Posted by John Shepherd Tuesday 01 December 2015, 10:47:30 AM, last modified Sunday 06 December 2015, 05:50:17 PM.

The results will be released on Friday.

If you're eligible for a Supp Exam, you'll be receiving email from me today. If you don't receive email, then you either have a clear pass or a clear fail. The Supp Exam is on Wednesday 9th December at 8.45am (reading time), then 9-12 (working time). If you are offered a Supp and don't attend, then you get as your final mark whatever you've accumulated so far.

I am very busy this week (preparing accreditation material so that your degrees will remain as accredited Engineering degrees, and doing the Supps). If you have marks queries, ask me after December 14.

  • Exam Arrangements

Posted by John Shepherd Wednesday 04 November 2015, 06:49:10 AM, last modified Wednesday 04 November 2015, 06:52:12 AM.

Exam "seating" information is now available. If you're in the morning session, you'll have a lab and seat in that lab. If you're in the afternoon session, you'll have an assembly room (aka "holding room"); you'll be given your lab/seat in your assembly room. Make sure you arrive in plenty of time (i.e. leave home early on the day of the exam).

Let me (jas@cse) know ASAP if you sent me a preference and were not allocated to your preferred session.

  • Assignment Coasting

Posted by John Shepherd Thursday 29 October 2015, 01:20:39 PM.

To all those students who made no/minimal contribution to their team's efforts on Assignment 2 ... once I return from the US, I will be in touch asking for an explanation. An unsatisfactory explanation means that some/all of your marks for the Assignment will be taken and given to the people who actually did the work.

  • Finalising Coursework Marks

Posted by John Shepherd Thursday 29 October 2015, 11:04:45 AM.

We're slowly moving towards finalising your coursework marks (labs, quizzes, assignments, etc.). This is going to be slowed down somewhat by the fact that I'll be overseas (at a conference) from Fri 30 Oct until Wed 11 Nov. While I'm away, I can do some things (e.g. write scripts to compute lab marks (incl bonus) and Tournament marks), but these marks won't be uploaded to where you can see them until I return. In the meantime, your tutors should be finishing off entering lab and assignment marks, and these will be uploaded to where they'll be visible in WebCMS. In the meantime, Happy Revising.

  • Week 13

Posted by John Shepherd Monday 19 October 2015, 01:55:11 PM.

There are tutes and labs in Week 13 (Oct 26-30). Tutes will cover hashing, heaps, some exam discussion, review on the course, and a party (if your tutor wants). Week 13 Labs will be a practice Prac Exam. This won't be marked, but will give you a chance to see the environment you will be using in the Final Exam, and use it on a lab machine with time constraints.

  • COMP1927 Exam Times

Posted by John Shepherd Tuesday 13 October 2015, 11:38:22 AM.

There will be two exam sessions for COMP1927 on Monday 16 November. Each student sits one of these sessions. The morning session is 9.30-12.45 (including reading time at the start). The afternoon session requires you to assemble at 12.30; the actual exam is 1.15-4.30 (including reading time at the start). We will be randomly allocating people to either the morning or afternoon and will post the allocations (including which lab you should go to) by the end of Week 13. If you have a compelling reason to take either morning or afternoon (e.g. clash with some other exam), send me email (jas@cse.unsw.edu.au) and we'll arrange it.

  • Quiz 4

Posted by John Shepherd Sunday 04 October 2015, 04:11:51 PM.

The fourth quiz (on shortest-paths and trees) is now available. You must complete it before 11:59pm this Friday (October 9).

  • Mon 5 Oct Public Holiday

Posted by John Shepherd Friday 02 October 2015, 12:12:58 PM.

Monday (Oct 5) is a University holiday, so there are no classes. If you have your tute/lab on Monday, go to any other tute/lab which has room for this week only.

  • Assignment 2: The Hunt

Posted by John Shepherd Thursday 01 October 2015, 07:59:17 PM, last modified Thursday 01 October 2015, 10:33:50 PM.

The Hunt is on. Basic Views are available, if you didn't get them working for Phase 1. You can now submit your AIs for the test tournaments. Submit something now, even if it's dumb and basic. Submitting something for the test tournaments doesn't affect your marks, but gives you a chance to see what the logs look like. There is also a dryrun that plays your Hunter against your Dracula. Look under Assignments for all the details.

