  • You only have time till tonight to fill in myExperience | We are now at 41.98% !

Posted by Armin Chitizadeh Tuesday 16 April 2024, 04:12:48 PM, last modified Wednesday 24 April 2024, 02:22:12 PM.

    Update:

    * myExperience's deadline is tonight !!!!!!
    * 68 students have filled the survey
    * 93 have not.

    Summary of this post:

I know you are busy, so here is the summary:

Your feedback throughout the term helped us to improve the course. With the help of your feedback, we were able to not only adjust the course, but also secure extra budget to keep the edForum, technical consultations, and self-learning resources going. You had a great impact on this course, and now it's time to make a university-wide impact by filling out the myExperience survey.

    https://myexperience.unsw.edu.au/

I've set a goal of 75% participation rate, with a UNSW-approved reward for reaching that target.

The myExperience survey is now open

The myExperience survey is now open for students to fill out. This is a fully confidential student survey, and your identity will not be included in the final report. This survey is extremely important for the university, as the results have a significant impact on the decisions made by the university. Your feedback from throughout the term has been heard and has helped us improve the course. Now is the time for you to make a university-wide impact for your future and the future of other students.

    The University Listens to You

Based on feedback from last year and throughout this term, I have added a few things to the course, such as the edForum, self-learning resources, and technical help session consultations. These additions come at a cost to the university, and our initial budget for the course was limited. We ran these additions for two weeks as an experiment and asked for your feedback, which we listened to and used to improve them. Some feedback were positive. I used all your anonymous feedback to create two cases, which I presented to the school, and they happily increased our budget by around $20,000 to cover the cost of the edForum, self-learning resources, and technical help sessions for the rest of the term. I wanted to share this with you to let you know that the university listens to you. Your opinion matters. If you want to see these changes applied throughout your degree in other courses or even throughout the university, we need your feedback through the myExperience survey. I may not be here in the future, but your feedback can have a lasting impact on UNSW's policies for many years.

    Participation Matters

Low participation in the myExperience survey is considered a bad result from the university's perspective. For example, if only 20 students out of 160 fill out the survey and say the course was amazing, the university may conclude that the lack of participation means the changes were not well-received, and they may stop these improvements. So, if you think your mentors, technical consultations, edForum, self-learning resources, and the course overall were good, or if there are things we should consider for the next term, please fill out the myExperience survey. To make a significant impact, we need a 75% participation rate. I was thinking of setting a prize if we reach this goal, but the university has informed me that extending deadlines, adding extra marks, or giving money to students would be considered bribery, which is not allowed.

    Participation Goal!

Please head to our edForum's post to know more about the the participation goal. EdForum post:

  • Your feedback and our response | Technical help sessions | Team evaluation | Grace's technical help session is happening now

Posted by Armin Chitizadeh Monday 01 April 2024, 10:02:37 PM, last modified Monday 01 April 2024, 10:04:25 PM.

    Hello students,

The number of responses this week was great. Some of the feedback was similar, so I am grouping them into the following categories:

    = Technical Help Sessions

    * Please hold more help sessions on deployment and/or coding

    * I have benefitted largely from technical help sessions from all my other courses. It would be highly beneficial to myself, and my peers, for more technical help sessions that are held weekly (e.g. multiple one hour sessions throughout the week, each week). Thanks!

    * Chloe and Jacqueline were very helpful in helping me through the process of setting up our teams frontend!

    * Jacqueline was so helpful, I was really struggling to understand how to connect the backend with the frontend but she walked me through it slowly and helped me understand the whole process well. Thank you so much Jacqueline, you are a lifesaver!

    * Very helpful with backend

    Our Response:

These technical help sessions were added to the course this year, and it's great to see that many students are benefiting from them. Your feedback is extremely valuable in helping us shape the course.

The university really values your feedback. These sessions were added throughout the term when some of you requested them. In our initial budget, we only had enough funding for one week of these sessions. However, based on your feedback that the university found valuable, the budget for these sessions was increased.

You can find the link and schedule for each session here: https://webcms3.cse.unsw.edu.au/SENG2021/24T1/resources/97113. In fact, there is a session happening right now from 9pm-11pm today, led by Grace:
    https://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19:mee...
The Hopper Code is GUQB .

    = Peer Review Form

    * i want them send a form to everyone in the team about who did the more work than the other, because we don't want to tell the teacher who did more work we want to do it with like a form like 1531 and the teacher can scale it up and down based on the commit.

