Hi everyone,
If you find that there is a difference between the course mark in your results email and the final mark in WebCMS from when we released marks the other day - the course mark in your results email is correct.
We made a slight error in summing up the marks to display to you on WebCMS meaning that the final value was 3 marks higher than it should have been. We have rectified this issue and if you check your marks in WebCMS now they should be consistent with your results in myUNSW. None of your raw sprint or portfolio marks have changed or had any errors.
We're really sorry about this - this probably disappoints a few of you :( Please reach out if you have any further concerns and enjoy the rest of your holidays!
Hi everyone,
Congratulations on completing SENG2021.
We made it - the course is over and you have all done a spectacular job!
The following marks are now available to view under the Grades section on WebCMS:
If you are distressed by receiving your marks you can always reach out and seek some support, Lifeline is available 24/7 and UNSW provides free Counselling and Psychological services .
If you have any questions about any of your marks, please email the class account (se2021@cse.unsw.edu.au). Please do not contact your mentor as we are handling all queries regarding marks centrally.
You've done a lot of reflection throughout the course - but we want you to take one last time to think and be proud of how far you've come and how much you've achieved - you have all come an exceptionally long way from being fresh out of COMP1531 and are now further down the road to becoming a Software Engineer. We're sure that many of you didn't even know you were capable of creating the services and applications you did before the course. Well done.
The Sydney Opera House is an example of impressive physical design and architecture - elegant and long-lasting; and they are the characteristics of software we've sought to write in this course. Just in case you were still curious about the course photo :)
To get you excited, some courses that you will be taking as part of the SE degree in future...
Thank you for being an incredible cohort of students to work with both online and in person - you are all fantastic and will go on to do amazing things. Feel free to stay connected to us virtually via LinkedIn and please come and say hi if you see us on campus!
Finally, we just want to give a shout out to your terrific mentors - Chinmay, Webster, Max, Tina, Giuseppe and Chris - without them this course couldn't function and they have put in many long hours supporting you and providing you with feedback.
All the very best for T2 and beyond.
Fethi, Nick and the SENG2021 22T1 Teaching Team

Hi everyone,
Congratulations to the following groups who have been shortlisted for the Macquarie Second Year Software Engineering Prize.
Well done to everyone on your presentations - it was very close between all the top teams!
Groups selected will need to prepare and present a 4 minute presentation followed by 3 minutes of feedback and questions from the judges. Your presentation will essentially be a shortened version of your Shark Tank pitch - containing:
The presentations will occur in-person at the Macquarie office (50 Martin Place, Wynyard) on the 17th May at 1pm . Selected groups will receive an email from Macquarie with further details.
For everyone - if you haven't already please fill out myExperience - tomorrow is the last day!
We read through every single piece of feedback - positive and constructive, and spend a lot of time thinking about how we can improve the course and how we teach.
We'll be in touch over the holidays with the release of Sprint 4, final project and portfolio marks - but for now we hope you have a bit of respite now everything is wrapped up, and best of luck for your exams!
Hi everyone,
We made it!!! Congratulations on finishing Sprint 4, your Shark Tank presentations and the Final Reports. We were blown away by how good your applications were – from the engaging presentations and business value to fantastic looking frontends and complex functionality – well done on your efforts.
The portfolios are due on Tuesday at 1pm – please post on the forum between now and then if you have any questions.
We think it’s also important to highlight your work in terms of how different this course is structured compared to the first-year COMP courses – rather than being handed content on a silver platter, the onus has been on you to research, learn and make decisions and we’ve been here to support you, as is the case in the real world. It’s certainly a jump and you have all made it with professional maturity.
Please take some time to fill out myExperience – we always want to iterate and improve on how we run the course.
Finally – based on your Sprint 4 Shark Tank Presentations we are selecting several teams to be shortlisted for the Macquarie Second Year Software Engineering Prize. If selected, you will be asked to prepare and present a presentation about your system i n-person on 17 th May at Macquarie to a panel of judges. Attendance is not mandatory if you have clashing commitments, though at least one person from your team will need to be there.
We will notify you of the teams selected this coming Wednesday.
Hi everyone,
Hope you’ve had a nice break! We are almost at the end – and you’ve all done incredibly well making it this far. Sprint 4 is almost done and this week will be an opportunity for you to show your hard work to your peers and mentor – be proud of what you’ve achieved as there are some spectacular pieces of software you have created!
You know how these roll – we just want to remind you of two important points:
Your marks for Sprint 3 have been released and are available to view under the Grades section on WebCMS. If your mark has not yet been finalised then your mentor will have let you know. As always, please speak to your mentor first regarding any queries of marks and then email the class account if you have further concerns.
It’s that time of term! Please fill out myExperience for the course when you have a spare moment amidst what is probably a busy week for most of you :)
Good luck for your presentations this week and assessments in other courses.
Hi everyone,
The draft portfolio marks and feedback have been released.
You can view your mark under the Grades section on WebCMS.
An email will come through to you shortly with your marker's feedback.
If you have any questions about your feedback or mark, please post on the forum or email your marker. You can find your marker's contact information by looking them up in Staff tab here on WebCMS. Please keep in mind that this assessment is only worth 5%, so we are unlikely to change marks unless there is a major reason.
Take the feedback on board and look at the collective feedback page to improve - the final submission is worth 15%.
If you have not received an email please post on the forum.
Have a great evening!
Hi everyone,
Well done on completing your Shark Tank presentations this week – we were all very impressed by your content and delivery.
We have adjusted some of the assessment deadlines to give you a bit more breathing room in some aspects of Sprint 4 and the Final Portfolios – please read carefully:
The draft portfolio marks and feedback are in the process of being finalised and we will release them in the next couple of days – our apologies for the delay.
Have a fantastic Week 9!
Hi everyone,
Today's lecture has been moved to the Rex Vowels Theatre (accessible via ground floor Electrical Engineering or from outside the Quad).
The online option is our usual Friday lecture link from WebCMS.
See you at 11am!
Hi everyone,
The Sprint 4 specification is available to view here .
For now focus on your Shark Tank presentations, and we'll discuss this Sprint in Friday's lecture (a reminder that it'll be in person with an online option). Good luck for your presentations and well done - we're on the home stretch!!!
Hi everyone,
The end of Sprint 3 is almost here – it’s been great to see all the hard work you’ve put in coming together. Keep asking great questions on the forum and good luck for finishing everything in time for the deadline – Monday 1pm . A few updates from us this week.
Our lecture this week is IN PERSON (with an online option) – Friday 11am – 1pm at Colombo Theatre B . It’ll be our last lecture for the course, and we think a good setting to talk about Team Dynamics. So please come down (rain/floods permitting!) and join us on campus.
We will also talk about Sprint 4 and the Final Portfolio submission during Friday’s lecture. There is no lecture on Tuesday .
*Shark Tank music plays* This week during your mentoring sessions you will be presenting your work to your class and assessors. All of the information is in Section 9 of the Sprint 3 specification, but three important points we want to restate:
We are in the process of marking your draft portfolios and providing feedback and are aiming to return them to you towards the end of next week.
Keep up the fantastic work as always and reach out if you need.
Hi everyone,
The end of flex week has crept up on us already – we hope you’ve had some time to make some solid headway on Sprint 3, but more importantly to get some rest, recharge and recuperate. We’re over the halfway point of the course!
Your Sprint 2 marks are available on the Grades page on WebCMS. Your mentor will provide you with written feedback for the Sprint in coming days if they haven't already.
If you have any questions regarding your marks, please email your mentor. If you still have further concerns after corresponding with your mentor, you can forward the email chain to se2021@cse.unsw.edu.au . Any reviews of results may result in your mark going up or down.
Reflection is a major theme in this course – individually with your blog posts and portfolios each week, and in your team meetings and sprint retrospectives. If you haven’t already, now is a good point to sit down with your team and ask the question – what can each of us do better for the team? Remember as always to keep your tutor in the loop about issues as they arise and progress.
We are marking the draft portfolios – some fantastic content displayed in several of them, so well done on your efforts! We are aiming to wrap up the marking in the next week or so to give you time to take on the feedback and improve for the final submission in Week 10.
We hope that Sprint 3 is progressing well – and encourage you to work smarter rather than harder and invest time into the areas of assessment worth the most. The marking criteria are a good place to look for this.
We expect that the MVP you display in the demo is functional, but only needs to be a prototype with a core feature or two implemented.
Please also take note of this spec update – remember to clearly document the other groups APIs you are using. If you haven’t already, submit the form for your API to be published and used by others.
This coming week, we have a guest lecture on Software Quality Management & Assurance from Tyro on Tuesday 11am – 12pm . This will be particularly helpful as we move into Sprint 4 when we start to consider quality more broadly for your applications. There is no lecture on Friday .
We are always looking for ways to improve the course – myExperience is excellent for this, but if you think of anything at any point, this form (also linked in WebCMS sidebar) is always open and we welcome any constructive feedback warmly.
See you in Week 7!
The lecture starts in 4 minutes :)
See you soon...
Hi everyone,
Sprint 1 - your marks are now available under the Grades section on WebCMS.
If you have any questions regarding your marks, please email your mentor. If you still have further concerns after corresponding with your mentor, you can forward the email chain to se2021@cse.unsw.edu.au. Any reviews of results may result in your mark going up or down.
Sprint 2
- a huge congratulations on finishing it!! You have all done incredibly well to go from zero to an MVP in just two weeks - and it's great to see all of the reflective blog posts which show how far you've come in just a month.
Sprint 3
-
the specification is available here
. We will talk through it in tomorrow's lecture. It's due
Monday, Week 8
- so you have
3 weeks
this time.
Hi everyone,
End of Week 4! Well done on (almost!) reaching the end of Sprint 2 – it has been great to see all your fantastic questions and engagement on the forums and in mentoring sessions. Updates from us:

Hi everyone,
Not too much from us this week – we hope that Sprint 2 is progressing well.
Some quick points:
Please keep your mentor in the loop about how things are going – remember we are looking for a proactive approach to resolving problems as they arise.
It’s also important to keep in mind that Sprint 2 is simply an MVP of the service – it doesn’t have to be perfect and you will have the opportunity to build on and improve what you’ve created in the remainder of the project.
And remember to have fun as well :) while it may be daunting and challenging we want this to be an interesting and insightful dive into building an API for yourselves from the ground up.
See you next week on the forum + in mentoring!
A reminder that we have a lecture today at 5pm !
See you soon :)
Hi everyone,
Well done on finishing Sprint 1!
The Sprint 2 specification is now available here . We will discuss it in tomorrow's lecture. In the meantime, please post on the forum if you have any questions.
Please fill out this short declaration form detailing your Git provider and username . We have to collect this information since you will be working on repositories which aren't hosted by UNSW and have an obligation to ensure academic integrity. We will only use this data for assessment purposes.
See you at 11 for the security lecture :)
Hi everyone,
End of Week 2 - and the Sprint 1 deadline is right around the corner. Make sure you have everything wrapped up and put on Confluence + Jira by tomorrow (Monday) 1pm .
The Sprint 2 specification will be released on Tuesday morning.
During this week's mentoring you'll take your mentor through parts of your Sprint 1 submission and receive some initial feedback, which you should take on board and improve on for Sprint 2. You'll also have a chance to discuss Sprint 2.
A friendly reminder to remember to do your blog for Week 2!! (We'll stop reminding you after this week). It has been truly inspiring to see so many of you comment on each other's posts and share your experiences and thoughts - keep up the great work, and if you feel comfortable make your post public for others to read and enjoy.
You can view the full portfolio specification here . The draft is due Friday Week 5, 5pm .
Good luck for the finish - keep asking great questions and we look forward to seeing what you produce!
Hi everyone,
This is a reminder that we have a Guest Lecture from AWS today at 11am via our normal MS Teams link.
We unfortunately cannot record this lecture due to AWS constraints , so it's worth attending live if you can.
This is a link to a Google Doc where we will take notes from the lecture that will be accessible to anyone afterwards, for those that can't attend.
See you at 11am!
Hi everyone,
We’ve made it through Week 1 – well done! We hope you’re finding your feet in the course, have had the chance to meet your team and are excited for the weeks ahead as we dive head first into the project.
Everyone should be in a group by now. If you do not have a group, please email your mentor ASAP . Each mentor has an assigned service category, which is the API your group will be designing and building. If you’re not sure which service category you are completing, please ask your mentor or post on the forum.