  • Quiz 3 Deadline Extended

Posted by John Shepherd Saturday 26 September 2015, 07:54:10 AM.

Ooops ... I told everyone the quiz deadline was midnight, but set it to11pm ... sorry to the people who decided to do the quiz at 11.30pm and found it was closed (although you know what we always tell you about leaving things to the last minute). I've re-opened Quiz 3 until 11:59pm tonight ... I hope.

  • Admin Requests

Posted by John Shepherd Friday 25 September 2015, 03:33:23 PM, last modified Friday 25 September 2015, 03:33:51 PM.

If you have an admin request (e.g. asking for an extension, etc.), send me email ( jas@cse.unsw.edu.au ) rather than posting a message on the WebCMS site.

  • Ambiguities in Phase 1

Posted by John Shepherd Thursday 24 September 2015, 06:18:48 PM.

There have been questions in the messages on Phase 1 which raise some points where the comments in the code and the description on the web are ambiguous (inconsistent or unclear). I'm noting all these comments (which strangely were not raised last year for me to fix them) and will make sure that the tests we use for auto-marking don't involve any cases where the result is ambiguous. The auto-marking tests will largely be the same as the ones in testXxxView, with any ambiguous cases removed, and any new tests avoiding the ambiguous cases.

  • Dryrun for FoD Phase 1

Posted by John Shepherd Monday 21 September 2015, 01:45:00 PM.

There's now a dryrun for FoD Phase 1. Details on its use are near the end of the Phase 1 description.

  • FoD Phase 2

Posted by John Shepherd Monday 21 September 2015, 10:00:58 AM, last modified Monday 21 September 2015, 10:04:34 AM.

The spec (or most of it) for Phase 2 of the Assignment is now available. It will be added to over the next week.

  • Quiz 3

Posted by John Shepherd Sunday 20 September 2015, 10:42:39 PM.

The third quiz (on Graphs) is now available. You must complete it before 11:59pm this Friday (September 25). Same deadline as Assignment 2 Phase 1.

  • view2.zip

Posted by John Shepherd Friday 18 September 2015, 12:22:11 AM, last modified Friday 18 September 2015, 12:26:10 AM.

I've made a new ZIP file containing minor mods to the Views, which hopefully fix all the problems reported in the bug fixes section. My suggestion for how to use this ZIP:

    • download it from above link
    • assume that the directory containing your Assignment 2 code is called ass2
    • make a new directory next to it called eg. ass2a
    • unzip the view2.zip file into the directory ass2a
    • run the command diff -r ass2 ass2a
    • note the differences and apply them to your code in ass2
    • remove ass2a
    • keep working on the assignment

I'll set up the dryrun on the weekend (no time on Friday with an all-day academic retreat for CSE staff ... which means that I'll be "off the air" all day Friday).

  • Furry of Dracula Groups

Posted by John Shepherd Thursday 17 September 2015, 08:52:56 AM.

If you haven't created your FoD group in WebCMS yet, please do so ASAP. Until you have a group, you can't be credited with marks for any submissions you make for Assignment 2.

  • Mail about Notices

Posted by John Shepherd Saturday 12 September 2015, 11:04:40 AM.

When I post a new Notice on the COMP1927 Home Page, there's a checkbox that says "Email notice to all students", so you should get a copy of the notice sent to your email. It seems that some people aren't receiving it, so I'd like to check. If you receive this notice as email, please indicate on the poll " Mail about Notices " that you received it. If you don't get this Notice via email by Monday 14 September, but happen to read it on the course Home page, indicate on the " Mail about Notices " poll that you did not receive the email.

  • Assignment 2 Glitches

Posted by John Shepherd Saturday 12 September 2015, 10:41:18 AM.

As always happens with code of any moderate size, there is the occasional glitch in the files I've provided for Assignment 2. I've set up a page to document anything you discover and the fixes you need to make.

  • Quiz 2 Deadline Extended

Posted by John Shepherd Wednesday 09 September 2015, 09:52:29 AM.

For the 100 or so people who still haven't done Quiz 2, and who might have assumed the deadline was 4pm today, I've extended the deadline until 4pm today.