    Our Response:

Thank you for the feedback. After each deadline, I do provide a link to a "Team Evaluation" form. However, I agree that I need to make it easier to access. I have now added the link to the Team Evaluation form on the left-hand menu. You can also access it directly from the link below:

    https://forms.office.com/r/V6jgRdHMkL

Our goal is to support all students so they can contribute the most within their teams. If there is an issue with unequal contributions, the form is there for you to fill out. Once the form is filled, we will spend time evaluating each case. I believe in a fair mark adjustment, which can only be achieved by thoroughly evaluating each case by talking with the mentor, looking at contributions to GitHub and Jira, and even interviewing team members if needed.

= Help Sessions Before Sprint 3 Deadline

    * Can we have more help sessions on Monday and Tuesday before Sprint 3 is due?
    * Add more help sessions on monday and tuesday before sprint 3 is due

    Our Response:
We have announced this yesterday. There is a session happening right now from 9pm-11pm today, led by Grace:

    https://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19:mee...
The Hopper Code is GUQB .

I will review any new feedback next Monday and provide my responses. You can leave anonymous feedback using the following link:

  • Your feedback for week2 and our response

Posted by Armin Chitizadeh Tuesday 12 March 2024, 10:55:42 PM.

    Dear students,

Every Monday, I review all the feedback you have provided through the feedback form. For this week, there was only one feedback.

    Student feedback:
"worst course expierence by far, first of all the confluence space didnt work until like the last 4 days of the due date, then for github class rooms right it kept on saying i have no access and stuff and when i get access i get assigned to the wrong classroom. This course's management is so bad please fix these errors please"

    Our response:
Thank you for sharing your feedback. I'm sorry to hear that you've had a difficult experience with the course so far. aim to address your concerns by breaking them down into specific sections.

    • Confluence and Jira: Atlassian provides Confluence and Jira to us. They gather student and group information to create Jira and Confluence for our teams. Unfortunately, there is not much we can do for this term but we asked them for future year to provide these services to our students faster.
    • GitHub: Similar to Confluence, we require team details first, causing delays in creating GitHub teams. To improve this process for future years, we will offer additional guidelines on setting up GitLab for students so they can have more options.
    • Incorrect GitHub classroom assignment: This was an unfortunate error that should not have occurred. There may have been various reasons for this issue. I have seen one or two cases this term which were solved by our teams on ed Forum. Based on my experience, the team behind answering ed forum questions are doing a great job. I want to thank them for their great help in this course.

If you encounter any issues, please notify us promptly, and we will work to resolve them as soon as we can.Just today through one of our mentors, similar to the case above, we were notified that a team can not create a seperate repo on their GitHub. This should not happen based on our setup. So we provided some possible solutions to the mentor so he can share them with his teams.

This is just a general advice. As we are in week 5, for any problem, it is advisable to be proactive. If you encounter an issue, please inform us promptly so we can solve it as soon as we can. If you have a solution in mind, please share it with your mentor. If it works for you then it is a great solution.

You can leave your anonymous feedback using the link below and I will review them and share our reponse:

In the past, mentors had to share marks with each student individually, but since last year, we have created a kind of "script" that emails grades directly to each student. It speeds up the process and makes it easier for our mentors. However, there may be a slight delay of a few minutes. If you do not receive your mark via email by the end of Sunday, please email us at se2021@cse.unsw.edu.au .

    Wish you the best,
    Armin

  • Sprint3 Deadline | Deployment Videos

Posted by Armin Chitizadeh Friday 01 March 2024, 12:55:41 PM, last modified Friday 01 March 2024, 12:56:00 PM.

    Hello everyone,

We have implemented two changes this year to enhance the student experience. This post is about them:

    • Sprint3 Deadline: In previous years, specifications were released sequentially. For instance, sprint2 specs were issued right after sprint1 due date. This year, we have opted to release all specifications at the beginning of the term to provide students with a comprehensive view of the project. While we have made every effort to ensure accuracy, errors can still occur. A fellow student brought to our attention that this year's sprint3 deadline coincides with a public holiday. We appreciate this student for notifying us. At UNSW, deadlines cannot fall on public holidays; hence, we have extended the sprint3 deadline to Tuesday, 2nd April (Week 8) at 1 pm.

    • Deployment Videos: The primary focus of this course is "Design", with deployment serving as a feedback mechanism. Deployment constitutes a minor aspect of the course, and teams can pass without deploying their API and program online. However, sharing your API allows for feedback from others and enhances your API through user interaction. Also, it is gratifying to witness others using and enjoying your creation. Last year, students encountered challenges with deploying their API and product. Consequently, we have introduced a more comprehensive AWS lecture and developed additional educational resources, accessible through "Self Learning Resources":

    https://webcms3.cse.unsw.edu.au/SENG2021/24T1/reso...

It is important to note that although we have provided extra educational resources for deployment, it is not the critical component of this course; our emphasis remains on Design. Detailed coverage of deployment will be in SENG3011.

To reiterate, deployment is not mandatory to pass the course; there are alternative methods to showcase your creation to your mentor for evaluation. Your primary focus in this course should be on design; deployment serves to enhance feedback and overall quality. Given the ease of deployment nowadays, it is worthwhile trying it. It can also be a great start for your learning journey for SENG3011.

please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
    Wishing you a fantastic Friday,

    Armin Chitizadeh

  • A Friendly Guide to GitHub Classroom Access

Posted by Mingqin Yu Wednesday 28 February 2024, 06:35:48 PM.

    Hi all,

I hope your group projects are going well and that you're enjoying the teamwork experience.

I'd like to offer a friendly reminder about accessing GitHub Classroom for your assignments. It's essential to follow each step carefully to set up your repositories correctly. This includes signing in with SSO, linking your course ID to your GitHub account, and ensuring that you correctly choose your name and the appropriate team on GitHub.

Please remember, the majority of access issues are due to not following the provided instructions carefully. If you encounter any problems, double-check that you've completed all steps correctly. Pay special attention to any error messages, following the links they provide, and authenticate as required, preferably with an SSH key.

We're here to support you, so please feel free to reach out to your tutor or myself if you need any help or have questions.

Looking forward to seeing all your great work.

    Best,

    Ming

  • If your team functions well and all members agree that each person contributed equally, you can disregard this post. This post is about team evaluation.

Posted by Armin Chitizadeh Wednesday 28 February 2024, 01:22:14 PM.

    Dear students,

This post is about team evaluation. If your team functions well and all members agree that each person contributed equally, you can disregard this post; there is no need to take any action. By default, every team member will receive the same mark as everyone in the team.

However, if there are disagreements that cannot be resolved within your team, we suggest reaching out to your mentor. Your mentor will make every effort to address the issue. If the problem persists, please feel free to email me. If the issue remains unresolved by the submission deadline, we advise you to complete the form provided at the following link:

    https://forms.office.com/r/V6jgRdHMkL

The form is same for all sprints.

Each conflict will be assessed individually. This form assists us in gaining a comprehensive understanding of the situation. Upon completion, we will also seek input from your mentor. If further clarification is needed, team members may be interviewed. Once all necessary information is gathered, any required mark adjustments among team members will be made.

This adjustment is a new addition this year to resolve conflicts more efficiently during the term.

    Kind regards,
    Armin

  • Let's Get Our GitHub Classroom Rolling! 🚀

Posted by Mingqin Yu Tuesday 27 February 2024, 01:40:57 PM.

    Hi everyone,

I hope you're all diving deep into the course and enjoying your team projects! We've added a new tool to our kit to boost our adventure: GitHub Classroom. It's going to make our collaboration even smoother.

I've already added all your zIDs to our GitHub Classroom, which is decked out and ready for you at cseteaching-unsw-edu-au-classroom-SENG2021 24T1.

Here's the link: [ https://classroom.github.com/a/ua3qzrj4 ]( https://classroom.github.com/a/ua3qzrj4 ). Jump in using your GitHub account. If you haven't got one, no worries—it's quick and easy to set up. Just make sure you link it to your zID so everything syncs up perfectly.

Once you're in, you'll get to accept the "Invoice SENG2021 24T1" assignment by joining your team (if it is already created) or creating your team (if it is not yet created) . Remember, the team name should match the one your mentor and Confluence with your lab codes prefix (like "F14AWatermelon" for the F14A lab).

Don't forget to nominate a "Maintainer" in your team—someone who can manage the roster, adding or waving goodbye to members as needed.

We are looking forward to seeing all the amazing things you'll achieve in the upcoming sprints.

    Cheers,

    Ming

  • There were some questions around "weekly blog posts", so I wanted to address them here:

Posted by Armin Chitizadeh Tuesday 27 February 2024, 12:05:10 AM.

    Hello everyone,

There were some questions around "weekly blog posts", so I wanted to address them here:

    • Marking: All your "weekly blogging" will be marked later in the term, at the same time as your portfolio.
    • More details on what is considered to be a good weekly blog post: For more detailed information on what constitutes a good weekly blog post, please refer to our Confluence space at the following links:

    https://unswcse.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/se202124t1/pages/347537410/Portfolio

    https://unswcse.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/se202124t1/pages/347537451

Your mentor does not mark your blog posts every week through out the term. However, as with everything in this course, it is important to be proactive. If you are unsure about how to enhance your blog posts, do not hesitate to seek guidance from your mentors; they are more than willing to assist you.

