second lecture we will cover week 4 and some of week 5. In the third lecture we will cover the rest of week 5 and week 6. If you are behind, this will be a fantastic opportunity to catch up, and help you with the assignment.

    Assignment 1 Feedback

We have about 1.5 weeks until the assignment 1 is due. Now is a good time to seek feedback on your code. Even if you haven't finished it yet, even if you are only starting, please email me, or post on the course forum asking for feedback on your latest autotest/give submission. The feedback I give you now will help you increase your marks for assignment 1.

In general, please feel free to email me if you need any help with anything.

  • Marks, Arrays and Assignment 1

Posted by Dean Wunder Friday 25 September 2020, 09:08:12 AM, last modified Friday 25 September 2020, 09:08:35 AM.

    Hello all,

Week 3 Lab A exercise marks should now be available. You can view them by clicking on "Submissions and Marks" on the left menu of our WebCMS3 page. Week 3 practical exam marks are also available. To view these you need to use a different method. Log into CSE VLAB, and run the following command:
    1091 classrun -sturec

This will open a window where you can see your Week3_q1, Week3_q2, Week3_q3 marks near the top of the window. Please contact us via dp1091@cse.unsw.edu.au if there is any problems or if you believe you have been marked incorrectly.

Marks from the week 3 practical exam will not contribute to your grade.

This week we have started to look at arrays. Arrays can be a difficult concept. They were difficult for me when I first learnt them, but the more you practice using them, the easier it will become. If you are feeling overwhelmed, don't worry. We will spend a lot of time next week revising material, and practicing using arrays. Please feel free to email us or post on the course forum if you need any assistance at all.

Assignment 1 will be made available to you this weekend. It will be sliding into your lap shortly...

In next week's practical exam, you must turn on your camera. If you don't turn on your camera, your exam will not be marked and you will receive 0 for that exam.

Attendance to tutorials and labs is compulsory in this course. If you have not been attending tutorials and labs and you have not submitted any lab exercises recently, we will be reaching out to you to offer assistance.

    Hello!

Welcome to Week 4 of CP1511!

We've had a slight staffing change, I will be taking over from Aarthi in the tutorials and lectures of this course.

This week we will be practicing our looping skills as well as introducing a new topic - arrays. I hope to see you in the tutorials, labs, and lectures.

It's important that we focus on arrays, because the first assignment will be released at the end of this week, and it is heavily based on arrays.

If you need any assistance throughout the remainder of the course, don't be afraid to email me or post on the course forum.
