In an emergency, contact UNSW Security (extension 56666, or phone 93856666 ). Hopefully these situations will not occur. If they do, try and remember the following:

Evacuation/Fire

  • Remain calm.
  • You should take charge.
    • Ensure you always direct specific people to do things (for instance, “Andrew, call 000; Class, leave your belongings and leave the room NOW”).
  • Count how many students have left the lab
  • Keep track of all of them, if possible
    • If you take a roll, definitely use that
  • If you have two tutors, one should lead the group, the other should go last.

Medical Emergencies

  • Remain calm.
  • If you think someone is ill, call an ambulance.
  • If you think you need one, call security - they can navigate an ambulance better than you can on the phone.
  • If it’s really serious, also call 000 yourself (or get a student to do so).
  • Get students to direct people - if you need to send them out to direct emergency personnel, do that.
  • You should take charge.
    • Ensure you always direct specific people to do things (for instance, “Andrew, call 000; Jamal and Vanessa, go to the ground floor to direct the paramedics.”)
  • Send out students to find trained people - bash down doors and make a noise. You want more people.
  • Don’t leave the student.