We have LOTS of lectures in Week 2 from various guest presenters to help you with understanding APIs, software stacks and microservice architecture. Here is the lecture schedule for next week:
Your team should now have an assigned 20 minute time slot each week to check-in with your mentor - which starts this week . If you don't have an assigned time yet, your mentor will reach out shortly.
You have everything you need to make a start on Sprint 1 – it’s due Monday Week 3, 1pm . If you have any questions about the assessment and what’s required, be sure to check out the Week 1 Lectures or post on the forum! If you have any questions regarding your service category specification itself, you can make a comment on the respective Confluence page, post on the forum, or ask your mentor.
You should have received an email inviting you to your team’s Atlassian instance , which includes a Jira board and Confluence space. If you haven’t, please post on the forum.
There are a few Help Sessions for the Atlassian toolchain in Weeks 2, 3 and 4
which you can access on this page
.
It's been fantastic to see everyone's blogs!! If you haven't done it already make sure to write one up tonight / early tomorrow. You can read more information about the weekly blogging here . A full specification for the portfolio will be released on Monday .
If you're feeling a degree of nervousness about the weeks ahead - know that while a lot of this course is self and team-driven, we're here supporting you every step of the way - so please always feel free to reach out.
See you in Week 2!!
Hi everyone,
For those who are interested, Rob Pike is presenting a Guest Lecture for SENG3011 tomorrow titled "Lessons in Software Engineering" from 4pm - 5pm which is open to you as well. Rob is a member of the CSE Industry Advisory Board, and is one of the designers of the Go Programming language.
This lecture is completely optional, and not on course content
- though what he will have to say will definitely be of relevance to the principles of Software Engineering this workshop directly and indirectly touches on.
You can join via this Zoom link .
Password: 733902
You can read more about Rob Pike here
if you are interested.
Hi everyone!
SENG2021 is for many the first Software Engineering specific course that you'll be taking in your degree - and it'll be an exciting dive together into the wonderful world of Software Engineering - you'll get the chance to apply your knowledge from first year CSE courses in this workshop and explore a whole lot of new and interesting concepts as well!
We highly encourage you to take some time to read the Course Outline , as it highlights everything you need to know about what the course will involve.
There are two major assessment components:
Please remember that it’s extremely normal to be put into groups with people you might not already know, and things have a high chance of going fine. And for those that inevitably have some difficulties with group work, we have a series of measures in place to ensure that all assessment is both supportive and fair.
There are two in-person classes, both of which still have free spots if you wish to make a last minute change and study on campus.
If you are taking a class in person, please do not come to campus if you feel unwell or have any COVID symptoms . Just email your tutor and cc se2021@cse.unsw.edu.au and we will make sure you are put into a group.
See you tomorrow!!!

Hi everyone!
Welcome to SENG2021, Requirements & Design Workshop for 2022 Term 1.
We will give a more formal overview and introduction next week and leave you to enjoy the last week of your holidays for now :) but we suggest you have a read of the Course Outline which gives an in-depth overview of the course structure, outcomes and assessment.
To help both you and us with planning, there are two main points we want to highlight early:
We are in the process of organising a few F2F classes. If you wish to attend a F2F class, please fill out the following poll. The time/s you select don't have to be aligned with your current tutorial time slot on myUNSW.
Please note that at this point we are just polling preferences - we will let you know the times once the classes have been created and you will be able to enrol yourself on myUNSW. Depending on availability and demand we may not be able to offer F2F classes at all of the times listed on the poll.
Here is a link to the poll , which will close at 10am on Tuesday 8th February (Week 0) .
The course is centred around a group software development project,
completed in groups of 4 - 5
.
It's a requirement that your group is comprised of people enrolled in the same tutorial time slot
.
If you are in a F2F class, then your entire group will need to be enrolled in the F2F class.
From Week 2 onwards, you will have a 20 minute project check-in with your tutor during your timetabled weekly tutorial time slot.
In Week 1, you will need to be present for the 2 hours your class is scheduled for.
The Week 1 class time will give you a chance to get to know your peers and find people to form a group, and groups will be formed during that time. You can also look for people to join a group with via the course forum !
We're looking forward to what's going to be a great term ahead! If you have any questions, please post them on the forum or email se2021@cse.unsw.edu.au.