Looking forward to seeing you at our Tuesday lecture.

    Best regards,
    Armin

  • hands-on tutorials on AWS services

Posted by Armin Chitizadeh Wednesday 21 February 2024, 12:29:03 PM.

    Dear students,

Tai, the AWS technical trainer from our yesterday's lecture, has shared some amazing resources. These are great resources if you are interested to use AWS on your project. Below is the email he sent with all the links:

    "Hi Armin,

I’ve assembled some resources the students can use if they’re interested in some hands-on tutorials with the services.

Firstly, this link that I shared during the presentation: https://aws.amazon.com/free/webapps/

It has an overview of the services we covered, and some links to hands-on tutorials down at the bottom.

Here is also another comparison of the services: https://aws.amazon.com/websites/

If they’re creating personal AWS accounts, they can use select services for the first 12-months as explained here https://aws.amazon.com/free/

If they’re worried about costs, they can look at this Tutorial and set up Budgets on their accounts https://aws.amazon.com/getting-started/hands-on/control-your-costs-free-tier-budgets/

Static Website using Amazon S3 & CloudFront

Deploying a LAMP stack on Amazon Lightsail

Deploying an app using AWS Elastic Beanstalk

Build a Basic Web App with AWS Amplify

For those using Amplify, there is also a dedicated Dev Center, with official video tutorials they can follow: https://amplify.aws/learn/

  • Optional Short Videos

Posted by Armin Chitizadeh Wednesday 21 February 2024, 12:14:21 PM.

    Dear students,

This year, in addition to our regular formal lectures, we are creating educational videos to help you get started. These videos are optional and are intended to provide extra support if you need it. Think of them as a supplement, like vitamins. You can access the videos through the Self Learning Resources on the left menu, where you will find links to both YouTube and One Drive. Feel free to use whichever platform you prefer.

I want to express my gratitude to two of our wonderful mentors, Chloe Toh and Jacqueline Chen, for producing two videos called "More on Stack Architecture" and "Open API Specification and Swagger" and Chris Joy for creating the Jira and Confluence demo video.

We hope you find these videos helpful, and we would be delighted to hear your feedback on them.

  • Tuesday February 20th Lecture: Deploying Your API and Application on AWS - 1:00pm-3:00pm | As requested by Amazon, this lecture will not be recorded

Posted by Armin Chitizadeh Monday 19 February 2024, 10:52:44 PM.

    Dear Students,

We have a long lecture scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, February 20th, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The session will be conducted by Tai Tan from the AWS technical training team and will focus on deploying your API and application on AWS. At this course, you have the freedom to choose your own way of deploying API and application for your project. Deploying on AWS can be an option.

Please note that due to Amazon's policy, the session cannot be recorded. However, they will share relevant links and possibly the presentation slides, so it is highly recommended that you attend. Attending in person is ideal as Tai Tan will be available afterwards to address any questions you may have. For those unable to attend in person, I have requested an IT hybrid option, which, if successful, will allow you to watch the live lecture on echo360. Please be aware that the on echo360 live lecture link will replace the recording as per AWS's request.

Tai Tan is an alumnus of UNSW. He initially joined AWS as a Cloud Architect Intern before taking on the role of Technical Trainer at Amazon Web Services. He is a passionate engineer who enjoys learning, problem-solving, and designing impactful solutions.

We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday.

  • Your feedback for week1 and my responses

Posted by Armin Chitizadeh Monday 19 February 2024, 07:42:19 AM.

    Dear students,

Every Monday, I review all the feedback you have provided through the feedback form. Below are your feedback for week1 and my responses:

    1. Student feedback: Nice and Clear

    * Thanks :)

    2. Student feedback: Slow

    * I would appreciate more explanation so that I can adjust accordingly in future lectures. Was it the pace of my presentation or the content? I usually show my presentation to one person for feedback, but I will make sure to seek feedback from more people before the lecture.

    3. Student feedback: I personally (Since I transferred to UNSW a term prior) felt that it was a bit difficult to understand all the different websites and things to go through, if there was one website/platform for all info exchange it would be helpful.

*I understand and agree with your point. We have tried different platforms, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. We have attempted to connect the entire course through webCMS, which should be the starting point. We had edForum, Confluence on webCMS menu, I just added a new item called "Echo360(Lecture Recordings). I think it is a bit easier now to access the lecture recordings. I really wished I could only use one platform but this is the best combination that I have tried and worked well with both students and teaching team. Thanks for the feedback

    4. Student feedback: "Hi, I just wanted to share a quick feedback on the way in which my mentor decided to split up our teams in Tuesday's 11 to 1pm tutorial. I was disappointed on being asked to just form a group ourselves. It is mainly because many students did not know each other and we ended up randomly forming teams based on the table we were seated at.
I think this could have been way way better had the tutor prepared a google form or a similar tool to get each person's strength and what they wish to contribute to the team and collectively bring a mix of people with different responsibilities into a group just like they did in COMP1531. Hopefully this could be an improvement for next year!
    Thank you"

    * What you suggested which is using a Google form or a similar tool to understand each person's strengths and contributions is a great idea. I will implement this approach next year.

Thank you all for your feedback. Next Monday, I will review new feedback and provide my responses. You can leave your anonymous feedback using the following link:

  • Accessing Nick's lecture

Posted by Armin Chitizadeh Friday 16 February 2024, 11:20:47 PM.

    Hello everyone,

Today's lecture was recorded in two formats: Teams and Echo360. I checked them both, Echo360 was the better option for today's lecture. To access the Echo360 recording, you can use the same method as other lecture recordings through Moodle.

I have also included the links to both sets of slides on our Lecture Schedule page.

Nick's lecture today was excellent. He covered various aspects of Project Management, including Agile Fundamentals and Requirements Engineering. There were so many important points that were covered, to keep it short, I decided to pick three topics that Nick talked about and summarise them here:

1.Problem-Solution Approach: Before implementing new technology, it's essential to first identify the problem and then use technology to solve it. Consider the value that the new technology adds.

2.Pair Programming: This is highly important. Avoid the mistake of having programmers check their own code due to time constraints, as it can lead to increased costs and time consumption. Always prioritise pair programming.

3.Documentation: It is crucial for future-proofing the organisation and individual work. Trusting memory alone can lead to inefficiencies. Proper documentation, doesn't have to be perfect, can significantly reduce the time spent on re-reading and understanding previous work.

There are many other interesting topics that Nick covered, and I strongly recommend watching the lecture if you missed it.

    Kind regards,
    Armin

We strive to bring the best in the field to provide you with relevant guest lectures from our industry partners. Nick Patrikeos, a software engineer at Atlassian and a former student and teaching member of SENG2021, will be delivering a lecture on Agile Project Management. Due to his limited availability and our commitment to ensuring you have all the necessary resources on time to start your project, we have decided to schedule a one-time lecture on Friday. His lecture will take place on Friday, February 16th, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at K-H20-G1 - CivEng G1 , located in the Civil Engineering building at UNSW.

As we understand that some students may not be able to attend this lecture, we will record the session so that you can watch it at your convenience.

  • Welcome to SENG2021, Requirements & Design Workshop for 2024 Term1

    Hello everyone!

Welcome to SENG2021, Requirements & Design Workshop for 2024 Term1!

We will give a more formal overview and introduction on today's lecture from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.
You can find more information here:
    https://timetable.unsw.edu.au/2024/SENG2021.html#S1-7669

At the meantime, we suggest you have a read of the Course Outline which gives an in-depth overview of the course structure, outcomes and assessment.

To help both you and us with planning, there are a few points we want to highlight:

    1. Class Structure + Group Formation

The course is centred around a group software development project, completed in groups of 4 - 5 .

It's a requirement that your group is comprised of people enrolled in the same tutorial time slot . If for any reason you need to form a team across more than one tutorial, please email us se2021@cse.unsw.edu.au .

In Week 1, you will need to be present for the 2 hours your class is scheduled for

The Week 1 class time will give you a chance to get to know your peers and find people to form a group, and groups will be formed during that time.

From Week 2 onwards, you will have a 20 minute project check-in with your tutor during your timetabled weekly tutorial time slot.

    2. If you are overseas and can not be in Sydney on Week1

UNSW is expecting all students to attend in-person classes. For this reason we only have official in-person tutorial sessions. However, we understand some students might not be able to come to Sydney at the start of term1 2024. To solve this issue, we are going to create a form for students who are overseas at the moment to fill. With this form we can help students who are overseas to form teams. The form link https://forms.office.com/r/C2WJUcmCDd .

    3. Lectures will be in-person this year! We will live stream them too.

Lectures will be held in person. On Mondays the lecture runs from 1 4:00 to 16:00 at E19 Patricia O'Shane 103 (K-E19-103) and On Tuesdays the lecture runs from 13:00 to 15:00 at E19 Patricia O'Shane 105 (K-E19-105) . We don't have lectures every week - we will let you know prior to the week ahead which days we have lectures.

We would love it if you please please please all came to the lectures in person! For students who can not, lectures will be recorded on echo360.

    4. For any question related to the project, feel free to ask your mentor, tutor. For anything else, feel free to email us