  • Dracula Maps

Posted by John Shepherd Monday 07 September 2015, 11:33:43 AM.

It seems that there are some subtle differences between the various maps that we've provided for the Fury of Dracula assignment. The more artistic one seems to match the map data for the Week 07 Lab better than the easy-to-read map which was originally on the lab. I've swapped the map on the lab until we make sure that the maps and the map data is consistent. Please let me know any differences that you find between the maps and the map data (defined by all of the links added in the addConnections() function in Map.c ).

  • Assignment 2

Posted by John Shepherd Tuesday 01 September 2015, 10:17:02 PM, last modified Tuesday 01 September 2015, 10:32:33 PM.

The introductory material for Assignment 2 is now available. There's no programming required at this stage, so the pages referring to the programming part are just templates. For now, you should read the introduction and game rules and start thinking about what information your player AIs might need in order to develop a good strategy.

The assignment runs in three phases: Intro (now), View development (starting next week), Tournament play (starting after the mid-semester break).

Please read the rules carefully and ask for clarification, so we can sort out any ambiguities and inconsistencies before we start writing any code.

  • Quiz 2

Posted by John Shepherd Tuesday 01 September 2015, 12:01:14 PM.

The second quiz is now available. You can submit once only. It's open until 11pm next Tuesday (Sep 8).

  • Quiz 1

Posted by John Shepherd Sunday 23 August 2015, 12:16:23 PM, last modified Tuesday 01 September 2015, 12:01:32 PM.

A reminder that the first Quiz is now available and must be completed before the Wednesday lecture. While it's only worth 1 mark, it's useful for you to check your understanding of some things that were covered in lectures.

Update: Let me know ASAP if you think any of the answers are ambiguous/incorrect and I'll adjust the marking if I agree.

  • Polls

Posted by John Shepherd Tuesday 11 August 2015, 11:43:52 AM.

There are a couple of polls on the web site. I'd appreciate the feedback.

  • Assignment 1

Posted by John Shepherd Friday 07 August 2015, 04:30:50 PM, last modified Sunday 09 August 2015, 02:31:07 PM.

The Assignment 1 description is now out. It's due by 9am on Monday 31st August. Don't wait until 30th August to start. Start now. You can submit anytime between now and August 31.

  • COMP1927 15s2 Videos

Posted by John Shepherd Saturday 01 August 2015, 10:21:29 PM, last modified Saturday 01 August 2015, 10:22:00 PM.

In theory, videos of all lectures are available from two sources ...

    • Echo360 : the system UNSW provides for recording lectures. I have never seen Echo work properly for all students near the start of semester. There is a generic entry point to the Echo360 videos on the Lectures page.
    • YouTube : the videos I make myself during the lecture get uploaded onto YouTube and referenced along with the slides and exercises under the weekly headings on the Lectures page.

The YouTube videos have the following potential advantages over Echo360 that (a) you don't have to login to access them, (b) they've got a "talking head" (ok, maybe not an advantage), (c) they record just the lecture itself (not the irrelevant fluff at the start and end of the hour).

Another advantage of the YouTube videos is that I can fix them if there's something wrong (modulo my limited video editing capabilities). I can't do anything to fix problems with Echo360.

  • COMP1927 14s2 Videos

Posted by John Shepherd Thursday 30 July 2015, 05:30:19 PM, last modified Thursday 30 July 2015, 06:38:50 PM.

If you want to watch the videos from last year, try the link:

    http://webapps.cse.unsw.edu.au/webcms2/works/index...

The course will have a different schedule this year, so the video contents won't necessarily correspond to what we're doing now, although they might compliment it.

Posted by John Shepherd Wednesday 22 July 2015, 01:43:14 PM, last modified Saturday 25 July 2015, 03:46:33 PM.

    Welcome to COMP1927 Computing 2 !!

In this course, we aim to get you thinking like a (computer) scientist, as well as further developing your programming skills. The Big Themes in the course are: design, analysis, teamwork, and vampirism.

The Course Outline is now available. Please read it all, and ask questions in the first lecture on anything that's not clear.

This semester, we'll be trialling a new LMS (Webcms3), developed by Oliver Tan, Vanessa Ung and John Wiseheart during 15s1. Please give us feedback on what you think of the new system.

The primary entry point for the system is:
